Shapoorji Pallonji Group was allotted a 50 acre plot in Rajarhat to develop an IT SEZ. SPG did not develop it because of the recession and had applied for denotification. Infosys had contacted SPG at this stage, and might work with them as co-developers. In return, SPG can take the 50 acres Infosys has been given. Legal experts claim that all of this can be solved at the state level. There's no need to go to Delhi.

I hope this gets done soon enough.
excellent news...finger crossed!!!

But the bigger question is, is Infosys in a position currently to expand it's business? I heard there has been no increments this year and also many if not most employees are kind of disillusioned, and are seeking for a change..
I am not entirely sure about this one;but I had read an article recently about this.

Is it the same 50 acre plot where 'SP Infocity' was supposed to come up but was held back for recession.
What it means ultimately is that Infosys & SP will jointly develop an upcoming IT Park on that 50 acres. Am I right?

What it might mean is SP will develop the property and Infosys will become the anchor customer (as in they will book the maximum space). If this gets the green light from Writers it will be a positive news after a long time.

Yeah, why not?? From what I understand, Infy could save a good amount of money too. Precommitted IT parks are present in Bangalore. Right now, losing an investment like Infy would look very bad on the state's IT front.

[P.S: Infosys' standalone buildings are sexy!! Kolkata could be losing an architectural delight here. Still "nei mamar chey kana mama bhalo"]

Grand plans for culture complex

KOLKATA: With chief minister Mamata Banerjee's dream project Dhono Dhanyo cultural complex coming up near Presidency jail, driving down DL Khan Road and Bhavani Bhavan or zipping down Judges Court Road may not be that smooth as motorists enjoy now. A new bungalow for the state chief secretary will also come up in the area.

The CM has repeatedly mentioned that the city should have a good convention centre, as most conferences are now held in the Science City auditorium. Now the state is considering if the cultural complex project can be executed on a public-private-partnership basis, as the exchequer lacks fund. The state can provide the 3.5 acres for the complex.

While celebrating DL Ray's 150th birth anniversary last month, the CM had announced setting up the Dhono Dhanyo cultural complex which will have a convention centre and an amphitheatre. For accommodating the cars coming to this complex, there will be underground car park on Reformatory Street near the Calcutta University's Alipore campus. It will house around 300 cars and zoo visitors will also be allowed to use the car park. There are also plans to rename Reformatory Street as DL Ray Road.

The PWD has surveyed the land for the proposed convention centre which on completion can house at least 2,000 people. So, it can be used for seminars and musical performances. The convention centre is expected to be in sync with the Science City auditorium. Plans are on so that it can accommodate around 100 performers on stage with a big greenroom. Architects plan to set up a mini auditorium and four seminar rooms to accommodate 40 to 100 people.

The convention centre is likely to come up near the South 24-Parganas DM's bungalow. Some jail quarters are located on the land chosen for the purpose, which have been illegally occupied and shanties have come up. A major part of the land is now occupied by residents of Surjya Sen Colony who got the patta a couple of years ago. So, the state government is now planning to evict the occupants and use the land for the convention centre. These occupants will be provided with alternative accommodation.

An official said the amphitheatre will have a capacity of around 5,000 people depending on the land that will be available. There are plans to set up museums at the base of the amphitheatre. The plot next to Tolly's nullah, on which now stands an old dilapidated building, will be redesigned. Officials are trying to find out if some extra land can be carved out from the area meant for the women's special jail and the unused jail quarters can make space for the new cultural complex.

The government also plans to build a bungalow for the state chief secretary in the area. Previously, the state's chief secretary had his residence at Ballygunge. Since now it is being used as the official residence of the Chief Justice of the high court, a new house is required to accommodate the chief secretary.

Traffic policemen fear that once the cultural complex comes up - which is slated to be completed by 2014 - the increased footfall in the area will trigger major traffic snarls.

Is there really a need for a cultural complex/convention center in Alipore?

Why not use the land to create a citizen's park instead?

There are enough cultural centers in the city. The New Town convention center is the one that the govt needs to concentrate on.

Culture is the only industry that is flourishing in Bengal lately.

It is being built by Simplex Projects Ltd, the realty arm of Simplex Infrastructure. Info about this project was taken from NK Realtors website.
