A central Christchurch building will be demolished by implosion next month. The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has approved the implosion of the 14-storey Radio Network House building in Worcester St. The building was deemed unsafe after the February 2011 earthquake. Workers have started removing cladding from the southern façade of the building. This will be the first demolition by implosion in the city since the quake demolitions began. It will take place on Sunday, August 5. More details on how the implosion will be carried out will be released tomorrow morning.

Agreed - can't say it excites me much at all. I'm much more keen on seeing 14 storey buildings being built, not destroyed.

I see where "The Sperminator" is running the implosion project.

I don't think I would want to shake hands with that guy.

Yeah. I'll be sad to see the Radio Network House go but still.
It is the city's first implosion.

Orion's heritage building demolition begins

Christchurch Earthquake 2011 Housing Minister invited to see 'crisis' No critical damage to CTV from 2010 quake Documents for CTV fitout lost Brownlee loses patience with insurance companies $700k to restore Jubilee Clock Tower Injunction could stop implosion Review of 'draconian' quake laws 'overdue' Soil under CTV was 'soft' - engineer Auction to push detonation button exceeds $15K Singapore's expat Kiwis warm Chch families
Another heritage building is set to disappear from Christchurch as work begins to pull down Orion's two buildings on Manchester St. The administration buildings owned by Orion are to be demolished after major damage caused by the earthquakes. The electricity network firm has not used the buildings since February 2011.

Both buildings are at 218 Manchester St, the west end of Orion's central city site, and were used as offices for the company's 150 employees. The buildings, at the west end of Orion's site, appeared on the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority's demolition list last December. One of the buildings, located at the corner of Manchester St and Armagh St, was built in 1939 and had a Historic Places Trust category II heritage classification. Orion chief executive officer Rob Jamieson said in April while they would have liked to save the buildings, safety and risks were the key factors in the decision to demolish. "We believe the cost of trying to fix the buildings would be too high when we still have much work to do to repair Christchurch's electricity network. Independent engineering assessments have shown that it's uneconomic to repair either building, and the demolitions have been approved by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority."

Orion workers moved out of the buildings immediately after last year's February 22 earthquake and have worked from a temporary back up site around the corner in Armagh St ever since. Jamieson also said any further quake damage could endanger the company's backup Armagh St site. "The proximity of the damaged buildings to our back up site is a risk that we need to mitigate. If we don't demolish them they could interfere with our ability to keep the power on, and that's unacceptable to us."

Newstalk ZB building. This block is going to become part of the Frame. Apparently we are going to see landscaping taking place on this site as soon as they remove the rubble. Meant to be complete by Christmas.

Christ...

...this is all so nasty.

A flattened city. And what are we left with? That nasty Soviet-looking thing with little windows. Ugh.

Does anyone have the official logic as to why there's now a height restriction? Is Christchurch any more dangerous than LA or San Francisco to build upon?

Hi there everyone, and especially Milan!

I travelled through Christchurch a couple of days ago, for the first time.

My god.

I don't think people realise just how destructive the quake was.

I know I didn't. I had a good walk around the CBD (where possible).

In any case, my thoughts go out to everyone living in Christchurch, what a difficult and emotional time you must have all had.

Nate.

The implosion contractor sure did hose everyone down there. They charged 20X the going rate for a similar building anywhere else in the world and there was nothing around this building to damage.
They wer bragging about it in a meeting today.
