River Benue to Be Dredged This Year

Nigeria: River Benue to Be Dredged This Year - Minister
Shehu Abubakar

Quote:

15 September 2011

River Benue will be dredged just like River Niger as part of Federal Government's policy to ensure full navigation through the nation's inland waterways, Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, has said.

The minister, in a press briefing as part of the achievements of the present administration within its first 100 days in office, said the Niger River has been fully dredged and put to commercial use while the Benue River will be dredged from Lokoja to Makurdi this year.

The briefing was anchored by Information Minister Mr. Labaran Maku, who said it was necessary to educate the public on the direction government is going.

Senator Idris said when the Yar'adua/Jonathan adminis-tration took over, the transport sector was in shambles and ineffective. He said due to the crucial nature of transport to the economic life of any modern nation, "The transport ministry has in the recent past, conceived a number of projects within the 3 critical sectors of rail, inland waterways and maritime to drive the economic transformation of the present administration.

"Specifically, railway modernization project phase 1 which covers a total distance of 2,730km has commenced and progressing steadily.

"The Ajaokuta to Warri rail line was conceived to facilitate conveyance of raw materials like iron ore, cocking coal and dolomite from mines at Itakpe to the steel plants at Ajaokuta and Warri and transport finished products to the ports as well as other parts of the country."

He said the federal government has rehabilitated the old railway narrow gauge covering 488km from Lagos to Jebba, adding that Jebba to Kano lane is expected to be completed and put to use by November this year.

Baro is a planned rail terminal which will be linked to abuja, minna and the lagos-kano rail line.

Dennis/Naijaborn there's nothing wrong with the dredging at all. It's actually one of the best things you can do for development in the hinterland, and the best thing for development in the country.

dredging means they're basically make the river deeper so that boats large passenger and cargo boats can travel on them making those parts of the river that will have ports trading hubs and transport spots.

a cities growth is based on access to routes of trade and for too long the Niger River has been left dormant when it could be one of the world's more reliable super highways if utilized correctly. I think this will do wonders for the development of the country because it will cause cities to boom and trade to expand.

+1 This is a good thing, it will spread wealth from the coast to the interior.

Not supporting it, but weren't things being blown up in the South (Niger Delta) just a short while back?
