Nice and comprehensive gallery on the construction of 7 km long section of R48 in the northeast of the Czech Republic. RSD flyer. Half of the construction features rebuilding of the old I/48 and the other half is in new allignment. The whole section replaces the old I/48 in 7 kms and is 2x2.
The road could be opened for traffic in december 2012 already. gallery at www.ceskedalnice.cz courtesy: Lumír Kuchař and Martin z Ostravy http://gallery.ceskedalnice.cz/index...-mistek?page=2 I-48 Direction Frydek Místek, beggining of the construction. Some of the beton layer is already being laid these days. There'll be small 160 meters long cut and cover tunnel in village Lysůvky to carry local road and connect the village as well as anti noise measure. There are some discussions in the czech government about recategorizing the motorway, expressway and first class road network, this conditioned by changes in the standards that constitute the different clasification. As I understand it some of the expressways would get the label motorways and some of the first class roads would get label "only for motor vehicles", plus 110 km/h speed limit.
However, there could be also some regressions compared to recent status of some expressways but this is not completaly clear to me. This whole is just a discussion anyway and might become reality several years from now. |

I drove on the D1 from Prague to Brno several days ago and was surprised by the poor condition of some sections. Now I have a better understanding of the needs driving the project to renovate the D1 with an extra 0.75 meter of width for each carriageway. It makes sense to renovate the road bed and increase the width at the same time.

Does anyone of you know something about the speedlimit 160km/h on motor- and expressways at CZ?
At the internet I found a map which motor- and expressways should become 160km/h. The map is maybe from 2008/2009. http://www.ceskedalnice.cz/prilohy/md-160.pdf

Fine, but A2 has two lanes, whereas from what I've understood, here the 110 km/h limit will include also one lane roads, as it is for example in Hungary. If so, it will be just a little bit too fast for me.

I didn't realize that at-grade single-lane carriageways would be included among the roads to get the 110kph speed limit. In Estonia, there are 1x2 roads, not controlled access, with at-grade intersections limited to 100kph during summer months and there used to be in Lithuania also. Are these roads in CZ 1x2 or 2x1?

![]() ![]() Second possibility is that some R roads that are grade separated would become first class roads. But this is not clear to me and indeed it would mean in fact reduction of the speed limit from 130 km/h. Quote:
AFAIK this is not considered anymore by any authority. Indeed an old proposal. Last edited by Surel; August 13th, 2012 at 09:19 PM. |

Anyway, if such groundbreaking proposal to change the network speed limits and categorisation would come through I think it would be only allowing increasing localy speed to 110 km/h on certain sections in the frist class road network, not making it default for the whole first class road network. The designation change for some R (expressway) roads into D (motorways) roads has high change to succed and is quite understandable. It will unquestionably mean broadening of the motorway standards definitions. |

What would make sense to me:
1) Broadening the motorway standards (D) and redesigninig the expressways (R) in such a way, that: a) Many of the now named R (expressway) roads would fall under the D (motorway) category. Speed limit 130 km/h b) Not yet build R roads would be in majority built as falling under the D (motorway) category. 130 km/h c) No change of R (expressway) roads into the I (first class) roads category. The current expressways which design is substandard to allow reclasification into a motorway category, would be kept in expressway category and would have localy reduced speed limits. 2) The I (first class) roads that are of high standard 2x2 or (as a must) with grade separated intersections at least, and of allowing alignment, could get localy increased speed limit up to 110 km/h and "only motor vehicle" road status. The I (first class) roads sections with grade intersections could not get 110 km/h limit. And the I (first class) roads that would get "only motor vehicle" status, should allow other traffic on some side road in the same destinations. This would result in existing three categories D (motorways) R (expressways) and I (first class) when the new construction would be done only in the D and I category with prefferably all R roads to be built only being built as D roads. |

Great news, I hope R46 gets the same treatment on worst parts!
