What the heck happened there? Are they going to reconstruct this gem?

I mean... How barbaric is that?

I find it ironic how many Architects have worked to preserve these things over the past 50 years, yet much of their work tends to be very petty compared to what they work hard on preserving.

It depends what the customer wants to pay for. The architect isn't going to be footing the bill.

not necessarily. Ive seen plenty of charming good looking structures that would fit the average bill fine, such as the stuff i posted from richmond

Not exactly. Brussels is has 3 historical districts destroyed in peace time, one of them is now where the EU quarters is located. And just think about N-American cities and their urban "renewal" projects in wich the whole historic downtown was ofthen completely destroyed.

Starting in the 60s the socialdemocrats decided to make Stockholm a modern city by implementing the modernist school of thought in architecture, which meant big office complexes in central Stockholm and wide roads to accomodate alot of traffic. The idea was that people would live in the suburbs and commute into the city. This decision meant the destruction of the 2nd oldest part of the city, known as Klara.

According to estimates about 700 houses were demolished to make way for what's honestly some of the ugliest building I've ever seen and Klara was more or less depopulated. Several buildings were of cultural value, such as Tobias Sergel's studio (he's a famous sculptur) which was replaced by five high rises* and Tre Remmare, a pub mentioned in the writings of Sweden's national poet Bellman's work from the late 18th century, which was replaced by a parking house.

Poor Stockholm

I've been to Malmö last week. I heard it got a large portion of its old heritage destroyed as well, but damn... It looks like they had a war

Sweden was pretty badass in the 60s/70s. Damn commies!

You have to remember that Scandinavia were among the least urbanized areas of Europe after WW2. Which meant that once large-scale urbanization kicked in, all administration (Government, Municipality, corporations etc) expanded rapidly and needed new offices, which meant property speculations in the inner cities and need for expansions to accomodate for all new needs.

As in Sweden they didn't have a war on ground in the Americas. You could look there for equal examples but where city planning was on a far larger scale.

Indonesia also has same problems with yours. Our reckless government let some of our historic buildings being demolished and changed into modern buildings by greedy developers due to economic development. This is the example why government didn't care about preserving historic buildings. And their main priority is money. $$$

Here is the example

Hotel Des Indes Jakarta (today Duta Merlin Plaza)

Simpang Hospital Surabaya / Central Burgerlijke Ziekenhuis (today Plasa Surabaya Mall)

De Harmonie Lodge, Jakarta

And still many colonial buildings lost in Indonesia until now.

Also in Medan, we have some historic building lost and replaced by modern and commercial structures.

KNI office, Sukamulya St., Medan

Medan Mayor Office (now Aston Hotel)

Medan Esplanade (form changing in 2008)

Karapatan Deli Building

Ex MULO Dutch School

Lindeteves Stokvis Office Medan

If still more historic building demolished probably Medan will get the same fate like Manila and Jakarta.
