So hopefully, we will see a Kolkata, we never imagined in our lives, withing the next 4 years. Think of it, a brand new elevated world class metro, some really good flyovers, widened roads of 8 lanes, with lush green dividers, and a Hong Kong style skyscraper boom. If all these are completed, Kolkata can always be classified as one of the BEST in India and Asia, if not the world......just keep your hopes held high.
Yes.. Kolkata floats on hope.. So very soon we will have elevated metro, skyscrapers and lush green dividers.. Nice..

PS: Sometimes I get the nightmare that government will default on their huge debt payments and all the projects will get stuck. Can you suggest some pills to stop these nightmares?

The best that I can suggest is that in the new private-public partnership style, let the private companies pay 55%. The central government is RICH(4 trillion$ is NO JOKE). So, it pays 35%. The government just pays TEN %, and thus saves a HUGE deal. Also, there should be more than ONE private partner.

The WB government should invite more international IT companies and also promote the growth of industries(like Gujarat). This earns the govt. a LOT of money.

Mamata, the 'gariber CM' prevented the establishment of a SEZ, just for the farmers. This shouldn't be done. The farmer's will earn more, and will lead better lives in the SEZ. When the TATA factory was closed in Bengal, Modi invited then to Gujarat. This was really bad. Now, the same is happening to Maruti Suzuki. This should be prevented at all cost.....

Does somebody have any news of the elevated freeway that was to be constructed all around the city. There is this poster saying ,'due to the construction of the elevated corridor the following bus services are closed', in front of the Park Circus island, near DBPC. I see that everyday, but see no progress whatsoever....

What about the LRTS that they were supposed to construct through the middle of the city??? Any approval????

Aug 2013 deadline for Kolkata's longest flyover
Suman Chakraborti, TNN | Aug 7, 2012, 05.06AM IST
Quote:

KOLKATA: The city's skyline is set to change in another year when India's second longest flyover and the longest in eastern India is thrown open to vehicular traffic. The deadline for completion of the project - the Park Circus-Parama Island flyover being built by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) - is August 2013.

The main flyover's length will be 4.5km and the total length including all its ramps will be 9.2km. Work on the flyover, which has been pegged at Rs 320 crore, started in February 2010 after a year's delay. The work speeded up after the new government was formed. Till now, almost 45% of the project has been completed and work is going on in full swing to meet the deadline. Last week, state urban development minister and KMDA chairman Firhad Hakim inspected the progress in construction. Work on building the flyover's girders began last week.

The major components of the flyover project are construction of RCC columns, steel girders, RCC beams, deck slabs and electrification and installation of road furniture. "The flyover is going to change the city's skyline. We are working in full swing to complete the project on time," said KMDA chief executive officer Vivek Bharadwaj. The longest flyover in India is in Hyderabad.

The Park Circus-Parama Island flyover will not only change the city's skyline, it will also act as the new link between the central business district and the northern part of Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA). The flyover is estimated to accommodate over 1 lakh vehicles per day, officials said. This will not only ease traffic congestion on the EM Bypass, but also make EM Bypass a fast moving corridor.

The flyover's east-bound wing will touch Bridge No. 4 near Park Circus and then connect AJC Bose flyover at the Beckbagan crossing. There will be two local flyovers at the Dhapa crossing which will be linked with the main flyover. There will also be a ramp to connect Ambedkar bridge on the EM Bypass for vehicles that will move towards Garia.

The numerous connecting links of the flyover will ease out traffic congestion on the EM Bypass and Park Circus connector. The flyover will have a connecting link with the AJC Bose Road flyover that starts a little far from Park Circus.

KMDA officials said that all the latest advanced technology is being used for constructing the flyover. "Once the flyover is completed and opened, the authorities will start work on beautifying the entire stretch below, similar to the beautification project below the stretch of the EM Bypass-VIP Road flyover.

Puja 2013 deadline for flyover (Vivekananda Road F/O)

Quote:
Work on the Vivekananda Road flyover, which started in 2009, has gained pace after a long lull. The flyover, that will connect Girish Park and Nimtala Ghat Street to Howrah bridge, would allow commuters to bypass the congested Posta crossing.

Construction had almost stopped last year because of technical problems as well as objections from residents who apprehended accidents because the flyover runs close to their homes, said the authorities of Calcutta Metropolitan Authority (CMDA).

CMDA officials are claiming that the problems have been resolved and have promised to open the stretch between Girish Park and Howrah bridge before Durga Puja next year.

Another part of the flyover — the ramp connecting the Posta crossing with Nimtala Ghat Street — will, however, face delays.

Metro does a recce of the construction site and prepares a progress report.

Project: A 2.2km-long flyover that will enable vehicles from Girish Park and Nimtala Ghat Street to reach Howrah bridge without facing the snarls of the Posta area. The flyover promises a quicker alternative to vehicles headed towards Burrabazar, Posta and Howrah from north and east Calcutta. “This flyover will ensure that no one would have to wait at Posta, which is always congested because it is a business hub,” said a CMDA engineer.

There are two arms of the flyover: a 1.6km arm is from Girish Park and ends opposite the old mint on Strand Road. Another 600metre ramp starts near the Old Bhutnath temple on Nimtala Ghat Street. It will join the Girish Park arm over the Posta crossing. The entire flyover will be of four lanes, two lanes each for east- and west-bound traffic.

Cost: Rs 164 crore

Original deadline: Mid-2011

New deadline: Before Durga Puja 2013

Status: CMDA officials have promised to throw open the 1.6km stretch between Girish Park and Howrah bridge by Puja 2013. “We have overcome most of the obstacles that held up the project for long. The flyover will be complete by 2013,” an engineer said.

An engineer claimed the work would finish fast. “All kinds of work — such as building girders, deck slabs and piers — are going on simultaneously. The work is on full swing and we have completed about 46 per cent of it,” the engineer added.

A senior CMDA official, however, said not all obstacles have been cleared yet. “There are still objections from some residents. They are not allowing us to barricade the road to the extent we would have preferred. This will delay the work to an extent,” he said.

“We are trying our best to commission the flyover before Durga Puja next year. But there is always a risk of missing the deadline because working in such a busy area is very difficult,” conceded Vivek Bharadwaj, the chief executive engineer of CMDA.

But there is no word on when work on the Nimtala Ghat Street ramp would begin. An official said they would have to wait till the civic body shifted a brick sewer running under the road. “Our hands are tied. The civic body has to first remove the sewer line. It’s difficult to say when work on the road will start,” added the official.

The construction work along Vivekananda Road and KK Tagore Street has taken its toll on the area’s traffic. Snarls are common in the area since barricades have taken up almost half the road space. “Only one lane is free for vehicular movement. The traffic becomes worse because KK Tagore Street is a lorry corridor and large vehicles ply on it throughout the day,” said a traffic police officer.

Reasons for delay: Multiple utility networks running underground and some objections from local residents were the primary reasons that held up work. “Electricity, water, telephone and gas lines run under the road. We noticed these utility lines when we first dug up the road. They had to be shifted before we could erect the piers,” said a CMDA engineer. Engineers said the shifting of utility lines took the most time, which delayed the project.

Total span of 9.2 kms? Great.
With 45% work completed, will they be able to pull up the remaining 55% within a year. I have doubts.

These deadlines are announced periodically to show the concerned authorities are not sleeping. If they say August 2014 is the deadline, then people will be upset. Once August 2013 comes, a fresh deadline will be announced with a lot of fanfare.

The relatively easier parts have taken so long a time to come into being - now it is on the PC side which has its own complications - with 55% remaining looks improbable if not impossible to stick to this time line unless one sees construction from all possible sides.

I guess its very difficult to stand there for even a moment to take a snap, let alone getting a vantage point - such is the state of affairs in that area

Today, I had no car of mine. So I had to take a bus from Moulali to Manicktala. And man, it was such a fuss!!!! I had to wait for half an hour for a bus which wasn't overcrowded. At last I got one. So it took me 1 hour to travel from Moulali to Manicktala. Now this wouldn't happen if there was a swanky lrts on the road, providing a/c coaches every 1 minute.....

Yesterday I saw a Limousine (Lexus Motors) infront of Millenium City, Sector-5. I was talking over phone and was so much awe-struck, that I couldn't take a snap of that. It was of Punjab (PB) registration.... Have anyone of you seen this car in Kolkata?
