BHX-GIB (Gibraltar)
More great news for the airport and another new destination.
14 August 2012 Monarch, the leading scheduled leisure airline, is set to launch flights to Gibraltar for summer 2013. Offering three flights a week from the West Midlands airport, the service will start on 23 March 2013, with tickets now on sale. The flight from Birmingham will depart on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 6.35am, arriving in Gibraltar at 10.30am. The return flight will depart Gibraltar at 11.15am, arriving in Birmingham at 1.10pm. “We are delighted to be introducing what we are sure will be a popular route,” Kevin George, Managing Director of Monarch Airlines said. “We have carried out a lot of research to understand the routes our customers want and we are confident that a service from Birmingham to Gibraltar will meet their demands.” Commenting on the developments, Gibraltar Government Minister of Tourism, Public Transport and the Port, The Hon. Neil Costa, said: "We are delighted that Monarch Airlines has decided to provide a service from the Midlands to Gibraltar and that their decision will bring great commercial opportunity all round." Monarch has also introduced new routes from Birmingham to both Barcelona and Nice this year and expanded the frequency of flights to Malaga, Majorca, Alicante, Faro, Rome, Dalaman, Ibiza and Tenerife. Flights start at £44.99 including taxes and charges and can be booked online at www.monarch.co.uk |

Chicago O'Hare International Airport and the UK’s Birmingham Airport have become “sister airports”.
The pair have formalised their relationship and will work to develop new opportunities. The priority is to reinstate direct flights between the two cities. Members of the executive management teams from the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and Birmingham Airport signed a memorandum of understanding this week, agreeing to work together to strengthen trade, tourism and cultural links. Birmingham Airport is the third largest airport in the UK outside of London and handles nine million passengers annually. O'Hare is the largest airport in the Midwest region, and one of the busiest airports in the world, handling nearly 67 million passengers in 2011. CDA commissioner, Rosemarie Andolino said: “Through promotion, we will enhance business, commerce, trade, tourism and cultural relations between the two cities, and share information and best practices relating to operations, construction, planning, customer service and cost management.” Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s CEO, added: “Birmingham enjoys a special relationship with Chicago as the two cities have been twinned since 1993. Over 350 North American companies, including Microsoft, Motorola and Kraft Foods – which is headquartered in Chicago – provide employment for 60,000 people in the area. “This formal partnership will show industry that we're committed to strengthening links further and pushing for the reinstatement of direct flights between the two cities, which ceased to operate 11 years ago in the wake of 9/11.” |

Lets hope the twinning with Chicago brings more dividends than the MAN twinning with Beijing. very dissapointed that it has lead to nothing so far.
