Fashion's Soulmates at Kochi

It all started some years ago. Three fun-loving girls decided to put to test their talents in a dance reality show that’s instrumental in spotting many young talents.

The show, Thakkadhimi, not only brought forth the unlimited talent of an emerging actress but also saw a strong bond develop between the three.

As if to seal their years of friendship and bonhomie, the Soul Sisters, consisting of Rima Kallingal, Sweta Vijay and Neeta Manoj are now on a mission: to convert their love for art and fashion into a business reality.

The threesome, who just finished showcasing their repertoire at an exhibition titled Fashion Circus in Kozhikode and Thrissur, is happy about the rave response and waiting to enthrall fashionistas among the Kochiites soon.

Query about the term Soul Sisters, an apt term to identify their unfailing friendship, and Rima can’t wait to explain how much her friends mean to her.

“These are the two special people in my life, who challenge me to journey beyond myself, to take more risks and know I am in safe arms.

We are indeed sisters by soul though not by blood,” she gushes, adding, “We always have dreams at the same time, and such a dream resulted in the label Soul Sisters.”

Rima even agrees that the past two years have been the best phase of her life. “I’m glad cinema lovers have accepted me for what I am,” says the actor who will next be seen in Malayalam flicks Venallinde Kallaneekangal and Ayalum Njaanum.

Yes, it’s been a rollercoaster ride from a journalist to a dancer to a Miss Kerala runner-up to an actor!

But all this has not quenched Rima’s addiction for experimenting with life. “This is what leads me to a new venture in life, Soul Sisters.

” Friends, Rima Kallingal, Swetha Vijay and Neeta, can’t wait to show off the fruits of their one-year effort that’ll unfurl in a multitude of designs in saris and jewellery.

Fashion Circus, the two-day exhibition starting on August 4 at Abad Plaza, will be inaugurated by Asif Ali and it will culminate in a fashion show that’ll see many from the film industry walking the ramps.

Actress Rima Kallingal, who has started her own designer label 'Soul Sisters' with her childhood friends, Swetha Vijay and Neetha Manoj, exhibited their collection for the first time in Kochi the other day. The two-day exhibition was inaugurated by actor Asif Ali and Hibi Eden MLA, which was attended by bigwigs from the film and fashion industry. After Thrissur and Calicut, this is the third time that Rima and her partners are organising an exhibition of their collections.

While the first two exhibitions had handpicked readymade attires and accessories, the trio decided to opt for self-designed ensembles and accessories this time. "Kochi is the fashion hub of Kerala. So we exhibited a lot of innovative designs in cotton and linen fabrics in saris," says Rima

A wide range of elegant ethnic Indian wear, including saris, semi-stitched salwar suits, skirts, African-beaded jewellery and other artefacts were on display. Celebrities like Gautami Nair, Poornima Indrajith, Ranjani Haridas, Reshmi, Sarayu, O G Sunil, Asha Sunil, and DJ Savyo made their presence felt at the do.

Designer wear, boutiques: roam panampilly nagar.(namely the one near passport office)
Normal stuff: any of those max stores at nucleus mall or kakkanad or something.you could try reliance trends too.

You have all the usual levi's, lee, pepe, wrangler, hilfiger, w, etc.
Max and reliance trends have some bossini too.
If your looking for pure western wear, boutiques in panapilynagar may be the one (they could be expensive, mind you..)

Tripunithura ready for Athaghosham

KOCHI: If one goes by celebrations held across the state to mark the start of Onam festivities, Tripinuthura's Athaghosham, the state-sponsored form of the 200-year-old traditional procession which was known as Athachamayam, would come first.

The royal town is all set to flag off the 10-day long festivities from the Boys' High School on Tuesday with the procession at 10 am. The age-old Athachamayam procession, though led by Kochi kings had the participation of representatives from all religions and castes. Nettoor Thangal, the priest from the Karingachira church and Chembil Arayan, who represented fisherfolk, were all regulars in the procession during the royal reign.

"Both sides of the streets would be filled with people, eagerly waiting to see the king during the procession," recalled 90-year-old Elamana Hari, who was the superintendent of Hill Palace during the reign of the last Kochi king, Rama Varma Pareekshith Thampuran.

Though, during early times, the procession started from the Hill Palace and proceeded to the Thrikkakkara Vamana Moorthy Temple, it was confined to the royal streets of Tripunithura after the Zamorin of Calicut invaded Vanneri, a province under the control of Kochi state. Interestingly, from the year after the invasion, the Kochi kings kept the crown on their laps during the Atham procession.

Athaghosham, the name adopted after the state government took over the ritual over 40 years ago, is organized by the Tripunithura municipality, and showcases the cultural facets of Kerala, including the staging of art forms, parades by scouts, police band and tableaux.

The floats, the most attractive part of the procession, will reflect contemporary socio-cultural issues of the state.

Typical folk art forms such as Theyyam, Poothanum Thirayum, Kummatti, Karakaattam, and Kolkali will also be a part of the parade. In the evening, cultural programmes will begin, starting with the colourful pookkalam competition at the Layam ground. Assembly speaker G Karthikeyan will inaugurate the procession at Atham Nagar (Boys' High School).
