The total car exports crossed the one lakh mark the following year through 51 car carriers
.

In the first month of the current year, EPL handled about 7,000 cars. During May, it proposes to handle 13,000 cars through seven car carriers.

About 2,800 Nissan Micra cars were exported through Neptune Ace on May 10 and 546 cars through MV Colorado Highway on May 12. Hoegh Oslo will carry 1,500 cars on May 16.

These cars will be sent to various destinations such as Barcelona, Amsterdam, Newcastle and cities in Italy and South Africa.

Talking to The Hindu, EPL Chairman-cum-Managing Director, S. Velumani said: “For the current year, Renault Nissan has promised to export 1.25 lakh cars. Both Ford and Toyota would export about 60,000 cars. We will easily cross the two lakh mark as Nissan has given only a conservative figure.”

For the last few months, cars manufacturers in and around Chennai have started scouting for an alternative port as Chennai Port is bogged down due to its congestion problem. While Chennai Port also offers the same type of parking facilities to car manufacturers, EPL provides parking space for 10,000 cars in its yard and 2,000 at berthing point. Besides, it allows the manufacturers to park cars at least 10 days before the schedule arrival of car carriers.

Many a time, it is easier to reach EPL as there is less congestion on the road compared to Chennai Port, said a General Manager of a leading automobile firm.

Karaikal Port ready to handle passenger ships

Quote:
Karaikal port is set to handle passenger vessels soon.

Ms M. Sathiyavathy, Chief Secretary of Puducherry, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, has cleared the proposal and the papers are now pending with the Puducherry government, in the final stages of clearance.

Once cleared, the Immigration department will set up an office at the port to facilitate the immigration.

Besides vessels from Chennai, the port may also receive cruise ships from Singapore and Malaysia, where there is a large Indian diaspora.

According to Ms Sathiyavathy, this will support the Puducherry government's efforts to promote tourism in the Union Territory.

PILGRIMAGE CENTRES

As there are a lot of pilgrimage centres, such as Thirunallaru, Nagore and Velankanni in and around Karaikal, the government intends to make it a tourism hub. Setting up of immigration office in the port will also enable the crew of cargo ships to step out of the port, says Mr M.L.N. Acharyulu, Executive Director, Marine Infrastructure, Marg Group.

The port recently started handling liquid cargo.

From February, it started handling crude carriers for Chennai Petroleum.

Last month, it handled 4,000-tonne palm oil cargo. The port has built four storage tanks with a total capacity of 18,000 tonnes , at an investment of Rs 25 crore.

Mr Acharyulu says during the current financial year, the port hopes to handle 1.5 lakh tonnes of edible oil.

India Container Volume Down 2.4 Percent

JOC Staff | May 15, 2012 12:07PM GMT
The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story
Ports/Terminals | Container Shipping | India
Hapag-Lloyd reports congestion, yard delays at Jawaharlal Nehru
Container traffic through India’s major ports fell 2.4 percent year-over-year in April, the first month of fiscal 2012-13, according to latest traffic figures released by the Indian Ports Association.

The IPA said the 13 state-owned gateway hubs handled 633,000 20-foot equivalent units compared with 649,000 TEUs in the year-ago month.

Traffic at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), which accounts for almost 60 percent of India’s total container movements, declined to 365,000 TEUs from 369,000 TEUs.

Chennai Port, the second-largest box gateway, moved 126,000 TEUs, down 6 percent from 134,000 TEUs.

Kolkata handled 48,000 TEUs, up from 46,000 TEUs. Tuticorin’s volume dropped to 34,000 TEUs from 39,000 TEUs . Traffic at Cochin decreased to 19,000 TEUs from 24,000 TEUs.

The IPA said total cargo tonnage at major ports fell 6.3 percent in April to 46.4 million tons from 49.5 million tons a year earlier.

Kandla was the top cargo handler with throughput of 6.7 million tons, followed by Nehru, at 5.6 million tons; Mumbai, at 5.5 million tons; Visakhapatnam, at 4.9 million tons; and Chennai, at 4.3 million tons.

Meanwhile, Hapag-Lloyd said it is struggling to move containers via terminals in the Port of Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru) because of port congestion and yard delays.

“As part of the contingency plans to clear the congestion, terminal operators are imposing container loading restrictions on some vessels from Nhava Sheva, if and as necessary. This will unfortunately impact the ability to accommodate all bookings requests for our services from Nhava Sheva,” the German carrier said

Ram Sethu: Will DMK’s shipping channel dream sink?

After a lull of three months, the controversial Sethu Samudram shipping canal project is back on the front-burner for the Centre with an expert committee headed by RK Pachauri ruling out an alternative route for the project in the Indian ocean.

The Centre is in a real fix now.

The previous route for the Rs24,000 crore shipping canal project, called “alignment 6”, on which work was stayed by the Supreme Court, is almost impossible with the Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, the BJP and a lot of others sternly opposing it for archaeological, ecological, economic and faith reasons.

The alternative that the Centre sought to explore was “alignment 4” which is now found to be unviable. What does it do?

If the Centre had sought to buy time by appointing the Pachauri committee to explore the alternative route, on Monday, it sought more time from the Supreme Court to take a decision based on the report. The Court has granted eight weeks.

Does it have the right options to choose from in eight weeks?

Unfortunately not. With an alternative route ruled out, the Centre will have to either decide in favour of “alignment 6” or scrap it. Either way, the Supreme Court will have the final say.

If the Centre decides to move ahead with the project, there will be a groundswell of opposition that will bring Jayalalithaa, the BJP and environmental activists on the one side; and the Congress, the DMK and the CPM on the other.

The Ram Sethu bridge. Image from Wikimedia commons.
Any progress on the project will also have ramifications across the country for reasons of faith. With 2014 at sight, Congress cannot take such a risk. The most practical option for the party will be to leave it to the Court to decide.

For the DMK, it is an image-issue and it will definitely put pressure on the Congress. But being on a very weak wicket; with issues such as 2G, criminal cases against its leaders, and an adverse state government to worry for; it may not be left with considerable blackmail-ammunition.

The Court has also asked the state government to file its response to the committee’s report in eight weeks. Given Jayalalithaa’s unequivocal stand on the issue, one doesn’t need to hazard a guess as to what her stand will be.

Ever since the project was announced, Jayalalithaa’s position has been that “Ram Sethu,” or Adam’s Bridge, through which the project was to be implemented is of “immeasurable, historical and archaeological heritage value.” In fact, she had moved the Supreme Court as early as 2007 asking for the declaration of the structure as a national monument.

She had also written to the Prime Minister, when the Supreme Court asked for the Centre’s stand, asking him to inform the Court that the government of India would take immediate steps to declare the site as a national monument.

A pre-independence idea, the Sethusamudram project, sought to create a shipping channel linking the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Manner between India and Sri Lanka that reportedly would allow large ships to get to the eastern coast of the country from the western coast without having to navigate through Sri Lanka, as they do now.

The proponents of the project said it would save considerable sailing time and bring big vessels close to the Indian shore. The project would dramatically transform the coastal economy of Tamil Nadu with Tuticorin as its nodal port and a string of 13 smaller ports across the state, they said.

The project was launched in 2005 by Manmohan Singh and had undertaken some work that sank about Rs 800 crores when it was stopped by the Supreme Court. The project was completely stalled in 2009 and the Pachauri committee was constituted to study an alternative alignment.

The main contention of the political opponents to the project was on “alignment 6” of the channel because it would cut the “Ram Sethu.” The then UPA-1 government had looked at different alignments and decided in favour of the “alignment-6,” with DMK, then an influential coalition partner, putting considerable pressure.

With an alternative “alignment 4”, also ruled out by experts, the possibility of any progress on the project is really remote.

Interestingly, so far 13 committees have conducted studies on this grand idea. Perhaps there could be a few more.

Coimbatore, Aug 16: V O Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi has handled one per cent more cargo during the last four months compared to the corresponding period of the earlier year.

Disclosing this during the Independence Day address, S. Natarajan, Deputy Chairman of the VOC Port, said the cargo volumes being handled at the port was growing at a steady pace, despite the slowdown.

The port has handled 9.54 million tones in the last four months.

Cargoes handled include thermal and industrial coal, petroleum and oil products, fertiliser and fertiliser raw materials, pulses, raw sugar, edible oil, construction materials and machineries (wind mill accessories).

“The Inner Harbour Development Programme has been taken up on a war footing; we are planning to construct North Cargo Berth II and III, two shallow water berths for handling general cargo, conversion of 8th berth into a container terminal and so on. Mechanisation of the cargo handling work is underway. These projects have been cleared by the Government. On completion of the work, the capacity of the port will reach 61.78 million tones per annum,’’ Natarajan said.
