I think people really need to read the Master Plan so they understand why they are doing what they are doing through out the course of this project:
Master Plan - READ IT |

![]() yeah i know. it is just kinda hard to explain things properly when you can't be bothered. i figured since the discussion was already had, most people would understand what i meant.

Interesting building technique. The roof and walls of the underground walkway have already been poured. Once they're set, they begin excavating the soil from inside and then lay and tank the floor. A kind of mixture of cut-and-cover and tunnelling. Currently the roof extends from platforms 6/7, under the tracks, to 5 and then under the building foundation. Not sure how much they've poured on the Wellington Street side. The large rectangle cavity (bottom right) in one of your pictures will be a stair and lift access to the tunnel. Further up Platform 5 is a second stair access cavity. Another thing I didn't realise is they will divert four separate tracks into the dive tunnel. So trains that originate from Armadale, Midland and Thornlie can continue to Fremantle. I just love having someone explain this stuff. |

Almost right. 6 (Armadale peak) and 7 (Fremantle) will merge into one track, and 8 (Midland) and 9 (Extra) will merge into one track. Both of these merged tracks will go into the tunnel. 3 (Australind), 4 (Thornlie) will remain the same. 5 (Armadale) will turn into a dead end.

Public info campaign of the upcoming station closure/layout changes is starting to ramp up. PTA is using a cute little slogan "We're growing to keep you going" with a tree made from train tracks.
The station is now plastered with signage, and I noticed this video being retweeted on twitter today. Also from twitter, hoarding up in the Perth Underground tunnel for the new underpass connection. And I noticed the other day installation of lots of plasmas on the eastern concourse, presumably new information displays. I hope they are as easy to read as the LED matrix ones they currently have on the platforms... Source |

The tunnel is for a new set of tracks emerging from the Midland Line into the new platform.

It'll be fantastic from a public infrastructure POV, but Perth Station is going to be an horrifically ugly mess.

Agreed, it's a fantastic project but it's going to end up looking rather piecemeal. One day, one day I would like to see a project in this city that is actually inspiring. Certainly not holding my breath though.

I think the underpass will make a massive difference to the rail connectivity. I hope they have live boards showing the next trains at the entrance to each platform in the underpass.
No need to upgrade the roof, it offers some natural light and creates a big covered area. Most people don't even notice it. I think the platform upgrades are far more important - they are the areas everyone looks at when they use the station. |
