HAMBURG | Major Urban Projects (apart from the HafenCity)

I guess if people think of urban projects in Hamburg they can only mention the Hafen-City or none at all. This thread will be about other major urban projects which are overshined by the Hafen City, but which are more or less not minor important or interesting.
To give a quik overview over upcomming events. All updates will refer if possible to this map.
What you should know further: I am dyslexia. You will find tons of errors in my writing. Sorry for that.
Have fun and of course visit my city

Today I start with a project of the suburb Altona, which is located in the middle-west of Hamburg.
The project is named not very creative:

find me on a map here
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...65&postcount=1

In Altona a big old mostly out of use Train station area destroys a huge part of this location and will be filled up with buildings. Here you have an overview over this area:

source Abendblatt.de

And a wooden model from an infocenter

some visiualations from the
ppp-architekten.de

Start is 2013. Usage will be the classical Living/Shopping/Office. I cant whait to see this project starting. The area is damn ugly.

stay tuned

Today I introduce 3 projects. And sorry for my writing, I am dyslexic.
The first for today is the "pearl necklace"

find me on a map here
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...65&postcount=1

it is located in the west of Hamburg and is mostly a living and office project (not shopping). The waterfront of Hamburg was long
time dominated by old and rusty factory or storage halls. With the necklace project this halls will be more and more replaced by
modern living and office buildings.
Thanks to bing-maps you can enjoy a birdsview of this area with some further informations

This is the western entrance. The fish auction hall is on the left. The highrise in the middle is the currenty compleated "Kristall" living
tower. It is located in the middle between auction hall and the docklands.

when you walk further you reach the docklands building

and you can climb to the roof.
from the roof we see the east part of the necklace where the cruiser terminal and the fishmarket are.

When you look to the east you have a chance to gain an impression how things have been bevore this project. Take a look over this
grey storage hall beauty to the right

which will be hopefullly replaced with this soon

pictures: competitiononline.de

moving more to the east more buildings are compleated

and finally on the rooftop of the Elbwarte we look back to the eastern entrance to the necklace

Of course: If someone sees here a "pearl necklace" he should immedeatly wash his eyes. Most concepts are rather boxy and boring,
but renember the picture of the storage hall. Everything can be a peral compared to a rusty factory welcome, if you visit Hamburg by
ship(despite rusty factories may have some charme, too)

......................................................................................................
Next one for today is the Opernboulevard

find me on a map here
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...65&postcount=1

The currently not so nice street "Dammtorstraße" in Hamburg downtown gets a full surgery. Most of it will be private investments, the
city only reanimate the street. If everything will run fine a dead and boring street will become a friendly moderate-busy boulevard with a
bus line in the middle.

picturs: bid-opernboulevard.de
For now this street is far away to be like that, because it is now a construction yard

.............................................................

And last but not least there is project which is not on the big overview map. You cannot mark a specific area here, because it is spread
out all over the city. I name it the Phoenix-project.

Today you find in Hamburg serous wounds from the 4 major desasters during short times.
The first was a big fire in 1842 which destroyed the entire city. After it was nearly rebuild it was destroyed again during the Gomorrah
Attacks in WWII leaving 900.000 Hamburgers homeless. Some bulings were rebuilded but mostly the result was fast and cheap. The thrid
desaster was a stormflood in 1962, leaving again several thousands homless and some quartes were destroyed a third time. After the last
desaster many people left Hamburg and the popolation dropped from nearly 1.9 million to 1.5. Because of this exodus there was not need
to build attractive living space and so the forth desaster took place. German 60ies and 70ies city planners did their best tu ruin Hamburg
and make it more and more antiurban. As a result you find big holes oll over the city and sometimes you have to stop and look at a
building a second time thinking WTF???

how badly those city planing violated or raped Hamburg you can see here: The "chilehaus" is one of the most famous and beuatiful
buildings in Hamburg:

pic wikipedia

it is flanked by this!

pic qype.de

Nothing! Except 5 or 6 buildings in the Deichtstraße near the Hafencity surived all 4 desasters all over Hamburg.

So what will be done?
In the late 90ies suddenly the exodus stopped and people began to return to Hamburg. Hamburg is close to 1.8 million again and wants
to aim for the 2.0 million. The problem is, that nobody wants to live in this ugly60ies and 70ies crap and so the more beautifull and
rubuilded areas are totally overruned and the rents are uneffordable for most people. So something has to change.
demolishing old shit and replace it with better. So finally Hamburg rises after Fire, bombings, flood and city planing a forth time from the
ashes (In Hamburg town hall you find because of the first three desasters a phoenix-hall overlooked by a wooden phoenix)

picture: www.ak-ansichtskarten.de

The demolishion of the four ugly grey buildings next to the chilehaus is maybe one of the bigger parts of this phoenix-project, but despite
demolishion is planned there are no concepts for a new building yet. So I want to start with a typical part of this. In the north east you
can find some big wounds from bombing. I marked them on this bing-map

what rises in this area are buildings looking like this (middle) (in the front you can still see the "wounds")

and this (south)

this are maybe small peanuts, but it makes me really happy to see them rise all over the city. They connect very nice 19th style with
modern style in Hamburg and making my home city finally a livible place.

Fantastic thread, Shisha! Great job

I'm excited to see more of Hamburg's major projects. Sadly we don't get to hear a lot of them, not even by the Hamburg media.

PS: I edited the thread title so it should be more clear what this thread is about.

Hmm, these buildings aren't exactly something to write home about either...

Needs more of the stuff we can see in Berlin.

Definitely, though there are some truly high class classical projects in Hamburg.

JiJa: I'd prefer if you would put less information in one post. 1 project per post should be enough really. It looks so crammed otherwise and people lose on overview here.

Otherwise a really neat presentation there

Good day. Today I like to introduce the suburb "Barmbek". It is a neighbourhood with a
high unemployment rate and low income area. Live quality in this suburb was descreasing
over the last decades. Shops went bankrupt, houses rot. To stop this downfall and increase living quality Hamburg launched some major living and office projects as you can see in the picture below.
To find out where this stuff is located in Hamburg check out the map shown in my opening comment and search for Number "11"

new highrises for Wandsbek propably

In the district Wandsbek, which obtains approx. 410 000 people, is also a debate going on about several highrises, especially two "gate towers" with 14 floors each for the new market - place.

Great thread, keep going Hamburgers!

I'm very curious about the Chicago Square state of plans. Anything materializing already?

What about the Living Bridge?

Linking to Hamburger Abendblatt is not good. You need a pay-account to read articles.
if you want to read the artice (in german) you can cheat by typing in google picture search
"wandsbek neue hochhäuser" and klick on the first picture.

"Wandseker Tor" is an old project and it is quite dead. It is one of these projects, that were kicked by the Hafen-City office space overkill. Hamburg has far too much office space so nobody wants to rent those buildings in Wandsbek. Only chance to get them build is, when the companies realisze, that they gain nothing from paying overpriced rents in the Hafen City and want to move to modern attractive Office Space somewhere else. In that case Wandsbek Market Square with Europes larges Bus-junction is a powerfull location.

Living bridge is close to impossible but not totally dead, yet.

Chicago Square will be build, but no one knows how it will look like

No need @all. Just insert mobil. between www. and abenblatt.de....

Thanks. Now I see the date of release of this article (19.08.2012). Bad journalism. It is all dead and cold coffee in there. No need to focus in future on this project. There is enough other U/C going on in Hamburg
