Question: what's the difference between Australia and New Zealand at the Olympic Games?
Australia: 134 Gold medals
New Zealand: 39 Gold medals

Is swimming really the most popular sport in Australia? NBC here in the US has said on a few occasions during the Olympic telecast that it was.

It's the most popular, telecast Olympic sport because, notionally, it's the sport we should do best in. There will be similarly large tracts of time devoted to rowing and cycling.

The most popular telecast sports in Australia are Australian Rules football, Rugby League and Cricket. So...

Depends how you measure it... Australia didn't win a single gold medal at Montreal 1976 (we won 1 silver and 4 bronze)... so far our only 2012 gold medal is from the swimming.

Lets see....
OZ = 22.5 mullion people ; NZ = 4.5 million people, ie: ratio of 5:1.
Therefore 39 NZ Gold Medals x 5 = 195 Gold medals, versus OZ Gold Medals = 134.
Still ahead

Per capita means nothing, as population increases it can alter the set fact (the actual results). The facts speak for themselves. You could argue that Australia's overall ranking is pretty impressive for a nation of only 22.5 million.

Again, more lies!

Finland. Population 5 million. 101 gold medals.

Bahamas. Population 400,000. 4 gold medals.

Dear Alphaville you are wrong yet again NZ is the greatest sports country in the world per capita...

Olympic games record (both summer and winter)

The world's most famous national sports team (the famed All Blacks)

Soccer (the only unbeaten side at the 2010 world cup)

America's Cup (won it twice)

other sports NZ does well in Cricket, Rugby League, Softball, etc

Not very smart, are you?

Finland. Population 5 million. 101 gold medals.

Bahamas. Population 400,000. 4 gold medals.

Because the one silver medal you have won in the entire history of the Winter Olympics makes such a huge difference? Meanwhile Australia has been coming home with small swagger of gold medals at recent Winter Olympics.

Quote:

It's a rugby team... nowhere near as well known as major national Football teams. Besides how do you define "most famous" - you can't.

Quote:
Soccer (the only unbeaten side at the 2010 world cup)
If NZ was the only "unbeaten" side at 2010, it would have won the World Cup. NZ only got into the 2010 World Cup because Australia is now in the Asian confederation, so it had to contend with Tonga and Fiji. Meanwhile Australia qualifies against the likes of Football superpowers Japan, South Korea and others in the Asian Confedeation.

Quote:
America's Cup (won it twice)
We did it in 1983 and hardly anybody here gives a shit. The America's Cup was amazing for Auckland, but meanwhile Sydney was hosting the 2000 Olympic Games.

Quote:

Yes, does well in. So do other nations. So where were we? Oh right your claim that NZ is the great sports nation on earth.

The question is :
Who gets the gold for being the most childish and/or insecure forum member at SSC, Alphaville or Snorky33 ?

It's a tough one but may the "best" one win
