Well if a city is worried about the costs of staging the olympics and has to cut corners to make balance the books and make ends meet then maybe they should reconsider bidding for the olympics. It is the biggest event on the world stage and is supposed to leave a legacy

Just because the stadium looks average doesn't mean its not going to leave a legacy. My understanding is this will transform the whole area for the better instead of there being a bunch of underused sporting venues sitting there for the next decade like in Sydney. That seems to be much better legacy than a good looking stadium imo.

Exactly. A big reason as to why London won the games is because of the legacy plan it has put in place to rejuvenate that entire part of east London. What's the legacy of a loss making stadium that's not needed for more than 4 weeks?

the london bid is meant to be a show of sustainability and a step away from extravagance. which i think is a great idea, as it will hopefully flow on with everyone else doing the same. this does not mean it can be just as exciting and brilliant, it just means there should be less waste such as stadiums that are then too large to actually be used.

The reality is no one really gives a shit about how the stadium looks from the outside, whats important is the faclities for the athletes and the spectators.

Well the MCG is nothing special visually but has a mystic that makes it one of the worlds great stadium.
On the other hand, cowboys stadium is every part exavagent, and it still gets rave reviews.

Who cares about the stadium itself. Have a look at the areas around the stadium in Stratford. I don't know what they looked like before but it is an incredibly modem district now! It'll be a standing legacy for London!

Looked like an abandoned industrial wasteland only a few years ago!

The London stadium is not going to be dismantled post-Olympics. It will probably be used as a football stadium at a reduced size. The 2008 Bird's Nest on the other hand has really found no purpose post-Olympics.
This was the site in March 2009, just before the heavy construction and security began to kick in. Basically old, abandoned industrial land.

Either way, its a large structure with a high roof clearance. It could be used (well) by almost any city either as an indoor training facility, stadium, convention space etc. It's a really great design. |

Some stadium area plans are floating around including a birds eye view of the whole precinct including pedestrian bridge. On phone so can't repost.

Buses stop at bridge, then people walk.
