+1,

It is a heavy vehicle dealing thing and not a Mercedes Benz selling outlet (happy that some commercial activity is going to happen in the outskirts). Already a big Chevrolet service place is there a few kms away.

Is it really a benz show room?
Friends any idea?
Thanks for the pic. Nice to see Bharath Benz Showroom in Madurai. Area is next to the under construction Samayanallur ROB right?

it is not benz car show room. It is actually commercial vehicle division of Daimler AG which owns Mercedes Benz brand. This is from Daimler India Commercial Vehicles and it has a huge plant in Chennai-Oragadam. They sell commercial vehicles in the name Bharat Benz Brand.

More information about Bharat Benz can be found here.

Bring Metro Rail project to Madurai

the a legislative amendment recently passed by Parliament enabled extension of Metro Rail to any city with a population of over 10 lakh, provided the State Government shares 50 per cent of the project cost.

“A Metro Rail project is now being implemented at Chennai but Madurai, the second largest city in Tamil Nadu, continued to suffer from severe traffic congestion

REASONS FOR COLLECTOR SAGAYAM TRANSFER

Madurai: Officials from the Madurai district administration in Tamil Nadu are conducting raids at 175 granite quarries across the district. The former Collector of Madurai Mr Sagayam, who was recently transferred, had alleged major violations by many granite quarries and had estimated a loss of more than sixteen thousand crore rupees to the state exchequer.

The present Collector Mr Anshul Mishra told NDTV that eighteen teams are conducting raids today and the teams would submit reports in ten days. "Officials have been instructed to measure the quantity of granite mined and identify violations," he said. He added tough action will be taken against all those who had violated.

The former Collector had named three quarries in his report which he had inspected and alleged that huge quantities of granite were mined figures with the connivance of officials from Revenue and TAMIN Ltd [Tamil Nadu Minerals Ltd]. He added some of them have encroached water bodies, which in turn has affected agriculture and grazing areas for cattle.
Most of these granite quarries are on hillocks and government-owned 'poromboke' land and most of these are owned by the Tamil Nadu Minerals Department which leases them to private parties who would have to pay for the granite they mine.

"A company that pays the government eighty lakhs literally transports eighty crore worth of granite totally unaccounted for or much more than what they have been permitted to mine," a senior official told NDTV.

PMK Chief Dr Ramadoss has already called for a CBI probe adding that the information provided by the Collector suggests irregularities in mining. "This scam could be much bigger than the iron ore scam involving the Reddy brothers which created a political storm in Andhra and Karnataka," he said.

"Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had made this an election issue last year and though her Industries Minister had promised to take action against those who violated, nothing happened after that," he added.

Spicejet is likely to commence operations to Colombo from September from Madurai. It seems a few minor approvals from customs are required . Staded by the CEO of spicejet while declaring quarterly results.

That's good news !! Super-speciality Institute for Obstetric Care at Madurai - First of its kind in Southern TN, much needed one too..

Madurai leads the Medical Tourism front with Many Super-speciality cares from both Govt. & Private !!

What about the Institute for Pediatrics and Women, that was proposed recently at Madurai ?

AIIMS type hospital is finally coming up at Medical college grounds only..JJ should not be that adomant to create this hospital at a congested place only because Thoppur was selected by DMK MC..

Gilli, If JJ wants to shift the location of AIIMS type hospital because thoppur was selected by DMK govt, then why dont we write to CM and ask CM to relocate the hospital into a bigger place somewhere in Dindigul Road or University road or Melur road? Medical college ground is not sufficient for future expansion and it will end up as another rajaji hospital extension complex. we need a big land so that future expansion is not an issue. Also we need some breathing space inside the city. As it is hardly any open space available in the city and we shouldnt allow available space to be filled with steel and cement.

can we write a letter to JJ requesting to relocate the proposed AIIMS type hospital to outside the city area?

I sent this already (more than 15 days back) to our collector, he told (at that time) that he will look into this issue. I hope he intervenes and does the needful for us.

But the tenders had come out and alloted too. Architectural design had been finalised. So, It's almost in the stage of Kick-start for its Construction activities. Will it work out if we try so ananth & MK ?

If they want to favour us seriously, they can do it at any stage bcs even the Project planned by DMK at Thoppur was also awarded the tender and It was taken by a Trivandrum firm Hindustan Healthcare Ltd., and the construction activities were about to start.

JJ is changing things for the project which got finished and functioning. (New Secretriat and Library complex at Chennai)..She can do it if she wants to favour Madurai developments..But Ego..??

Contract awarded etc are not material at all. JJ can revert the whole plan if she wants to. Secretriat complex, anna libaray, anna university etc are few live examples. So we need to send an urgent letter to collector and to JJ from our forum requesting to relocate the project to any NH or even into ring road. We will try and see the outcome.

I think we should leave it as it is.Already we suffered 20 years because of non availability of land.If we start thinking of shifting they may shift to another city also.Something is better than nothing.

For the last 7 years the project location remains madurai and many times union health ministry has mentioned in parliament. So chances of now moving it into another place is considerably less. This is the risk we may have to take considering the space available at madurai medical college. As I mentioned before, if it comes up at MMC it will be another rajaji hospital extension only. If we have it outside city even in Ring Road, we can have really a big campus which will take care of all future expansion requirements.

Madurai-Go Green!

Quote:
A movement to recapture a GREEN past

Madurai Green was started in October 1991 by a group interested in preserving environment

The ‘Kadambavanam’ (forest of Kadamba trees) of yore has only green patches on its body today. Most of the trees have been replaced by concrete structures. The city’s 38 tanks have either been filled up by buildings and solid waste or left in disuse as collectors of used water. The successive monsoons playing truant is not the only reason for Madurai getting below average rainfall. The city and suburbs do not have enough green to cover themselves. Still, sustained efforts are on to recapture the green past by raising trees wherever possible and creating awareness of green values.

An aerial view of the city will show only a few areas like the American College and Railway Colony green. A movement to plant tree saplings and concurrently make people aware of the value of greenery is gaining momentum. Started in October 1991 by a group of people interested in preserving Madurai’s environment, Madurai Green is taking roots as a movement for clean environment. The target then was to raise 40, 000 saplings every year for distribution all over the city. So far, Madurai Green has given away 6.5 lakh saplings for free or for Re one per sapling. “Till 1998, we were distributing saplings free of cost. After we realised that people did not show any seriousness to protect the free sapling, we started to offer it for Re one. Now we give saplings for Rs three for educational institutions and Rs five for individuals. However, free distribution also continues,” says N. Chidambaram, Project Coordinator.

Madurai Green offers eight varieties of tree saplings for the public, including Neem, Pungan, Flame of the Forest and Vaagai. Saplings are raised at Gomathipuram and wherever space is offered. The National Service Scheme volunteers of Tamil Nadu Polytechnic College have been involved in raising about 60, 000 saplings. Usually, growing of saplings begins in April-May. This year it is delayed up to August due to absence of rainfall. Grown up saplings are distributed during the rainy season. On June 5, World Environment Day, the Madurai Green supplies about 10, 000 free saplings to people at the railway station, bus stands and markets every year. Efforts are on to involve Youth Clubs in growing tress. Already, Youth Clubs have been formed in Tahsildar Nagar and Koodal Nagar and youngsters are trained to raise 10,000 saplings each in these places.

D. Raghavan, president, Madurai Green, who started the movement along with Mr. Chidambaram, Rev. Fr. Alexis Diamond Raj and M. B. Vasimalai of Dhan Foundation, says that theirs is a self-sustaining social organisation founded for the purpose of making Madurai a green city and it does not depend on government support. Its prime objective is to provide green cover in new residential colonies. Gomathipuram-Thendral Nagar on the Sivaganga Road is a standing example of public participation in growing trees. Its streets, especially the Alli Street and Cross Streets, have high grown trees that provide shade. Madurai Green plans to develop the park near Viraganoor regulator as a model for the city. It will also draft the services of individuals to encourage greening of specific areas.

Taking stock of the green spread over a period of two decades, Mr. Chidambaram says that a survey taken by them three years back revealed that the survival rate of saplings was 50 to 60 per cent in industrial estates and private factories; 35 to 40 per cent in educational institutions; 35 per cent in private sector offices and 20 to 25 per cent in residential areas. The Forest Policy stipulates that 50 per cent of survival can be deemed cent per cent.

Tree Walk

More than spreading green cover, Madurai Green has succeeded in creating awareness of trees. One of its initiatives is the ‘Tree Walk’ organised on the fourth Sunday of every month from June this year. The first Tree Walk was held in Alagarkoil herbal forest, one of the 11 herbal forests in Tamil Nadu. The second walk took place in Pasumalai around The Gateway. The walk, says D. Stephen, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, American College, will prevent reckless felling of trees due to absence of concern. The participants are told about the significance of individual tress species and the benefits the society gets from it. The walk actually introduces trees to people, says Dr. Stephen.

Madurai Green involves women in growing saplings after providing necessary training. A woman can take up rearing saplings as a part-time vocation at home.

With limited space, it is possible to raise 500 to 1000 saplings, says Mr. Chidambaram. Apart from spending their spare time usefully, women can earn Rs five per sapling.

Last year, Madurai Green joined hands with Madurai chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage to raise Kadamba trees. It also sends experts to residential areas to assess their potential before offering saplings and undertakes to foster trees in private spaces for a fee.

More green cover can be provided for the city if roads are dug up only on one side to lay cables, feels Mr. Chidambaram. The other side should be earmarked for trees. Concrete roads should not be laid from end to end and at least two-foot space should be provided on the margins for trees. The initiatives of Madurai Green have resulted in educational institutions wearing a green coat.

The success rate in residential areas is not all that encouraging as people tend to forget the saplings after a ceremonial planting.
But the green march continues.
We should encourage such organisations as providing green cover is of enormous benefit not only to Madurai but humanity in general.
