Be an entrepreneur with a social concern

Quote:
HUBLI: Here's a new opportunity for graduates who have a bent of mind to do social service and at the same time aspire for a bright career. The Deshpande Education Trust, (DET) in affiliation with the Karnatak University, Dharwad, will launch the Master of Social Entrepreneurship (MSE) programme at its centre on August 22.

"We will be the first in north Karnataka to start social entrepreneurship course and we are already receiving good response from students who have finished their graduation from different streams like engineering, commerce, science and arts", said Neelam Maheshwari, programme director, MSE.

The MSE programme will cover 25 subjects in four semesters spanning two years. Graduates will be trained in marketing, finance, human resource development, entrepreneurs' development and communication skills. "Already we have received around 45 to 50 applications for the MSE programme and we have selected 13 students for the course so far. The main intention of starting the course is to provide entrepreneurship skills to students as well as prepare them for social work," said Shashidhar M G, coordinator of MSE .

Rajeshwari Kalki of Gadag, who has got enrolled for the programme said that if she chooses MBA, then she will be learning only management skills. But by opting for MSE, she can learn business skills apart from doing social service. Students who have passed degree in any stream can apply for the course, provided they have a passion towards entrepreneurship, blended with a concern for the society.

Live projects, power point presentations and entrepreneur's visits will be part of the curriculum. DET has invited real time entrepreneurs and business heads from across the country and abroad as well as experienced teachers from management background and heads of NGO's to share their experience with the students during the course.

'India's heritage needs to be studied in a new perspective'

Quote:
DHARWAD: India's rich heritage of art and architecture need to be studied with a new look. The ancient monuments were the engineering marvels of this country. Hence, their study will also reveal new things pertaining to the field of architecture, said Vidya Dahejia, Barbara Stoler Miller Professor of Indian and South Asian Art at Columbia University.

Inaugurating the DC Pavate Chair for Art and Archeological Studies at the Karnatak University, Dharwad (KUD) here on Monday, she stressed the need for creating a new generation of historians of art and archeology in India to explore new avenues pertaining to research in this field. Citing instances of the research conducted in the case of Taj Mahal, the Buddhist Stoopa of Sanchi, Hoysala temples in Karnataka and the sculptures of Lord Shiva and Parvati, she said research pertaining to these monumental structures revealed many things pertaining to the art and architecture and the concepts of art.

"It is necessary to take up comparative study of the archival documents and the related monuments. The archival documents related to Taj Mahal helped discover the lake where the Moghal emperor Shah Jahan used to watch the reflection of Taj Mahal on every full moon day. The lake was totally buried in the course of time. Similarly, recent studies of the Hoysala temples revealed certain secrets of engineering technology of those days of ancient Indian art and architecture was a potential field that was yet to be explored fully. The youngsters should make up their mind in this direction", she said.

Ashok Pavate who has sponsored the Chair said Pavate, who was known as the renowned mathematician had deep affinity for culture and history.

"We have much to learn from the technology of the ancient Indian architecture. Hence, there is the need to study them", he said.

Vice-chancellor H B Walikar presided. Ravi Korishettar took charge as the first professor of the Chair on the occasion.

Quote:

Jeevana Shikshana may get fund

Quote:
Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai has promised to see that the 147-year-old Jeevana Shikshana educational magazine, which is published by the District Institute of Educational Training (DIET), receives government funding.

Mr. Bommai made this announcement during a visit to DIET here on Wednesday. Mr. Bommai said the magazine, believed to the first educational bulletin in the country, deserved government funding. He said he would soon take up the matter with Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar.

Mr. Bommai said the government would soon take a decision on organising the golden jubilee celebrations of DIET.

Budgetary allocation

Chandrakant Bellad, Hubli-Dharwad West MLA, suggested regular budgetary allocation for the Jeevana Shikshana and distributing it free in all government schools in the State. As of today, the magazine is being supplied to nine districts in Belgaum division.

Best guide

Mr. Bellad said it was the only magazine dedicated to the cause of education and had been playing a key role in ensuring quality teaching. It had emerged as the best guide for teachers too since its inception in 1865 by visionary educationist Chennabasappa.

The government should form a special fund to print and publish this magazine, he said.

It may be recalled that Jeevana Shikshana magazine is facing a financial crunch owing to non-payment of arrears by some government departments.

Gururaj Deshpande, the cyber Czar

Quote:
Eminent scientists at CERN may be responsible for pioneering Internet. But in celebrating the existence of the world wide web we often forget the entrepreneurs who helped build its backbone in the early days. Gururaj Deshpande is one such entrepreneur.

Born in Hubli, Karnataka, Deshpande has a B. Tech in electrical engineering from IIT, Madras, and a PhD in data communication from the Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. While Deshpande started his career at a Motorola subsidiary in Canada, he later moved to the US and co-founded his first company in 1984 called Coral networks.

After selling off the company for $15 million in 1987, he co-founded Cascade communications, another company that made routers which were some of the first building blocks in the growth of the Internet. His biggest venture till date, which made him a billionaire and put him in the Forbes 400 list, was the founding of Sycamore Networks that sells routing equipment. To this day Deshpande is serving as the Chairman of Sycamore and Tejas Networks, another telecom equipment manufacturer that he founded in Bangalore.

Appointed by President Barack Obama as the Co-Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Deshpande also actively promotes technological innovation with his own money, for which he has started the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at MIT with $20 million.

Fellowships are now available for 25 students

Quote:
The Deshpande Education Trust and Sankalp Semiconductor Private Ltd. have increased the number of fellowships being offered under the Deshpande Susandhi Sankalp Fellowship programme for underprivileged students.

The programme is aimed at training students who have passed second year PUC (Science) in the VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated) Integrated Chip Design Domain, and subsequently providing them with an opportunity to work on a world-class platform.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Vivek Pawar, CEO and founder of Sankalp Semiconductor, and Naveen Jha, CEO of Deshpande Foundation and member of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission, said that they launched the fellowship programme last year with just eight underprivileged students. The response to the programme then had encouraged them to increase the number to 25 this year.

“All eight students now have an opportunity to work on a world-class platform in the VLSI design domain, and will also be getting a stipend,” Mr. Pawar explained.

Role

Mr. Jha spoke about the Deshpande Education Trust’s role in the initiative and said that while the trust took care of the soft skills development, Sankalp took care of the technical training part. “The duration of the course is eight months and it is a residential programme. Since it is for the underprivileged students, we will arrange for loans to meet the expenses involved in the residential programme,” Mr. Jha said.

The final selections for the programme will be held on August 20 at 9 a.m. at the Deshpande Foundation located on BVB College of Engineering and Technology here. Underprivileged students who have cleared II PUC examination can apply. For details, contact the Deshpande Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, BVBCET College Campus, Vidyanagar, Hubli (0836-2378500, 9686654749).
