rhetorical question, i know, but there's only so much space for a city on an island the size of Manhattan.

The city concentrates high rise construction in Midtown and Lower Manhattan because those two areas have the best mass transit infrastructure. It has nothing to do with, let's build our office building there because that's where everyone else built theres.
And you forgot to mention that in Lower Manhattan and Midtown the bedrock is much better for build skyscrapers. In space between, the soli is not that great so the high buildings would be more expensive to build.

The idea that the depth of bedrock has had a significant influence on the formation of the modern Manhattan skyline is false. I don't know why people still believe this urban legend. Here's a paper that was published in the The Journal of Economic History, by two professors, one from Rutgers and one from Fordham. It's an interesting read, only about 25 pages.

Latest update! This one is massive, it's just in such a dense area that the 'massive-ness' isn't easy to take in.

This one has definitely topped out. Now it looks like they are working on the 'roof box' which looks like it will be some sort of illuminated element. On to the photos.

I won't consider it topped until the roof box is finished, but that was a REALLY fast build.
