NMAM Institute of Technology plans centre to make youths employable

Quote:
MANGALORE: Acknowledging that several educated youths fail to get jobs as they lack soft and vocational skills, the NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT) of Nitte Education Trust in association with the state government is planning to open an exclusive centre to train them. The centre will give free add-on and certificate courses for engineering, ITI, diploma and other graduates.

NMAMIT, which has been offering vocational training for the past four years for about 40 students, will now be able to provide the same for over 1,000 students when the proposed vocational training centre becomes a reality.

The centre will offer courses in advanced computer applications, animation and seven other areas.

The motto of setting up such a centre is making the educated youths employable in both private and public sectors and helping the private companies do away with in-house training for the newly joined employees in soft skills and other technical skills.

NMAMIT principal Niranjan N Chiplunkar said that the new centre would come up on five acres of land at a cost of about Rs 4 crore.

"The centre is coming up under the state government sponsored scheme Suvarna Kayaka Koushalyabhivridhi Yojane. According to the scheme the government will give Rs 800 per candidate as the fee. The courses will commence in October," he added.

The duration of the courses will be between six months and one year. Vice-principal I R Mithanthaya said that the college would provide free accommodation to the students. "This is the first such vocational training centre in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district," he added.

Nanthoor college to offer course in Vedic heritage and culture

Quote:
Shree Bharathi College at Nanthoor will offer a six-month diploma course in Vedic heritage and culture from Saturday.

Principal of the college G.N. Bhat told The Hindu that the course was not offered by any university. It would be offered with an objective of imparting knowledge for all.

The 130-hour instruction course would end on January 31, 2013.

Mr. Bhat said that those who had passed SSLC could take up the course without any upper age limit. Classes would be held on Saturdays from 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Sundays from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. The medium of instruction would be Kannada.

Mr. Bhat said that the course would have four papers of 100 marks each – Vedic literature, Samskrit literature, chanting of Vedic mantras and Ithihasa and Puranas.

A paper on Vedic literature would have four chapters. It would deal with philosophical principles of Vedas and Upanishads, historical cultural and social aspects of the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and the Atharvaveda and 10 major Upanishads. In addition, a candidate could learn science and technology of Vedas, techniques for personality transformations, and the like, he said.

The paper on Sanskrit literature would teach origin and development of Mahakavyas, stotra granthas, lyric and gnomic poems, popular tales, fables and Sankrit dramas. There would be a 40-hour chanting of Vedic mantras during the course. It would cover Shanti Mantra, Bhruguvalli, Purusha Sukta, Medha Sukta, and the like, he said.

The last paper on Ithihasa and Puranas would have introduction to the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha, brief introduction to 18 puranas, structure of skanda purana, concept of dharma, and the like, he said.

Mr. Bhat said that in 1993, when he was associated with a degree college at Kateel, he started a certificate and a diploma course in Veda, Tantra and Aagama for students only.

The college still offered courses recognised by Mangalore University.

In 2003, a degree college at Gandhinagar in the city launched a certificate and diploma course in Veda, Tantra and Aagama. The college wound up the courses for want of students, he said.

He said that during 18{+t}{+h}century, European scholars such as Max Muller and Moriz Winternitz studied Vedic heritage and culture extensively and had written books.

Government Polytechnic yet to get its own building

Quote:
Ganesh Prabhu

The Government Polytechnic functions at the building of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Udupi.

Hostel building has not been handed over because of dues

Lack of basic facilities and inadequate infrastructure have affected the functioning of the Government Polytechnic here.

The polytechnic began functioning in 2008 from the three rooms of the Veterinary Department at Bailoor before being shifted to the Kemthur School next year. It was subsequently shifted to the new building of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) at Yemabathu Badagabettu.

The polytechnic, which offers diploma in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communications (E&C), and Computer Science, had a strength of 413 students last year. The intake this year is still not clear as the process of admission is under way.

Out of 86 sanctioned teaching and non-teaching posts, only 12 had been filled at the polytechnic. Out of 31 sanctioned lecturer posts only six had been filled. The polytechnic is now functioning with the help of 20 part-time lecturers much to the discomfiture of the students.

According to Srinivas Bhat, a final year student pursuing E&C course, lack of classrooms is a big worry. “Many a times, combined classes are held for first year for English and Mathematics. The hydraulics lab has been hardly used,” he said.

Mohammed Saddam, a final year civil engineering student, said there was no hostel facility for the students coming from other districts. Many students were staying as paying guests and in rented rooms, which were in distant places such as Udyavar and Hiriyadka. There was no women’s hostel for the polytechnic.

“Some students have to change three buses from Udupi to reach the polytechnic. To board a direct bus to Udupi from the polytechnic, students have to walk 1.5 km to Manchi,” he said. Registrar of the Polytechnic Lakshmeesha Bhat said that though the women’s hostel had been built at a cost of Rs. 1 crore, it had not been handed over to the polytechnic yet.

The inaugural function was held in February and ever since the facility remained unutilised as the polytechnic owed Rs. 10 lakh to the contractor. Mr. Bhat agreed that there was shortage of classrooms. The foundation stone for the construction of a new building for the polytechnic was laid at Shivally in February. The building was expected to come up in two years at a cost of Rs. 8 crore, he said.

Increase in use of LCD projectors for teaching

Quote:
Pavan M V, TNN | Aug 14, 2012, 06.32AM IST

MANGALORE: The trend of using electronic devices like LCD projectors to conduct classes is catching up in colleges in undivided Dakshina Kannada district. Manipal University (MU) presently has 450 LCD projectors, installed across classrooms and laboratories.

MU director purchase and general services Colonel Badri Narayanan told TOI that in 2001 MU started using LCD projectors but that time they had just one. Later due to an increasing demand from students, classrooms with strength of 100 students were provided LCD projectors. "Now the same facility has been provided to classrooms even with strength of 50 students as LCD projectors help in providing effective teaching," he said.

NMAM Institute of Technology (IT) that had been using 10 LCD projectors to conduct classes installed 15 more LCD projectors in classrooms last year. NMAM IT vice-principal IR Mithanthaya said it helps in avoiding dictation of notes and improves teaching and learning skills, particularly for engineering students as they have to learn about various designs of machines. "Because of the LCD's, teachers do not have to draw figures on boards," he added.

Another city-based Besant Women's college has got an Interactive Whiteboard (IWB), which costs more than lakh rupees. IWB is a large electronic display connected to a computer, where users control it by using pen, stylus or fingers. Beasant Women's College principal Manjula KJ said, "We have been using LCD projectors for the last five years but the specialty of IWB is that internet can be used, which helps the teaching faculty to access videos, pictures and other data related to academics quickly." Marker-boards consume more time to teach as everything has to be written but these electronic devices not only save time but also make learning more interesting for students, she said.

Srinivas Institute of Technology (SIT), which has equipped it classrooms with 44 projectors, plans to install IWBs. SIT principal Shrinivasa Mayya said that these devices also reduce the workload on teachers.

Quote:
Aug 9, 2012, 07.03PM IST

Now, a website that tracks students' academic progress

Quote:
Pavan M V, TNN | Aug 27, 2012, 05.09AM IST

MANIPAL: Manipal University is all set to launch a website that will provide attendance, fees and other details of over 20,000 students studying on its camps.

The facility mainly caters to students who come from other states and countries. Each student and their parents will be given a username and password to log on to the website. Parents can visit the website to know activities and academic progress of their wards on the campus.

MU network administrator Sathish Kamath told TOI that website would be launched within a month.

"Earlier, the varsity used to mail students' attendance and other details to parents. The new website will give more visibility about their activities in institutions to parents. Details of hostel fees paid and dues, and internal and external marks obtained in exams will also be available on the website," he added.

"It is a good move by MU. Parents who stay away from their wards will always be worried about their children. The website will ease their tension. Some students get distracted in Manipal which may lead to lying to their parents and poor performance in exams," said Vinayak Prabhu, an MSc in media and communication student.

Abhishek, a third year electronics and communication engineering student, said that the new website might create problems to students, who are not attending classes properly. "But it gives parents a secured feeling as they can keep an eye on their children and their activities at any point of time," he added.

Manipal University ties up with Irish college

Quote:
Manipal University (MU) will offer a master’s programme in pharmaceutical sciences in association with Hibernia College, Dublin, Ireland, from October 2012.

“The programme will be the first of its kind in the country to provide an understanding of drug development process from the initial discovery through research and development to the regulatory approval process and commercialisation,” said MU chief coordinator, Dr N Udupa.

The programme will enable students to design and manage projects, critically evaluate data and lead multidisciplinary teams. It will also help students gain valuable business and management expertise required for senior positions in the pharmaceutical industry.

Eighty per cent of the course will be conducted online and the remaining 20% through teacher-student participation. The duration of the course is two years and professors from Hibernia College will be part of both online and in-contact programmes.

The Higher Education Technical Awards Council (Level 9) and International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians have given accreditation to the programme. Students who have completed BPharm, MBBS and BDS with at least 55% marks can enrol for the course. Those who are working in pharmaceutical companies are also eligible.

Mangalore varsity now approves admission statements online

Colleges can upload student details on university website
The university creates electronic data bank with details of each undergraduate student
193 colleges affiliated to the university send admission statements online

Quote:
Mangalore University has switched over to receiving and approving of admission statements of undergraduate students from colleges online from this academic year, said Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy. The university had developed a software for the purpose.

Degree colleges would have to send admission statements of first semester undergraduate students to the university online by filling the details in a prescribed format hosted on its websitewww.mangaloreuniversity

.ac.in, he told The Hindu .

Prof. Murthy said the new method had avoided paper work and delay in receiving the admission statements from colleges at the university and in turn colleges receiving the approval statements.

The university had created an electronic data bank of details (with photograph) of each undergraduate student admitted till he passed out of a college by obtaining the convocation certificate. Details would include date of birth, category of merit, marks obtained in pre-university (later at the college), home address, and other aspects. As soon as the university approved the admission of a student it generated a register number for the particular student. The register number would be his or her number to be written in examinations till the student completed the course.

He said that all the 193 colleges affiliated to the university had sent their admission statements online after the last date for admission of undergraduate students (by colleges) for the first semester was over on August 14. Initially, July 13 was the last date for admitting students. Later, it was extended up to August 14 to accommodate those students who had passed the supplementary examinations of the pre-university courses, he said.

Prof. Murthy said the university had approved the admission statements of about half of the colleges. Of the affiliated colleges, 120 were private colleges, 33 were government-aided private colleges, 33 were government colleges, five were autonomous colleges, and two were constituent colleges of the university.

The colleges would have to scan the documents such as marks card, transfer certificate, eligibility certificate, migration certificate, proof for date of birth, and upload them with the admission statement. The software had a provision for verifying the admission statements in different stages by its officials such as Case Worker, Superintendent, Assistant Registrar, and finally the Deputy Registrar.

P.S. Yadapadithaya, Registrar (Administration), said the colleges would be asked to upload the internal assessment marks of students of first, third, and fifth semesters online and send hard copies of the same. “This time we will follow the dual system. For the next second, fourth, and sixth semester examinations to be held in May 2013, we will ask the colleges to upload the internal assessment marks online and discard the system of sending hard copies,” he said.

‘Panel has approved purchase of equipment worth Rs. 3 crore’
Quote:
Mangalore University will set up a centre for research in science with funds from the Union Department of Science and Technology and from its own fund, according to Vice-Chancellor T C Shivashankara Murthy.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Prof. Murthy said the Department of Science and Technology had sanctioned Rs. 9 crore to the university considering its achievement in research in various branches of science. Of the sanctioned amount, Rs. 3 crore has already been released.

The purchase committee of the university a few days ago had approved procurement of science equipment worth Rs. 3 crore. Now the university would seek the approval of the Syndicate, in its meeting next month, for purchasing the equipment, he said.

Oscar: Dakshina Kannada can be made educational hub

Quote:
Dakshina Kannada, which in some sense is an educational village, can be made an absolute educational hub, said Oscar Fernandes, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee for Human Resources here on Saturday.

Speaking at an interaction event held at the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) office on “Education policy”, Mr. Fernandes said land and capital were needed to make educational institutions in the district among the top in the world.

He further said that the Centre believed that the country needs 1,500 more universities to make up for the shortfalls in higher education. “The enrolment in Higher Education is just 13.4 per cent. Distance education and use of technology can increase the percentage,” he said.

Mr. Fernandes said it was worth pondering why none of the Indian universities could make it to a list of top 100 universities in the world. “The students here are gifted, talented, and yet, why is there no university at the top? There is a gap to be filled, and I believe it is research. There is not enough being spent on basic research. There is also not much being done to attract foreign students,” he said.

LEGISLATION

However, he expressed confidence that bills regarding education which would be tabled before the Parliament soon would correct the disparities and imbalances in the system.

The Education Tribunal Bill would set up State- and National-level grievance mechanism system for students and teachers; the Copyright Bill to strengthen intellectual property rights; prohibition of unfair practices to curtail the menace of capitation fees plaguing the admission process in private colleges and universities; Foreign Education Institution Regulatory Bill to regulate the entry of foreign universities into the country; National Accreditation Regulatory Authority that would make accreditation compulsory and thereby increase “competition” among colleges; National Academic Repository Bill that would set up a website wherein students can download their authentic certificates for a fee; Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth and Development; bills for technical education wherein, those in the unskilled sector can be certified through an examination; apart from an overarching bill to govern higher education, he said.

MEMORANDUM

A memorandum submitted to Mr. Fernandes by the KCCI President Mohammad Ameen urged the Union Government to set up a knowledge village in the district, setting up of more universities, greater autonomy to autonomous colleges affiliated to a university, exemption of service tax for educational institutions under construction. Apart from these, KCCI also asked him, in his capacity as a Rajya Sabha MP, to expedite expansion of National Highway between Sakleshpur and Gundiya, air cargo complex at Mangalore Airport and construction of fishing harbour at Kulai, Hosabettu on the outskirts of the city.
TH

How to make DK an educational hub? What is central government role and what is state goverment role? Whether anybody has come up with any plan for for making DK an educational hub?

We have heard of PCPIR, ITIR, NMIZ, SIR, AIR, etc. What about Educational Investment Region - EIR?
