The weather has been amazing this weekend! It should be staying decent throughout the week but it's slowly cooling down again by next weekend.

Ive just come back from Phuket, was there for 2 weeks. I have done a fair bit of holidaying in the last 10 months (USA/Canada for 6 weeks, UK x 2, Dubai, South Korea and Thailand). I think I will concentrate some holidays in Australia for the next 12 months. I still haven't been to Tasmania or WA yet.

How on earth does she find it cold here...
Though its the same for my girlfriend, lived in England her whole life and she freezes here, its really strange

Honestly, I think people just put it on as a way to demonstrate their country isn't as cold as everyone makes out.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I think it's often a different kind of cold.

Well my girlfriend was actually genuinely finding it cold. We travelled to Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne then back to Townsville.

You wouldn't be the first to say that.

For anyone interested, this is what an official invitation to Russia for a private visa looks like:

I've removed my & my girlfriends names & passport details.

I grew up in the UK and I find it cold here. My reasoning is that we don't dress properly for the weather here and it is difficult to. In the UK I would wear multiple layers and have a thick jacket, gloves, scarf and be warm, but here I wear a T-shirt, Jumper and a thin(ish) jacket, anything thicker and you get too warm, especially when the sun comes out (no risk of that in the UK winter). I don't want to dress for a UK winter and then have to take off my thick coat and walk around with it. As Joelby says, it is a different cold.

Also houses in Sydney are not really built for winters. Who wants to walk on cold wooden floors, where is the double glazing and the central heating?! People go without these as you only need it for maybe 3-4 months of the year. So they crank up the reverse cycling A/C and other heaters and the whinge about energy bills .... which is another thread altogether.

Couldn't agree more with everything you have said above. Aus jus isn't set up for the cold, and vice versa it's why it always seems so hot when it's over 20 in the UK. House gets so warm in the summer, can't even sleep!

I think you get accustomed to tempurature, its all relative.

I arrived in Vancouver in winter when it was 4 degress, coming from a 36 degree day in Perth . Even with a hoody I was shivering uncontrollably on the skytrain into town.

5 weeks later I took the same train in reverse wearing a tshirt... and i was fine. -17 up in the Rockies made Vancouver feel warm.

Go figure.

You do quick. I spent about 2 weeks in 35 degree up to 50 degree days in the desert around southwest USA but I was freezing in San Francisco during their heatwave when it was 24 degrees.

Tell me about it! It gets seriously hot in English houses
and The Tube in summer, HOLY SHIT! its beyond a joke

But as everyone said, you do get use to it very quickly
I was sometimes wearing shorts during winter, though when it started snowing
thermals and many layers!

even with a 5 degree temp in Melbourne (which only happens at night / no day light - i.e. if that were the day time temp, hell would literally be freezing over) you still just wouldn't wear just a hoodie.

I've said this for many years - in Vic at least, all you need is a proper jacket + t-shirt/business shirt - made from wool (mainly) - cashmere or merino blends are the best (blend makes it less expensive) - and you'll stay warm, it'll block the wind (thanks to the blend) and it'll be comfortable to wear in up to 16-17 degrees (no wind chill) as the wool will breathe.

All the bullshit synthetic jackets you see in shops are there for show - oh sorry "fashion" - and not really there for warmth.

I took the same jacket I'd had for 2 years to Chicago the first time in their winter where it was sub-zero + more cos of the wind chill and I was fine, only extra thing needed was gloves (and they sell them for a "dime a dozen" in northern-continental USA).

Well I'm baaaaaaack! Anyone miss me? No? Oh well.
I had an amazing time in Spain. Without question Madrid blew my mind with its stunning grand architecture. I really didn't expect it at all.
Fell in love whilst there too. That's bound to help
Now....how do you pull a Spaniard away from such a stunning city to come live here in little old Melbourne...?

The question is, did you live up to your name?
