KUALA LUMPUR: Railwaymen Union of Malaya (RUM) is still not convinced that any private party, including MMC Corp Bhd, can turn around Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB), its president Abdul Razak Md Hassan said.

Business Times had reported that MMC plans to pump in as much as RM1 billion to take control of KTMB's operations, including freight and passenger services.

Abdul Razak said, RUM, comprising 3,600 members, is concerned that the takeover would be another failure by private parties to turn the ailing firm into a profitable entity.

He cited Marak Unggul Sdn Bhd's management takeover (an interim arrangement prior to full privatisation of KTMB, which was eventually abandoned), of the railway operator in 1997, as proof that private companies were incapable of managing the company efficiently.

Renong Bhd owned 50 per cent of Marak Unggul, while DRB-HICOM Bhd had 25 per cent, Bolton Bhd 20 per cent and Jasa Meta Sdn Bhd five per cent.

KTMB was corporatised on August 1 1992 under the Railways Act 1991, and placed under the management of Marak Unggul on August 1 1997.

Marak Unggul's plan to privatise KTMB was rejected by the government in 2001.

Industry observers cited Renong's debts as the reason. Also, Marak Unggul did not inject the RM100 million it said it would into KTMB when it took over.

KTMB has been bleeding red ink since it was corporatised in 1992 due to high operating costs.

It did make a net profit of between RM9 million and RM15 million from 1993 to 1995, before falling into the red again in the following years, until now.

As at 2008, the operator had recorded RM1.45 billion in accumulative net losses.

MMC plans to submit its privatisation proposal for KTMB to the government after Hari Raya. The proposal includes pragmatic financial and business model for KTMB to help it move forward.

RUM believes KTMB can turn around without the help of private parties.

KTMB's new president Datuk Elias Kadir has crafted a three-year turnaround plan, which includes details like cost-cutting, improving efficiency, train delivery time and diversifying its revenue stream.
From what I noticed, the turnaround plans for KTMB always failed because of confrontation and resistance from within KTMB itself. But when you're running a real company for profit, most of the time, the unfortunate but necessary step to be had always include the cost cutting part. Mostly the HR 'resource actions', trimming the weeds so to speak.

Why can't they just let KTMB goes bust, put it into administration then sold of the rump org to a private company. Then they can start again and have a real train operating company with real staffs that don't swear or give murderous looks to their paying customer.

For a split moment, the word Jumaat made me see "KL Sentral ke Tumpat", and was somehow astonished, before reading it again to realise my mistake...

Two KTM coaches carrying 100 passengers derail

August 18, 2012
The Malaysian Insider

GUA MUSANG, Aug 18 — It was a harrowing experience for about 100 passengers inside two Ekspres Wau train coaches that derailed at Kampung Sungai Yu, Merapoh near Kuala Lipis, Pahang, at 6.45pm today.

Kuala Lipis police chief Supt Abdul Razak Hasan said the two coaches were part of a 14-coach train heading to Tumpat from Kuala Lumpur when they derailed and broke away about 11km after leaving the Merapoh station at 6.30am.

He said the train was carrying more than 900 passengers who were returning to their respective villages to celebrate Aidilfitri.

“The three victims who were seriously injured and eight who sustained light injuries have been sent to Gua Musang Hospital,” he said.

Nor Atikah Zakari, 21, who escaped unhurt, said most of the passengers were fast asleep while she and a few others were still awake at the time.

“The train suddenly started shaking and we were flung about helplessly causing us to scream in fear. We landed on top of each other and managed to crawl out through the broken glass door,” she recalled.

Another passenger, Nor Hazliza Mohd Noor, 22, said she was also awake at the time and heard a deafening sound before the coaches derailed.

“I shouted for help and tried to get out but the door was closed. Then a man came and smashed the glass door to allow us to escape safely,” she said.

Meanwhile, in Kota Baru, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) said train services from Kuala Lumpur to Kelantan have not been disrupted despite the accident.

A KTMB corporate communication unit spokesperson said repair works would be completed by 7pm today.

“The staff are repairing the track and lifting the derailed coaches off the track,” the spokesperson said when contacted here today. — Bernama

Malaysia, China ink RM400mil train manufacturing agreement
By REGINA LEE Updated: Monday September 24, 2012 MYT 5:07:06 PM

Najib looking at a scale model of Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co.LTD.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is on track to be Asean's manufacturing hub with a Chinese train conglomerate setting up shop here in Perak.

This follows the signing of an agreement between China's largest metro vehicle manufacturer, China Southern Rail Group, and the Transport Ministry for a RM400mil complex in Batu Gajah, Perak.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who witnessed the signing ceremony on Monday, said he was certain the complex would become the catalyst for growth of industries for railway technology in Malaysia.

"I am hopeful that it will be a nerve centre in providing the technical knowhow and transfer of technology to Malaysians while also generating jobs and business opportunities for the local community," he said.

The complex will be operated by CSR Group subsidiary CSR ZhuZhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd.

It is expected to provide 800 jobs and named CSR Rolling Stock Centre (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

CSR Group vice-president Fu Jianguo said the plant is expected to build 100 to 150 new train cars each year and refurbish around 150.

"It will help boost economic growth, create jobs and greatly enhance the capacity of high-end rail equipment manufacturing in Malaysia," he said.

Unhappy

The amount of deals we are making with Chinese companies is starting to worry me. It's not that I have anything against China. I mean, they make everything for the rest of the world. But it seems to me that we are not demanding more from them, and are receiving poorly made goods. I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I find that the new SCS Komuters are poorly built.

If we are to make deals and buy products from China, we must get the best bang for the buck and not just a quick-fix solution to a problem that will continue to trouble us in the future.
