Water network to come under automated control
The entire drinking water supply distribution network in the city would soon come under an automated control and monitoring system soon as the Corporation has decided to go in for a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
According to Corporation sources, both the new Rs.221.42 crore drinking water supply augmentation scheme, currently under execution, and the existing water schemes catering to the city would be brought under the system. Though the Corporation had previously proposed for SCADA system to be operated through VSAT, it has now decided to go in for a GPRS-based system, which involves lower capital investment and maintenance expenditure. The Corporation has taken technical assistance from the National Institute of Technology and Anna University to implement the project. Through the system, the Corporation would be able to monitor and control the entire water works, distribution system consisting of pumping stations, control devices like valves and various other flow pressure monitoring and regulating facilities. Besides, the Corporation would be able to regulate the system to ensure equitable supply to all parts of the city, a Corporation engineer said. Control rooms would also be established in various parts of the city to monitor and control the distribution network. The project is expected to the commissioned over the next one year, sources said. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle3740215.ece |

Weed clearing at Kottai Vaical begins
![]() Tiruchi Corporation on Wednesday commenced work on clearing the Kottai Vaical, a major drain in the city that serves as an important flood carrier during the monsoon, near Chinthamani. The corporation has taken up the annual exercise to remove silt in the drainages in the city ahead of the monsoon, with an initial allotment of Rs.10 lakh. While work has begun on removing the silt on other major drains such as the Kathirkai Vaical on the Vayalur Road, the work on Kottai Vaical began on Wednesday and is expected to go on for a week to 10 days. The work began on a modest scale with a handful of workers being deployed to remove the lush weed growth at the tail end of the drainage canal near Chinthamani. But a corporation press release, issued after an inspection by Mayor A.Jaya and other corporation officials during the day, claimed that 25 workers have been deployed to clear the weed growth. The deployment of labourers for the work has raised eyebrows among locals, who pointed out that the given the enormity of the task the work should be carried out only by machines. Corporation officials when contacted, however, said that manual workers would be deployed only in the initial stage to clear the weed growth and drain the stagnant water. Earthmovers cannot be used at this stage with stagnant sewage running eight feet in depth, they said and added that machines would be used from Thursday once the water was drained. Though the corporation has constructed retaining walls along the canal, it is frequently clogged owing to dumping of garbage by residents and commercial establishments. The Kottai Vaical serves as the main storm water drain for several residential colonies in Thillai Nagar, Woraiyur, Thennur, Anna Nagar and Madurai Road. Meanwhile, Ms.Jaya also inspected the progress of works on clearance of silt on the Samba Vaical in Srirangam, the Kathirikai Vaical in K.Abishekapuram zone and the Rettai Vaical in Ariyamangalam zone. |

![]() When will Trichy people wake up? The train is not even one month old but Manaparai people already had several protests for stopping the express at their place, but even after 10 years I have not seen a single protest from Trichy people for restoration of RF express or other trains that were extended from Trichy. |

I strongly doubt would the people of Trichy or even Delta would give strong voice, if at all a committee was formed as in Cbe, as the people takes everything for null, if they have they wont feel if they dont have too they dont care, It would be only us who are bashing for these activities. I have seen it in front of my own eyes, when TPJ-SBC Special was slated for termination not even a single voice was heard, people are ready to pay KSRTC 350/450 and go well, so only KSRTC is running 8 service to Trichy of which 4 are direct daily. Heard that some organisation was giving pamplets/ sticked notices in Srirangam railway station to continue the run of special. Poor souls like us made what they could do. ![]()

Intercity rattles with poor patronage
The Railways has introduced a few trains and increased the frequency of a few other trains originating and passing via the central districts. All these trains, except the Tiruchi-Tiruneveli intercity express, have been enjoying good patronage from day one.
The tri-weekly Mannargudi-Tirupathi express, the Tiruchi-Tirunelveli intercity express are the new trains announced in the Railway Budget and introduced recently. The Bangalore-Salem passenger train has been extended to Nagore while the Mannargudi-Tiruchi passenger to Karaikudi. Besides, the tri-weekly Madurai-Tirupathi express was extended to Rameswaram and its frequency increased to three days a week. All these trains have been well patronised, confirm railway sources. But the ‘not-so-encouraging’ patronage for the Tiruchi-Tirunelveli intercity express, which was introduced following persistent demands, is a little disappointment not only to the railway authorities, but also to commuters. “More than 350 reserved seats are lying vacant in this train every day ever since it was introduced on July 14,” pointed out a senior railway official. The poor patronage is despite the suitable timings and very reasonable fare. The train leaves Tiruchi junction at 7.15 a.m., reaches Madurai at 9.35 a.m. and Tirunelveli at 1 p.m. In the return direction, the train leaves Tirunelveli at 2.15 p.m., arrives at Madurai at 4.45 p.m. and Tiruchi at 8 p.m. The ticket fare from Tiruchi to Tirunelveli is Rs.100 in second class reserved sitting, Rs.85 in general second class and Rs.354 in AC chair car. The ticket fare is much cheaper compared to Rs.220 in State Express Transport Corporation buses from Tiruchi to Tirunelveli. Previously, the Railways introduced a new train in the Tiruchi-Madurai section, leaving Tiruchi in the morning and Madurai in the evening. The service was abruptly done away within 20 days of introduction. Since then, people have been demanding the resumption of this train and its extension up to Tirunelveli. The intercity express is also a good connection for the people of southern districts, who can not get reserved accommodation in the south-bound overnight trains. They could reach Tiruchi and travel to Madurai and Tirunelveli in the intercity express, says Louis of Dindigul, who is a regularl commuter on the intercity express. Thanjavur District Rail Users Association has pleaded for the extension of this train to Thanjavur. Such an initiative will enable in having good patronage in both directions, says A. Giri, vice president of the association. Such an arrangement will provide the people of southern districts in reaching Cuddalore by catching the Mannargudi-Chennai and Karaikal-Chennai express in Thanjavur, and also the people of Cuddalore district in reaching down south, he says. If the extension is made, the empty rakes will have to be brought to Tiruchi in the night for maintenance. The Railways to improve patronage, introduced the current reservation facility in the intercity express a few days ago. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle3773862.ece |

![]() This is bogus and Who said other trains introduced are running full? There is no reference to the overcrowded unreserved coaches or the recently introduced current reservation that should have already increased the patronage of reserved coaches. Corporation eyes G.Corner as new site for wholesale markets
After several unsuccessful attempts to identify a suitable site for shifting the wholesale sections of the Gandhi Market to the outskirts of the city over the past couple of decades, Tiruchi Corporation is now exploring the feasibility of relocating the wholesale markets to G.Corner grounds near Golden Rock.
The site owned by the corporation is located off the Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass road. It was one of the sites that was considered for establishing an integrated bus stand some years ago. The latest move of the corporation comes after the Madras High Court Bench struck down, some months ago, the sale of 3.39 acres of land belonging to the Tiruchi District Cooperative Milk Producers Union (Aavin) to Tiruchi Corporation. The corporation had planned to acquire the land for relocating the wholesale markets. The “sale” of the old dairy farm to the corporation was pushed through hurriedly during the previous government despite stiff opposition from milk producers. Prior to this, the corporation had planned to shift the wholesale markets to a site off the Chennai Bypass Road, also close to Ariyamangalam. The proposal too had failed to take off. Left with no other option but to take a fresh look at the issue and identify a new site, the corporation is now examining the suitability of the G.Corner site for the purpose. On Monday, Mayor A.Jaya and Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani along with senior officials inspected the site. The corporation plans to relocate the wholesale banana, onion and jaggery markets, which are literally functioning now on the roadsides along the Gandhi Market to this spot. Corporation sources, however, indicated that the suitability of the site has to be considered, before a proposal was firmed up. Mr.Thandapani too echoed similar views. “It was a preliminary visit. We have to examine the feasibility in detail,” he told The Hindu . Meanwhile, H.Ghouse Baig, secretary of Golden Rock branch of Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, said any move to shift the wholesale markets to G.Corner should be considered if and only after an underpass was built across the four-lane Chennai Bypass Road. Residents of Golden Rock and other residential colonies have been demanding construction of an underpass at the G.Corner junction as they have been denied direct access to Golden Rock from the highway after it was become four lane. “If the wholesale markets were to be shifted here, all lorries transporting goods would have to use the service lanes, adding to the traffic problems at the junction,” he said and urged the corporation to initiate steps to build an underpass before going ahead with the proposal to shift the markets to the G.Corner grounds. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle3774240.ece |
