Oh well, I noticed a plot in Rajdanga a year ago with a board claiming that teh ICAI building is going to come up there...may be they are shifting it to Rajarhat.

New Town to get country’s biggest convention centre






Kolkata: The city will soon get two Science City-like convention centers, one in Rajarhat New Town and the other in Alipore. The New Town centre will be one of the biggest in the country, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said at a programme in Rajarhat on Tuesday.
The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has chalked out the artistic impression for the New Town project, which will have a seating capacity of about 6,000-odd people. The centre will come up on a 10-acre plot in Rajarhat’s Action Area II.
According to plans, there will be a plenary hall and two other halls along with adjustable seating arrangements. The convention centre will also have a business and media centre, a documentation hall and a studio. Besides, it will have other support facilities like a VIP lounge, a guest house, a library and a cafeteria along with a parking area for about 1,000 cars.
“The centre will be one of the biggest in the country. We have just started working on the project plan. We will discuss the project in detail at our next board meeting,” said Hidco chairman-cum-managing director Debashis Sen. The project cost and other details will be worked out soon.
The second centre, much smaller but equally attractive, will come up at Alipore as the Dhana Dhanya cultural complex. The state government has decided to set up this centre to commemorate Dwijendralal Roy’s 150th birth anniversary this year. A 3-acre plot has been identified beside the South 24-Parganas district magistrate’s bungalow. An auditorium on the lines of Science City will be set up in it. There will also be proper parking lots. The government is chalking out a detailed plan on the auditorium’s seating capacity and its architectural design.
Both centers will be commercially used for social and cultural programmes. The convention centre in Rajarhat will be used for international seminars and conferences.

I don't think one can compare this two projects..one was completely a private initiative and the private party was not in a hurry...last heard from PS blog that they are putting pressure on Prasun Mukherjee to expedite this project...on the other hand this one is completely a hidco project...I don't think how one can reject other..

If it is a Prasun Mukherjee project (universal success) it will be obviously delayed! No need to give projects to people with dubious repute..

This guy got a lot of projects due to proximity to political parties, but he hardly delivers anything.

Is the Hidco Convention Centre coming up on the KICC land? Then we can say that it is being replaced. Otherwise, Hidco & KICC are two separate projects altogether; KICC is supposed to be built by USE, which is obviuosly delayed for reasons unknown.

and the largest convention centre of a country as big as India (and a city as large as Kolkata) should be designed to host at least 10,000 people. A single auditorium need not be that gigantic, but meetings in several lounge rooms should be able to accommodate numbers close to an aggregate of 10,000. It is not a magic number, but a general thumb rule -- looking at some of the largest academic conferences in today's world.

I hope the KICC is as big. At least, the design is superb.

as it is our lives are full of complexity and clutter. why add to it by unnecessary smarty geometric shapes. can't the architects keep it simple? at least make it pleasing to the eye from the outside?

it's like the local rajmistri adding a few "rhombuses" above the windows, or the grillmaster creating complex (and horrible) patterns with iron rods/bars -- just for "effect." and what an effect it is!!

We had the Digha Shankarpur Development Authority (DSDA) meeting today at the Science Centre Auditorium because the Saikatabas conference room is under renovation. I came last evening and stayed at Saikatabas which is being renovated.
I inspected several sites in the morning.
We took the following decisions (1) Along with the Digha gate, landscaping will be done in two other places (2) As a hotel has already done in one site, others will also be requested to take up roadside beautification (3) A plot of land near Udaipur Beach in New Digha will be set up for auction for a 3 star hotel (4) A budget hotel will be set up on a half-complete structure where the top floor will be given to DSDA (5) "Nulias" will be appointed to ensure safety of tourists in sea (6) An electric crematorium will be set up on way to Digha Mohana (7) EOI will be invited for a ropeway in Amravati Park (8) Drainage works will be taken up in critical areas (9) Pace of afforestation will be accelerated by forest department.

We'd made an amendment few months ago in the New Town Kolkata (Building) Rules 1999 wherein it was made compulsory to install Closed Circuit TVs (CCTV) and Security Alarms for all buildings in plots having size of 1 acre or more. This provision is verified while giving Occupancy Certificates. Recently I was reminded of this provision due to the shockingly tragic case of Pakhi's* murder. I undertook a review with NKDA officers and discovered that CCTVs and Security Alarms were installed in a dozen or so such bulk housings or commercial institutions. I have called for a fresh inspection and review.
