Hardest year ever to choose - may as well make it a collective.

Wiggins. He had been outstanding all year before the olympics. Before the TDF even.

Fixed.

Seriously, I'm surprised bookies are still taking bets.

Sports Personality of the Year - 2012

I think it is an EASY choice.

Andy Murray for me!

Farah, Wiggins or Ennis would be good choices too (what a GREAT year this is!) but with the Olympics AND Wimbledon itself, Murray is the outstanding British candidate.

In my opinion!

Wiggins is the only one who actually has a personality. Not that that's ever mattered in the past...

So you'd chose a guy who failed to win the biggest event in his sport over one who did?

I think that winning an Olympic Gold in the Mens Singles (the first British man to do that in 100 years) having also got to the Final of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament a few weeks back (the first British man to achieve that for 60 odd years) makes him a pretty strong candidate!

I really want to put a bet on Wiggins, but Murray would then no doubt go and win the US Open and throw a spanner in the works.

Can't someone create a new thread with a new poll?

And make sure Beth Tweddle-the-Medal is in it!

Sure, Ennis is the darling poster girl of the games, with a trim body, nice ass and a pretty face to go with her 2012 Olympic Gold medal, but Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France; no Brit had ever done that, he also won a 2012 Olympics Gold medal and showed a bit of personality in his interviews, he's the perfect winner for SPotY!!

As ZedFerret pointed out, Wiggins has been awesome this year, he has won the Dauphine for the 2nd year running, the Paris-Nice and Tour de Romandie to go with the Tour de France win and Olympic gold medal. You could argue that on his Olympic medal count alone he would be a worthy recipient; the only other British sportsmen with more than 6 Olympic medals have both won this award and both have also been knighted.

Whilst it can be difficult to compare achievements across sports, with all due respect to Murray / Hoy / Ennis / Ainslie, or whoever else happens to be BBC Flavour of the Month, Wiggins is on another planet this year.

So the nominees are in for this years SPOTY:

Nicola Adams, boxing
Ben Ainslie, sailing
Jessica Ennis, athletics
Mo Farah, athletics
Katherine Grainger, rowing
Sir Chris Hoy, cycling
Rory McIIroy, golf
Andy Murray, tennis
Ellie Simmonds, swimming
Sarah Storey, cycling
David Weir, athletics
Bradley Wiggins, cycling

Any thoughts? Fairly predictable? Nicola Adams and Katherine Grainger included for balance but no Laura Trott?

I'm finding great amusement in the comments on the following BBC article. I think the general approach to SPOTY is to be incredibly offended, then pick the name of a random sportsperson and complain at their inclusion or non-inclusion. Bonus points seem to be awarded for anyone who thinks a horse should be able to win the award, and boy are there a lot of them.

Really don't know how you can pick any of the Team GB athletes to be the winner, they're all worthy winners.

I suppose it sways for Wiggo as he has had the most amazing year. I'd love to see Jess Ennis win though, or David Weir - he was absolutely amazing to watch during the paralympics.

Wiggo is 2/5 favourite at the bookies and they're rarely wrong.

IMHO Bradley Wiggins should win (even Froome's wife agree) but Mo Farah will.
