Line 9 work shuts 3 stations for 4 weeks

THREE Metro stations of Line 9 will be closed from August 7 to September 3, as construction and renovation work begins for the line's extension in the southwest part of the city.

The stations, the last three stops of the line in Songjiang District, are Songjiang Xincheng, Songjiang University Town and Dongjing, the Metro operator said yesterday.

Two-hundred buses running on four free shuttle bus routes will be used to carry riders between the three stations, said city traffic authorities.

According to the new route, the line will travel from the Yanggao Road M. Staion in the Pudong New Area to Sheshan Station in Songjiang.

Shao Weizhong, vice president of the operator, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, said yesterday that "equipment renovation and construction will be conducted on the three closed stations."

The service on the stations will resume on September 4. The stops now have a total passenger volume of 4,000 to 5,000 an hour during rush hours.

The operator also reminded riders to leave extra time on the trips to work.

Nearby residents said illegal cabs and other vehicles commonly haul passengers on short trips in the area.

Officials estimated some college freshmen in the university town will also be affected on their registration days in late August and early September. A total of some 9,000 students will report for registration on August 30 and September 1.

Relief for Huashan Road traffic due next summer

TRAFFIC on a key downtown thoroughfare, Huashan Road, is expected to return to normal next June or July after more than two years of blockages for subway construction.

The road is affected as builders are working on the nearby Jiao Tong University Station on the extension of Metro Line 11 in Xuhui District.

The station is shared by lines 11 and 10.

The track work starts after the main structure is finished, according to the builders.

Nearby residents and office workers complain about the inconveniences of the construction, which has caused lanes to be blocked and bus line routes changed.

Traffic jams are frequent in the area, which often affects the nearby elevated roads and other main arteries.

Traffic patterns on Huashan Road will be restored as Metro Line 11's extension goes into the testing phase next year.

The current Line 11 runs from suburban Jiading District to downtown Jiangsu Road. It will be stretched farther to Pudong's Luoshan Road, according to Metro authorities.

Prefabricated structures to prevail in building sites

SHANGHAI constructors will use "green" building technology in 20 percent of new housing projects by 2015 to reduce noise pollution and save energy.

Local construction groups say they are still improving on the skills required to raise construction efficiency. The method of prefabricated concrete structure is used in about 35 percent of housing projects in the United States and 35 to 40 percent in many European countries.

"Traditionally, we can build one story in six days. With the new method, it costs 14 days. We are still honing skills to raise the efficiency," said Zhi Wei, a manager with Shanghai No. 2 Municipal Engineering Ltd.

His company is currently building one of the city's largest budget housing projects in Pujiang Town, Pudong District. It plans to adopt the technology of prefabricated concrete structure for half of the buildings.

Instead of using concrete mixers and other machinery at the work site, building materials are prefabricated in factory, thus reducing dust and noise by as much as 91 percent and cutting the use of scaffolds by half, Zhi said.

Major studio, amusement project launched

SHANGHAI, along with US film giant DreamWorks Animation, is to invest more than 20 billion yuan (US$3.1 billion) to build a culture and entertainment complex along the Huangpu River.

The city yesterday launched Oriental DreamWorks, a joint venture with the US film company, to build the complex titled "Dream Center" as well as create a world-class animated film studio.

The center in Shanghai's Xuhui District will include theaters, shops, restaurants, bars and hotels and will open in 2016, while the studio will co-produce "Kung Fu Panda 3," the long-anticipated third installment of the blockbuster, and plans to release the animated film in 2016.

"We have formed what we think is a very valuable strategic partnership to make world class feature animation," Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive officer of DreamWorks Animation, told a press conference in Shanghai yesterday.

DreamWorks Animation owns about 45 percent of Oriental DreamWorks, with the rest held by China Media Capital, Shanghai Media Group and Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd. The companies are seeking partners to finance investment in the Dream Center in Shanghai, said Li Ruigang, chairman of China Media Capital and CEO of Oriental DreamWorks.

The cultural and entertainment complex will feature a "Dream Walk" - a riverside corridor with flowers and trees as well as the world's largest IMAX screen, which can be used for film premieres and other events. The center will also feature art galleries and studios.

Its centerpiece Kung Fu Panda Pavilion will showcase cutting edge technologies, Li said.

"It's an incredible metropolis here with many beautiful aspects to it but it doesn't have that sort of cultural, entertainment center to it, and that's what sort of got us started on this idea," Katzenburg said.

The Dream Center will be a "celebration of great theater, great art, great culture, great music, all in one place," and will target 18- to 34-year-olds, he said.

The project will be "complementary" to the Shanghai Disneyland that is under construction, and quite different from a theme park, Katzenberg said, adding the two projects will "enhance the success of each other."

The first phase of Shanghai Disneyland in the Pudong New Area is expected to open in 2015 and attract 7.3 million visitors a year.

The Dream Center will be the flagship attraction of the West Bank Media Port of Huangpu River planned by Shanghai's Xuhui District government that is expected to see 20 million visitors a year, the district government said at the press conference.

Meanwhile, the Oriental DreamWorks studio plans to release one to three films a year following its first solely created feature production in 2017 and employ as many as 2,000 production professionals.

Li said it aims to be the largest animation production base in China and will also explore opportunities in online games, musicals and consumer products. It has seven scripts in development, one of which will be the firm's first original production, said Li. The name and content of the first work will be announced by year's end.

"We're very confident that the creative talent exists here in China. We're very enthusiastic about building a studio to promote Chinese cultures to the world," Katzenburg said.

"Kung Fu Panda 3" will be a sequel to the 2011 and 2008 films, which generated more than US$600 million each in worldwide ticket sales.

The movies, which are about a bumbling panda who becomes a martial arts hero, are hugely popular in China.

City may add streetcars

THE northern Bund area and the Hongqiao business zone might get streetcars in near future as urban planners seek ways to boost public transport capacity and efficiency.

Shanghai will build more bus-only lanes and routes for the trams in the future to help tackle the shortage of transport capacity in the face of the rapidly growing daily travel demand, according to government urban traffic experts currently working on the city's public transport development guidelines for the next five to 10 years. The planned changes include setting up tram routes in the northern area of the Bund and inside the Hongqiao business zone.

Experts believed with dedicated ground tracks, trams could run consistently at more than 20 kilometers per hour, much faster than ordinary buses that constantly run into congestion.

Streetcars would also be expanded if they prove effective, according to planners.

Noise relief near

HUNDREDS more households will get relief from noise disturbances produced by traffic on the Middle Ring Road in the next two months, city officials said yesterday. Sound-blocking screens will be installed on road sections adding up to 5.6 kilometers. They will muffle noise in 33 residential areas. The government will also add sound-reduction windows for affected households.

NYU campus building started

CONSTRUCTION of the Shanghai campus of New York University got under way yesterday.

The 64,500-square-meter campus in the Lujiazui financial zone will have a 15-floor main building with a six-floor annex, a library and a lecture hall. Total construction cost will be around 2.2 billion yuan (US$345.7 million). New York University Shanghai is a joint venture between East China Normal University and New York University. Though the new campus won't be ready until June 2014, the school will start enrolling undergraduate students next year.

Located by the new Cool Docks development on the South Bund District of Shanghai, the Waterhouse is a four-story, 19-room boutique hotel built into an existing three-story Japanese Army headquarters building from the 1930’s. The boutique hotel fronts the Huangpu River and looks across at the gleaming Pudong skyline. The architectural concept behind Neri&Hu’s renovation rests on a clear contrast of what is old and new. The original concrete building has been restored while new additions built over the existing structure were made using Cor-Ten steel, reflecting the industrial past of this working dock by the Huangpu River. Neri&Hu’s structural addition, on the fourth floor, resonates with the industrial nature of the ships which pass through the river, providing an analogous contextual link to both history and local culture.

Neri&Hu was also responsible for the design of the hotel’s interior, which is expressed through both a blurring and inversion of the interior and exterior, as well as between the public and private realms, creating a disorienting yet refreshing spatial experience for the hotel guest who longs for an unique five-star hospitality experience.

The public spaces allow one to peek into private rooms while the private spaces invite one to look out at the public arenas, such as the large vertical room window above the reception desk and the corridor windows overlooking the dining room. These visual connections of unexpected spaces not only bring an element of surprise, but also force the hotel guests to confront the local Shanghai urban condition where visual corridors and adjacencies in tight nong-tang’s define the unique spatial flavor of the city.
