The city's Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) and suburban rail network have joined Metropolitan Transport Corporation and transport utilities in 500 cities across the world whose routes and timings are available on Google Maps for Android phones. The integrated data on buses and trains makes the application a comprehensive guide for commuters in the city.

Google Maps has public transportation schedules for more than one million transit stops worldwide, in nearly 500 cities, including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney, according to Google's official blog. Chennai's MRTS and suburban train schedules are available on the latest version of Google Maps, an app that allows users to pack every path, every road, rail track, river and sea in the world into less than 20MB of a cellphone's storage space — around the same space needed to store five MP3 songs.

The new facility on Google Maps does not offer real time information on transportation services in Chennai because trains have not installed Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. But the app provides personalised information that should make it a breeze to travel around Chennai by its railroad network — even for complete strangers to Chennai. A user only needs to key in his destination and preferred mode of transport. It offers directions to the closest railway station and departure timings of the trains from that station, the number of halts on the route with their names in a separate drop down box and the time the journey will take.

"We've made some changes to the Transit Lines layer, so you can select a specific mode of public transportation to display on the map while the other modes remain hidden," Google's blog says. "This is helpful in areas where there is a tight concentration of several types of public transit." The app integrates MRTS and suburban rail routes so a user travelling from, say, Chepauk to Pallavaram will be informed that he will have to make a transfer at Chennai Fort where the routes converge.

Experts say the hitch in providing real time information is primarily because transportation utilities are yet to fulfil their promise to equip all buses and trains with GPS devices. Sites like mymetrocommute.in, latlong. com and busroutes.in also stand to benefit from public transport being GPS-enabled. MTC had in 2009 announced that its buses would all soon have GPS devices, but only 550 of the corporation's 3,500 buses now have GPS devices.

Three years ago, Google approached MTC for real time information from their GPS devices. Google was keen to sign a memorandum of understanding with MTC, but the proposal fell through. Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune's transport services are also on Google Maps.
---------------------------------------------
Will the railways and MTC install GPS devices in all Vehicles..Probably can be done within their budget, but surely will change the way they operate..

With the proposed increase in the fare, it was expected that MTCs and TNSTCs will clear the bank debts in a year. But, with the dip in the crowd, has extended it with another year. As usual, the story of SETC is very sad, even in this case.

i guess KSRTC is a tough competitor for SETC for the buses plying for Blore...
Now a days KSRTC buses cover even the tip of TN state (Rameshwaram)... Forget about the people of Kar, even most of the people from TN travelling from Kar also prefer KSRTC as their prime mode of transport...

Its a big time want that SETC buses are maintained well and have to get rid of mootapoochis (bed bugs).... Only then, i guess SETC can atleast open their account ( forget about profit as of now)

You are correct! I'm a frequent traveller between Chennai & Bangalore. I opt only for KSRTC due to cleanliness & bus maintainence. SETC is nowhere close to KSRTC. Feeling bad to say this statement

I remember how SETC used to get support here for having lower fares, let them now reap the fruits of their skewed policies. I really hope everyone avoids their crappy buses and services and force them to improve.
Their UD bases are in horrible shape with broken and smelly seats. its a crime to be charged full fare for partial facilities.

The key things to improve UD buses

1. Wash them everyday
2. Spray deodorant and place new seat covers made of paper
3. Fumigate once a month and change curtains
4. Driver should keep both doors (main entry door plus door behind conductor seat locked at all times). I have travelled couple of times and buses were driven all the way wit these 2 dooors open. Lots of noise and dust were entering bus
5. Stop at decent motels enroute and not where they get comission

No need to feel bad... If you go to Shantinagar bus stand, you will find huge crowd near rajahamsa and Airavat boarding areas (mostly IT crowd) while TN buses will be forlorn with only 8-10 seats occupied (mostly by rural people or those who could not get ticket in KSRTC). Key reason is 'dabba' buses.

Also the KSRTC busses take the Chithor route most of the times which has less of interruptions. While SETC uses the usual Hosur, Krshnagiri, Vellore, Sriperambudhur, Chennai route. They stop in these places quite regularly. Sometimes when you travel in the day, it is wiser to just go to Hosur and catch the 11 am volvo if you dont get KSRTC bus.

TN is driven by age old devices and the standards of excellence are not given priority. Just need for the hour. Somehow to dump passengers from one point to another instead of providing comfort. They'd even have people standing in the busses for quite some distance. Where is the old state transport law that suggests standing passengers are not allowed in long distance busses. They even have the number of seats written in the front of the bus indicating this such as 48+1+1 (meaning 1 for conductor and one for driver).

Hhmm driving back to MTC buses....

Unlike SETC, MTC buses are better and can be compared with its counterparts Blore city buses, Hyd city buses, Mum city buses etc....

IMO, though BMTC has lots of Volvos and introduces new equipment handling buses like eco friendly, battery operated etc, in terms of maintenance they suck too.... I guess MTC is cost effective for some reasons...

I strongly disagree... BMTCs are way better than MTCs. BMTCs are much cleaner & well maintained. You can't find any pan marks on the windows or any kind of posters inside the vehicle. The seats are well maintained & can't see any torn seats even in a 4yr old vehicles whilst in MTCs most of the auto doors aren't functioning (many tied with jute threads) & the seats are so untidy & torn! I'm working in Bangalore since 4 yrs & I've hardly seen bus breakdowns whilst in Chennai you can see MTC broken down & halted in most of the roads.

After the new fares I don't see any big difference in BMTC & MTC

Thank you venki for ur comments I am basically from bangalore ( born and brought up) although my roots are from chennai... I keep coming chennai once in 2 months.. I may have mistaken due to my limited knowledge on mtc... Because most of the time i prefer emu for commutation and whenever i took MTC buses for koyambedu, i was fortunate enough to get new buses...

On the other hand one point, i would disagree in ur perception on BMTC bus maintenance... When u compare with the fare prices in BMTC buses, the maintenance is not upto the mark and one may feel it isn't cost effective... Also for the fact that volvo buses were introduced in blore long back, those buses have become ages old and the pollution caused by these buses seem to be enormous (also noise making)... But BMTC strongly scores in Bus depot maintenance....

Dear Friends..It is always sad while we discuss about the pathetic condition..I came across the details of MTC grievance cell numbers..This was taken from Chennai City Traffic Police FACEBOOK PAGE..
----------------
You can lodge complaints and suggestions to GRIEVANCE CELL, Metropolitan Transport Corporation Limited over the cell phone number 9383337639 round the clock. Complaints may also be lodged to the Wireless Control Room using Telephone Numbers 23455858, 23455859 or 23455801 - Extension - 239 between 10.00 hrs. to 17.45 hrs.
----------------
Why shall not we give a call and make our complaints regularly..atleast at some point of time there will be an action from them.. Requesting the Sincere citizens to do this..
And to my expectation there will be many such members around us..

Bytheway CCTP is doing an excellent job with Facebook...
