Biertan / Birthälm / Berethalom  Crypt of the bishops in the Unesco WHS fortified church, the most famous of its kind. In 1397 Birthälm was already mentioned as a town. Between 1572 - 1867 here was the seat of Saxon Episcopal See. The monumental cathedral in Late Gothic was built between 1490 - 1520 and the magnificent altar was painted between 1483 - 1513. The main door (1515) with a complex locking system was presented the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. The church is surrounded by three rings of walls and six towers. Dragomirna Monastery Built between 1609 (the church) and 1627 (the fortifications). The chapel outside the walls was built first, in 1602. Inside the precinct is the vaulted refectory, built in the Gothic style. It now holds the Dragomirna museum which contains precious works of Romanian medieval civilization. At Dragomirna, the metropolitan Anastasie Crimca (the founder) started a school for miniaturists and calligraphers, which became "a last blossoming and glittering of the Romanian art of miniature". The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit is unique in all of Romania for its unusual proportions. It is a much-elongated rectangle, without side apses. The tower of the church, very tall and slender, decorated throughout, emphasizes the vertical. The total height is 42 meters. The sculpted ornamental motifs decorating the tower are uncommon for the epoch.
