Former Istana Negara opens its doors
By SHEILA SRI PRIYA | 25 January 2013| last updated at 09:54PM
http://www.nst.com.my/streets/johor/...doors-1.207128

ROYAL ABODE: The public can now visit the various rooms at the former palace, which were once highly restricted areas

KUALA LUMPUR: EVER wondered how the interior of the former Istana Negara's royal dining room or bedroom looked like?

Wonder no more, because starting Feb 1, the public will be able to step into some parts of the once highly restricted area of the former palace.

Department of Museums Malaysia director-general Datuk Ibrahim Ismail said Istana Negara is one of the most visited places by foreign and local tourists in the country.

"Most visitors have asked to visit the 'interior' of the palace, so starting Feb 1, we will open its doors for the public," said Ibrahim.

He said visitors can either take a guided tour or visit some of the many rooms in the palace at their leisure.

He added there will also be activities for the public at the palace grounds such as silat and brass band performances by the police and army.

"The guides are former long-serving palace staff and those who have retired," said Ibrahim.

Reporters were taken on a guided tour of the palace recently by royal guard Rusli Asri, who worked at the palace for 32 years.

During the tour, Rusli said despite his long service, he had never stepped into the bedrooms of the king and queen before the tour.

Rusli said he joined the palace as a staff member when he was 19 and was appointed because the Pahang royalty only wanted the son of a policeman to serve them.

Rusli's father was a former transport police at the palace.

"My most memorable moment at the palace was when I was engaged to serve the King," said Rusli, who was born in Limbongan, Malacca.

Rusli has served eight kings and has enjoyed working with all of them.

However, said Rusli, to keep a low profile, he told friends that he was a gardener at Istana Negara.

Asked about his experience working with so many kings, Rusli said he respected them like a father.

"I treated the kings like a father because it made it easier to work with them. However, fathers do reprimand their sons and as such, I did not mind being reprimanded," said Rusli.

He hoped this opportunity to visit the palace will provide the younger generation with a better understanding and appreciation of their former kings.

Among the rooms open to the public are a small audience hall, the minister's room, the ambassador's room, dining room, royal clinic, small throne room, Yang di- Pertuan Agong's office, Raja Permaisuri Agong's office and the reading room.

Visitors will also have the chance to visit the five royal bedrooms complemented by mini kitchens, personal dining rooms, laundry room and reading room.

Visitors will also have a peek into the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's wardrobe, changing room, prayer room, shoe storage, restroom as well as the Raja Permaisuri Agong's powder room, shoe storage, wardrobe, changing room, prayer room and restroom.

The entrance fee to the palace has yet to be decided.

Since April 15, last year, the "Pameran Raja Kita" at Balairong Seri of the former Istana Negara has been open to the public free of charge. The exhibition is ongoing.
