Liverpool in World Chambers Congress 2015 bid

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce is bidding to host the World Chambers Congress in 2015.

The Congress, organised by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the ICC’s World Chambers Federation, (WCF) is the only international forum for chamber leaders and executives worldwide to share best-practice experience, develop networks and learn about new areas of innovation from other chambers as they face the challenge of remaining relevant to companies in their region.

It is estimated that the event could attract up to 2,000 delegates to Liverpool and generate more than £3m to the local economy in addition to the prestige and prominence the city would receive from hosting the Congress. It would be hosted at ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, who are supporting the bid.

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce is encouraging letters of support from local businesses and stakeholders. It also recently launched a social media campaign with a dedicated Facebook page and the Twitter hashtag #WorldChambersinLiverpool2015.

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce bid leader, Jenny Stewart, said: "We believe that a WCF member delegate attending a World Chambers Congress in Liverpool will gain a unique experience from the journey that the city has travelled."

“We will share our experience to date and our vision for the future. Liverpool’s heritage and culture will provide a magnificent backdrop for the networking and interactions of the international professional community.

“Those attending will not only gain lasting experiences but also many practical ideas and learning from the Congress that will benefit delegates attending and their wider group of peers through knowledge share and putting into practice some of the ideas learned at a Liverpool Congress."

This would be the first time the UK has hosted a WCF Congress and both the Chamber and ACC Liverpool are looking forward to the prospect of hosting it in 2015, when Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and British Chambers, as well as city partners, can welcome a global audience to an exciting and innovative ninth WCC in Liverpool.

Kerrin MacPhie, director of sales at ACC Liverpool, said: "This event brings together business leaders from across the world and would allow companies in the city to flourish though networking, learning and sharing new ideas.

"The city has one of the oldest Chambers of Commerce in the UK and this prestige, coupled with the modernity and experience of ACC Liverpool in hosting large-scale conferences, puts us in a strong position to bid for the World Chambers Congress.

"We are asking businesses across the city to pledge their support for the Chamber as part of the bid. It would build on the success of events such as the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, held earlier this year, and would leave a lasting legacy in the city."

Liverpool will bid for the Congress through a two-stage process, via a presentation to the World Chamber Federation on 14 September and the submission of a bid book on 1 October. The host city will be announced by the WCF Executive Committee on 26 November.

UK BABY AND TODDLER SHOW LAUNCHES IN LIVERPOOL

The UK Baby and Toddler Show will launch its first full-scale consumer edition in Liverpool next February.

The event, organised by UK Fashion Events, will launch a consumer show at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool from 2 to 3 February 2013. More than 200 national and international exhibitors and 16,000 visitors are expected to attend.

The focus will be on all aspects of parenting for children aged up to four years old.

“This is the first time a show of this scale has been held in the North West; it has been composed to support parents every step of the way at such a wonderful but challenging time,” marketing and events manager Laura Davies said.

“Having a baby is a life-changing experience and we hope visitors will enjoy the show, which is being held for the first time in Liverpool.”

The Liverpool edition will feature a live seminar programme, and is being support by large and boutique brands ranging from the Liverpool Women’s Hospital to Mothercare, Smyths Toys and Birth to Potty.

UK Fashion Events also runs one-day shows in Leeds, Sheffield, Brighton, Cardiff, Bristol, Glasgow, Cheltenham, Bath, Wolverhampton, Chester and Nottingham.

BT Convention Centre owner, ACC Liverpool, has gone to tender for a new £40m exhibition centre, which is expected to be completed in late 2014 and provide 8,100sqm of additional event space in the city. A contractor was due to be announced in September.

Liverpool Brings the Fab Four to IMEX America

Liverpool Convention Bureau will be taking Beatle-mania to IMEX America this year as part of an initiative to drive larger conferences from the USA to Liverpool.

The bureau will be exhibiting at the show for the first time, accompanied by destination partner ACC Liverpool, who previously attended in 2011. Both organisations will be exhibiting on the VisitEngland stand.

2012 is a significant year for Beatles fans as it marks 50 years since the ‘Fab Four’ played together for the first time, and the opening day of IMEX America coincides with John Lennon’s birthday. To celebrate, Team Liverpool are hosting a Beatles themed party on the stand with music, hospitality and some special gifts along with advice on how to incorporate The Beatles into events and conferences.

There is also a ‘Ticket to Ride’ competition for visitors to the stand, who can enter to win an all expenses paid familiarisation trip to Liverpool including transport and accommodation.

With the USA a key market for the city, both the Liverpool Convention Bureau and ACC Liverpool will be targeting large conferences and events from American buyers, particularly in light of Exhibition Centre Liverpool, due to open for business at ACC Liverpool in 2015.

Kate Currie, Convention Bureau Manager comments: “America is a developing market for Liverpool and this exhibition provides the perfect opportunity to illustrate the city’s range of world class venues, its heritage, dedicated and friendly service and standing as one of the UK’s best conference destinations. We look forward to taking one of our most famous exports, The Beatles, to the exhibition and highlighting all that’s best about our destination”.

Kerrin MacPhie, Director of Sales at ACC Liverpool, said: “IMEX America gives us an ideal platform to talk to thousands of hosted buyers about latest developments at ACC Liverpool, including Exhibition Centre Liverpool which will take our total interlinked and flexible event space from 7,125m2 to 15,225m2. We will be looking to forge relationships with new contacts in the exhibition market and develop them over time as we enter our next exciting phase.

“Standing on Liverpool’s world-renowned waterfront, our international connectivity thanks to two airports in the region and our connections to London and beyond are all key factors that will be of interest to the IMEX audience”.

Liverpool Convention Bureau and ACC Liverpool will be exhibiting at IMEX America, 9-11 October on stand 814.

Liverpool prepares for BCSC 2012

Around 2,500 of retail property's biggest hitters will arrive in Liverpool on Monday for the annual British Council of Shopping Centres Conference & Exhibition.

BCSC 2012 takes place from Monday to Wednesday at ACC Liverpool. There will also be fringe events, drinks receptions, site tours and golf contests around the city.

The UK's leading developers, investors, shopping centre owners, managers and retailers as well as government figures will attend the three-day event.

Delegates include Grosvenor, Hammerson and Capital & Regional as well as a host of top high street names including Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Arcadia Group.

Retailer advisor Mary Portas is a keynote speaker at the conference, and her hour-long session on Tuesday afternoon is expected to spark debate. Challenging economic conditions have been met with a strong response from the industry and a comprehensive conference program ensures the industry will continue to tackle these challenges head on.

A series of recent key government debates around, amongst other things, business and empty rates mean the spotlight has never been so firmly on the retail property industry as is meets in Liverpool next week.

Michael Green, BCSC chief executive, said: "To have such a wealth of experience and knowledge from such a diverse industry all in one place always sparks great debate; this year's keynote speakers, Mary Portas and Luke Johnson will not disappoint.

"The changes Liverpool has undergone over the last decade make it an excellent location to host the event. With such a proud history and vibrant local economy, we are excited to be in Liverpool for the next three days which will hopefully see successful networking and deal making."

Premier League Darts returns to the Liverpool ECHO Arena

LIVERPOOL will host top arrows stars when the Premier League Darts championship returns to the ECHO Arena.

The world’s leading eight players – led by reigning McCoy’s Premier League Darts champion Phil Taylor and current World Champion Adrian Lewis – will compete in the tournament next year.

The 14-week league season, which sees players face each other twice, will begin on February 7 in Belfast, with the 13th league night taking place at the ECHO Arena on May 3.

Tickets go on sale next month for the night which will be crucial in the battle for places in the play-offs a fortnight later in London, with Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor defending the title he won this year by defeating Simon Whitlock in the final.

That game was a repeat of their clash in Liverpool this April, in which a packed ECHO Arena watched Taylor win 8-3.

There were also rare draws, with James Wade and Kevin Painter, Andy Hamilton and Raymond van Barneveld, and Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson all sharing the spoils.

PDC chairman Barry Hearn said: “The McCoy’s Premier League Darts was the best-ever in 2012 and we’re already looking forward with excitement to next year’s tournament.

“Not only did we celebrate two nine-dart finishes during the course of the event, but the players who achieved that feat, Phil Taylor and Simon Whitlock, went on to contest a brilliant final in London.
