Nice photos.

The tank itself definitely needs a proper upgrade.

The Telephone Exchange extension with the sloping roof needs to be given notice and demolished.

Hidco ropes in 12 artists to beautify New Town
Somdatta Basu, TNN | Aug 19, 2012, 03.15AM IST

KOLKATA: Imagine sculptures carved by artists like Samir Aich, Bhabotosh Sutar or Bimal Kundu greeting you at every crossing while driving down the New Town roads. If everything goes the way Hidco wants, your imagination will soon turn into a reality. Plans are afoot to adorn 12 islands in New Town with the sculptures of some brilliant sculptors of modern Bengal.

Apart from Aich, Sutar and Kundu, invitations have been sent to the likes of Tarun De, Tarak Ghorai, Akhil Chandra Das, Sunil Das and Gopinath Roy to install their sculptures at the islands of the township.

In the Kolkata Wikipedia page there's a nice picture of Salt Lake stadium, but no picture of the renovated Eden Gardens. Request to upload a recent Eden Gardens picture taken at night, if somebody owns one - will be a good addition to the page I guess.

Thanx everyone, the maintenance of B.B.D Bagh area is not worth of a heritage site. At many places pavements are broken, litters are there and overall cleanliness needs to be improved. Laldighi is also not in very good maintenance, with wild bushes growing everywhere. It's high time, govt. concretized the banks and designed it like Parnashree lake.

They need to bring in experts. It will need caliber more than the caliber of politicians with design hobbies that result in utterly unaesthetic, incongruous and laughable idiocies. The "golakar" lights in the field opposite Writers Building are absolute misfit there. The underground parking lot is too. The substandard architects could have made it a bit better.

When we see north and south block, rajpath, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the parliament, doesn't that give us a sense of pride and belonging to our country? (Designed by the British, too) Well, the imposing structures are not just structures. They have a symbolic value as well. Are there any trees that obstruct the views of there, and hide the elegant buildings behind them?

We need bold decisions like that all around Lal Dighi. The entire square is full of history that had repercussions on the entire subcontinent -- it all started right here. Singapore was governed from Kolkata till 1867. When Sirajuddaula attacked the British in 1756, his horses came as far as the current townhall. Ice from Boston would come in boxes to great eastern hotel. The rundown building beside great eastern was an Italian hotel of repute. Just to mention a few.

This is how Dalhousie Square looked like at one time in the past. Now, the trees obstruct the structures and unnecessary little "creativities" clutter the place.

Well what's the point in bringing in experts when you have an in-house expert on pretty much everything under the Sun?
