Agumbe ghat road to be widened: Poojary

Quote:
This will facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles between Udupi and Shimoga

Kota Srinivas Poojary, Minister for Ports and Muzrai, said on Tuesday that a proposal had been submitted to the State Government to widen the Agumbe ghat road which connected Udupi with Shimoga at a cost of Rs. 34.2 crore.

He told presspersons after the tri-monthly district-level Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting here that Rs. 21 crore was required to widen the roads in the ghat section coming under the Udupi district while Rs. 11 crore was needed to widen the roads in the ghats falling under the limits of Shimoga district.

But the widening of this road would require acquisition of forestland. Hence the Department of Public Works and the Department of Forests had been given the joint responsibility to study the issue of land acquisition.

The Agumbe ghat road, which has 14 hairpin bends or curves, allowed the movement of light vehicles at present. The widening of the road would facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles between Udupi and Shimoga.

The Department of Animal Husbandry would begin animal census work from September 19. Since there was staff shortage in the department, the personnel from other departments would be deployed for the work. As many as 3,650 calves in the district would be vaccinated for foot-and-mouth disease.

The district had been given a target of providing 10,000 houses under the Basava Indira Vasati Yojane. Nearly 2,000 homes had been built under the Yojane. The administration had identified 126.88 acres of land for providing sites in rural areas. As many as 228 sites had been distributed.

It had been decided to provide land to the poor people in areas close to where they were living. A committee comprising the tahsildars, Executive Officers of taluk panchayats, and Assistant Commissioner had been formed for this purpose and it would give its report in a month, Mr. Poojary said.

The Government had released Rs. 5.23 crore for construction of roads under the Chief Minister’s Rural Road Development Scheme. About Rs. 6.15 crore had been released for the construction of rural roads under the Third Finance Commission scheme.

The Government had released Rs. 34.2 crore for rural drinking water supply to the district, he added.

Mr. Poojary said he had directed officials to provide LPG gas connections to 14 anganwadis in Kundapur taluk, which did not have them. The felling of trees had disrupted power connection to 700 families living in villages in Jadkal-Mudur area in Kundapur taluk. Power supply to these villages would be restored in 10 days.

The loss due to rains in the district had been scaled down from Rs. 20 crore to Rs. 12 crore. Nearly 148 km of roads belonging to the Fisheries Department would be repaired at a cost of Rs. 1.57 crore. As many as 260 houses would be provided to fishermen in the district, Mr. Poojary said.

MLAs Raghupati Bhat and Lakshminarayana, Deputy Commissioner M.T. Reju, Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah, and Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat Prabhakar Sharma were present.

Shimoga set to host SZ T20

Quote:
Shimoga, which boasts of at least five high quality grounds in and around the city, is all set to host the South Zone T20 tournament in March next. A proposal regarding this has been forwarded by the Karnataka State Cricket Association to the BCCI whose approval is expected to be a mere formality.

Karnataka hosted the South Zone one-day tournament early this year in Bangalore and had shown interest in conducting the T20 tournament, from where the top two teams qualify for the all-India tournament for the Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The District headquarter, which successfully hosted a Ranji match against Uttar Pradesh early this year at the JNEC ground, will have two KSCA-owned venues operating soon near here in Navale. Besides, there is also a ground at Bhadravati, just 15 kms away from Shimoga and one maintained by PES.

In fact, the JNEC had received high praise from the BCCI-appointed match referee for its facilities. The KSCA has also signed a 10-year memorandum of understanding with the JNCE to maintain the ground.

In their effort to take the game to mofussil areas, KSCA is also mulling to host two Ranji Trophy matches outside of Bangalore this time. Mysore and Hubli are the front runners to get those matches.

Mysore already has the RC-KSCA Academy running at newly-built facilities at Gangothri Glades where the pavilion is also coming up while 90 per cent of pavilion work is complete at Hubli.

Government not to divide Shimoga: Eshwarappa

Quote:
Talks about proposal on dividing the Shimoga district being submitted to government is baseless, said Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa on Wednesday.
Addressing a gathering after unfurling the tricolour as part of the 66th Independence Day celebrations at the Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday, he said that the issue has been created only to confuse the people.
No such proposal has been submitted before the government, he said and added that the people of Sagar and Shikaripur taluks need not worry about the issue.
“We should understand that freedom is not arbitrariness. The freedom which was earned by our ancestors should be protected. We must uphold social justice, equality and religious tolerance,” Eswarappa added.
In the last four years, the government has taken up several special programmes, including agriculture, irrigation, rural, education and healthcare development works to empower the socio-economically backward classes of the society. Despite the economic crisis in the world, the financial condition of the state is satisfactory, he claimed.
In order to help the people during drought, the government announced 149 taluks as drought-hit and provided relief funds. Farmers loan up to Rs 25,000 has been waived off and due to this more than six lakh ryots have benefitted, he said.
Regarding the district, Eshwarappa said the slum dwellers are being given the title deeds in the city. Hundreds of crores of rupees have been invested in the district to repair, renovate and construct schools, toilets, tourist places, roads, provide drinking water, jobs to the people under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and houses under Ashraya Scheme, Basava, Indira Awaz schemes, the minister added.
The government has approved the Tunga lift irrigation project to be implemented at a cost of `71.33 crore which would feed more than 16,000 acres of land.
Final approval has been given to set up horticulture and agriculture universities in the district. Shimoga city would be upgraded as city corporation soon, he said.

Shimoga to get cold storage

Hopefully a Boon for our Farmers..!

Quote:
A cold storage unit is likely to come up in Shimoga district in the next six months. The unit would benefit farmers who are suffering losses due to lack of cold storage facility in the region.
The `5 crore worth cold storage unit will come up on an eight acres land at Urgadur village, six kilometres from Shimoga. It will be maintained by the Horticulture Department and funded by state and central governments.
“The modalities and the capacity of the unit has not yet been laid out. However, this will be a boon for the farmer of the district and it will be multipurpose storage unit which will provide space for storage, packing and grading of fruits,” Dr M Vishwanath, deputy director of Department of Horticulture, Shimoga said.
It is estimated that around 800 tonnes of ripe fruit and flower rot due to lack of storage facility. With the aim of promoting floriculture in the district this facility is being setup, Viswanath added.
The grading system in the proposed unit would also help growers to separate high quality products for export purposes and it would help in promoting export of flowers and fruits, including banana, sapota, mango and pineapple in huge quantities in the district.
“As I incurred losses due to lack of cold storage facility, I have stopped cultivating vegetables and started growing coconut, areca nut and cinnamon which are less dependent on cold storage. But, it is the need of the hour as it will benefit small farmers to market their produce at higher rates,” said Devangi R Prafulchandra of Hosahalli village in Shimoga district.

KSRTC to shift bus services to new terminal

Quote:
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will soon shift bus services from the old bus-stand in the city to the hi-tech bus terminal at Channapatna. This is to facilitate construction of a commercial complex on the old bus-stand premises, which is expected to start in September.

Except city services, all buses will operate from the new bus terminal, KSRTC officials informed public at a meeting convened here on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner K.P. Mohan Raj had convened the meeting of representatives of several citizens’ forums in view of the KSRTC’s proposal to construct the commercial complex.

Two-floor complex

The officials said work on the commercial complex would begin on September 10. The bus services would be shifted to the new terminal before that. The two-floor complex would have parking facility for two-wheelers and four-wheelers apart from space for shops. The project, estimated to cost Rs. 25 crore, would be completed in two years.

Citizens’ representatives consented to the KSRTC’s proposal with a rider — 75 per cent of the space on the old bus-stand premises should be reserved for operating bus services and the complex could come up on the remaining land.

H.S Prakash, MLA, Amit Singh, Superintendent of Police, and Santosh Kumar Shetty, KSRTC Divisional Controller, were present.

Opposition in handing out College Forestry at Ponnampet from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Bangalore to the UAS Shimoga

Let them Protest, for they are Wasting their TIME..!! It is bound to Happen One Day..!!
SHIMOGA will surely become a Center of Central KARNATAKA..!! GOD Bless..!!

Quote:
The Kodagu wing of JD(S) has opposed the handing over of the management of the College of Forestry at Ponnampet in Kodagu from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Bangalore to the UAS in Shimoga.

The change in management will lead to delay in transactions as the college is more close to Bangalore than Shimoga. As of now, the college is benefiting immensely by being under UAS, Bangalore, and this should not change, they argue.

District JD(S) legal cell president M T Cariappa and Virajpet taluk JD(S) leader Kolera Daya Chengappa have opposed the proposal and have threatened to agitate if the proposal is not withdrawn.

They have urged Virajpet MLA, Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah to intervene and stop the proposal from progressing. However, when TOI contacted Bopaiah, he explained that the decision to change the management had already been accepted in the legislative houses. The UAS in Shimoga was recently established and forest colleges in Chitradurga, Udupi, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur and Davanagere would come under Shimoga. The bills were passed in both the Houses.

Hassan, however, was not shifted and continues to remain under UAS, Bangalore, since Hassan representatives raised their objections at the right time. Bopaiah added that he was not present when the bill was passed.
Regarding government grants for these colleges, he said the change in management would not have any bearing on it.
