Renting in Pigtown

Looking to rent in the Pigtown area. I would like to get the opinions of PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE OR WHO HAVE LIVED THERE in the recent future. I know many users who live in various other parts of the city and county have their own opinions of the area, but I would like a first-hand account of what I may be getting myself into. Any areas of the neighborhood that are better than others? Any decent bars/restaurants?

A little background info, we are three males in our 20's looking to grab a 3br place. Are looking at a place on Wash. Blvd near W. Cross, and another place a block south of Cross on Carroll.

I have never lived there, but I know many people who have, and have covered many stories in that neighborhood.

There isn't an underperforming neighborhood in Baltimore with better location than Pigtown. Near downtown, stadiums, inner harbor, Federal Hill, Ridgely's Delight, UMB, and not very close to any public housing.

With that said, Pigtown is very affordable and pretty safe. You don't get much violent crime, but there are certainly are a lot of drug users. Fed Hill rentals are so insanely expensive right now that it's worth looking over there. There farther East (Closer to Russel St) you are, the better it tends to be. Also when you get to the northern part of the neighborhood, you border Barre Circle and Ridgely's Delight which are both very nice. Avoid the corner of Ostend and Washington Blvd....probably the worst spot in the neighborhood.

Tommy's is a cool bar, and there are a couple good food places on the Main Street section of Washington Blvd... 7-8-900 blocks. A new sports bar is also going in on Hamburg and Ostend, Top Notch it will be called. They are also finishing up several new retail locations, hopefully they'll put a couple bars in there.

But with all that said, you can get to Pickle's/Sliders pretty quickly, as well as very short ride to Fed Hill. The biggest problem with walking over Ostend St to Fed Hill is the sketchy crowd that Paradox gets... which is right in between the two. But very soon the Casino is taking over that area, so it should be cleaned up with massive security around.

A friend who lives there has commented on the drug use and dealing. They have gone to University of Maryland to ask for help.
