A total of 42 government servants, including 28 personnel attached to the fire service and rescue services department, were honoured at the Independence Day celebrations at Anna Stadium here on Wednesday.
The fire and rescue service personnel were honoured in recognition of their prompt service in dousing the major fire at a private complex in the city. Collector Jayashree Muralidharan presented commendation certificates to the government employees.
Free gold
The Collector also gave away loans, assistances and relief totalling about Rs.15 lakh to 161 beneficiaries. Eight brides got free gold and cash under the marriage assistance scheme, five got old age pension and eight sportspersons got cash awards.
Earlier Ms. Jayashree Muralidharan hoisted the National Flag, and later inspected the guard of honour presented by police personnel, firemen, home guards and NCC cadets. A.Alexander Mohan, IG of Police, Central Zone, Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of Police, A. Amalraj, DIG of Police, Tiruchi Range, R. Lalitha Lakshmi, Superintendent of Police, and M. Certificates
A.Jaya, Mayor, hoisted the National Flag on the corporation premises in the presence of V. T. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner. The Mayor gave away certificates and one gram gold each to 14 wards of corporation employees who secured high marks in the public examinations.
Community feast were held in temples across the district. The Collector participated in the feast at Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy temple. Similar feast was held at Rockfort Sri Thayumanaswamy temple, Sri Uthamar temple, Sri Subramanya temple in Vayalur, and Sri Vekkaliamman temple.

A job fair would be conducted in Srirangam on August 17 and 18 during which TVS and Sons Limited and its subsidiaries would recruit candidates for various positions, said N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for School Education, Youth Welfare and Sports.
The companies would recruit candidates with qualifications of standard VIII, ITI, diploma, gradation and post-graduation to fill up 318 posts. The openings are for various positions, including trainees, technical staff, assistant managers, cashier, engineers, marketing executives, tele-marketing staff and management trainees. Candidates should be in the age group of 18 to 35 and they should appear at the camp along with resume affixed with a passport size photo and certificates.
Candidates with qualifications of SSLC, Plus Two, ITI (diesel and motor mechanic) and those with light motor vehicle driving licence could participate at the camp on August 17. On August 18, candidates with diploma in mechanical engineering and automobile service, BE automobile engineering and those with experience in light and heavy vehicle maintenance could participate.
The camp would be held at Boys Higher Secondary School, Srirangam. P.Thangamani, Industries Minister, would inaugurate the camp, Mr.Sivapathi said in a press release.

The Srirangam temple complex fulfils six out of 10 criteria for declaration as a world heritage site of UNESCO, according to an expert Roopmathi Anand.

The complex, spread over 150 acres, is a masterpiece of human creative genius. It is an exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or a civilisation. Also, it exhibits an important interchange of human values over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world on development in architecture or technology monumental arch and town planning. These are some of the criteria that the temple complex has met, says Ms. Anand.

She goes on to add that the complex is an outstanding example of a type of building, architecture or technological ensemble, which illustrates significant stages in human history. It is directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions with ideas or beliefs with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance besides situated in areas of exceptional natural beauty.

Last week, Ms. Anand, who has been a consultant for several government agencies, made a presentation on the temple complex before the Advisory Committee on World Heritage Matters (ACWHM) attached to the Union Culture Ministry. Having studied several world heritage monuments, Ms. Anand is convinced that the Srirangam temple complex has all qualities to be included in the revised tentative list.

In general, Tamil Nadu deserves to have several sites in the UNESCO list of heritage sites, she says, adding that she has been carrying out in-depth study of the Srirangam temple complex for several years.

List not updated in last 10 years

Steve Borgia, adviser, ACWHM says, “The world heritage list, comprising Indian cities, has never been updated in the last 10 years. Moreover, it did not have any representation from the southern States.

“Hence, we have decided to hold meetings all over the country. We would like to discard the old list and come out with a new set of 30 sites. The new list will be presented at the South Asian Regional Workshop to be held in New Delhi next month and the final list will be ready by December.”

To have good number of participation from all stakeholders, the ACWHM invited representatives from the State government, colleges, trusts, non-governmental organisations, INTACH, the ASI and conservation architects.

“Tamil Nadu was very well represented at the conference. The State also sought the world heritage tag for Fort St. George, which is the first fort to be built outside of England by the British. The recognition should have been given to Fort St. George long ago,” he says.

மேலும் ரயில் விபத்துகள், அதில் மீட்புப் பணிகள் மேற்கொள்ளுதல் உள்ளிட்டவைகளும் மாதிரிகளைக் கொண்டு விளக்கப்பட்டன.

மேலும், 1880-ம் ஆண்டில் பிரசுரிக்கப்பட்ட ரயில்வே பொது விதிகள், 1923-ம் ஆண்டில் பிரசுரமான ரயில்வே கால அட்டவணை, 1948-ம் ஆண்டில் வெளியான தெற்கு ரயில்வே பருவ இதழ், இந்திய ரயில்வேயின் 100-ம் (1853 -1953) ஆண்டையொட்டி வெளியிடப்பட்ட இதழ், நாளிதழ்களில் வெளி வந்த ரயில்வே தொடர்புடைய செய்திகள் உள்ளிட்ட அரிய தொகுப்புகளும் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருந்தன.

இந்த கண்காட்சியில் இடம்பெற்றிருந்த ஏறத்தாழ 3,000-த்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட பொருள்களை தனி நபராக சேகரித்து கண்காட்சியை அமைத்திருந்த அவினாசி ஜலால் கூறியது:

The Trichy corporation conducted eviction drives in two busy areas in the city to remove encroachments made by shops. However, a group of traders from one of the areas shut their shops condemning the drive till afternoon here on Monday. Such eviction drives are typical whenever a new commissioner for the corporation takes charge. After the hype dies down, the situation comes back to normal.

The eviction drive commenced in Central bus stand and Gandhi market areas at around 8.30 am. Anticipating protest from traders, a large posse of policemen were deployed in the areas. Two teams of corporation employees led by assistant commissioners TN Dhanabalan (Golden Rock zone) and Rajammal (Ariyamangalam zone) conducted the drive in central bus stand and Gandhi market areas respectively.

According to the corporation, as many as 50 shops owned by Trichy corporation in central bus stand have been rented out to private parties to run eateries, book stalls and tea shops among others. As per rules, the shops should function within the prescribed area. On the contrary, as many as 29 shops in central bus stand violated rules by extending their shops to the pavement. The violation caused obstruction to the movement of pedestrians. So, the corporation officials evicted the encroachments. Frustrated by the move, the shops in central bus stand shut down claiming they were free to use the areas not meant for pedestrians. Later, they met corporation commissioner VP Thandapani and explained to him their situation.

Likewise, another team conducted an eviction drive in Gandhi market area where they removed encroachments by 25 shops. These shops also encroached upon the road causing disturbance to all. Unlike the traders' protest in central bus stand, the eviction drive went off peacefully in Gandhi market.

Condemning the eviction drive, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Traders Federation, Ve Govindarajalu told TOI, "Whenever a new commissioner assumes office, such eviction drives are conducted. We run the shops according to rules in central bus stand. The pavement way is away from our shops and we have not encroach upon it. But corporation officials go soft on unauthorised shops mushrooming in and around the central bus stand. We demand the commissioner return back our things."

So the entire credit goes to the commissioner which is also noted by the traders too. Its really bad to see people speaking for such encroachments, its very dificult for the buses to move near the places where the drive took place, hope similar drives takes place all over the city.

Aimed at providing training to the employees of various State government departments, its subsidiaries, Central government departments in the State and officials of departments of other States, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday ordered the starting of zonal training centres at Salem, Tiruchy and Madurai. These centres would function under the control of the Director of the Anna Institute of Management.

The move would help the employees get the necessary training in places close to their working spots. They would be given training on general administration, disaster management, information technology, e-Governance, Code of Conduct, Right to Information Act, quality management and personality development.

The CM also directed that seven new posts be created for manning these zonal training centres. The measure would cost an additional expenditure of Rs 2.46 crore to the State Exchequer. Besides, the CM has granted Rs 1.60 crore for improving infrastructure facilities at the Anna Institute of Management in Chennai.

On May 7, the Chief Minister announced that the Civil Service Training Institute at Bhavanisagar would be upgraded with all infrastructure facilities at a cost of Rs 35 crore.

The agenda was the major set back for registration, they made lots of changes to the original document submitted by us, that to after when MP P.Kumar spoke on behalf of us to the registrar. I dont know whats all the changes made.

Positive indications have emerged for the setting up of a police station exclusively for Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, the foremost among the 108 ‘divyadesams’ attracting devotees round the year.

As a follow up to a plan forwarded to it earlier, the State government has now sought a detailed proposal from the Tiruchi City Police with respect to establishment of an exclusive police station for Srirangam temple.

In a recent communication, the government has asked the police to specify infrastructural requirements for the police station, manpower strength, proposed location and other necessary paraphernalia required for the station at the earliest.

Authorities have embarked on the task of drawing up a comprehensive proposal, which would be sent to the government through the State Police Headquarters, police sources said.

If the proposal fructifies, the exclusive Srirangam temple police station would be a full-fledged one and headed by an Inspector.

The station would take care of temple and VIP security, crowd management and prevent offences in the temple premises.

On an average, around 30,000 devotees throng the Srirangam temple every day with the figures doubling on Saturday and Sunday, say sources adding that the number of pilgrims visiting the shrine has increased over the years.

An exclusive temple police station was required given the frequent visits of VIPs to the shrine and rising number of devotees, a senior officer said.

At present, personnel of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad armed with hand-held metal detectors are deployed in shifts at the south, east and north entrances of the temple where multi-zone door frame metal detectors were installed to bolster security.

CHENNAI: The sky over south India is likely to get crowded in coming months. If plans floated by a few new airlines take off on time, travelling time between smaller cities in the peninsula could soon reduce. Most tier-II cities here are not well connected to each other by air despite a large potential clientele, which is thereby forced to rely on roads and railways. But regional airlines are coming up in a big way to bridge the demand-supply gap and a vacuum created by the downsizing of Kingfisher Airlines.

Air Pegasus and Air Costa are gearing up to start services in a couple of months having received a no-objection from the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). They will interconnect tier II cities and connect tier II cities with the nearest metro as well. Under licence rules, regional airlines are allowed to fly to only one metro.

However, in the south, rules have been relaxed by DGCA due to the proximity of the three metros — Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore — and regional airlines will be allowed to fly into more than one metro. "We plan to start operations to 13 destinations, including Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Chennai, Bangalore, Goa and Kochi, by October.

Aircraft will arrive soon and we are finalizing formalities at airports," said Shyson Thomas, managing director of Air Pegasus which was floated by ground-handling company Decor Aviation. "Smaller cities like Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore are not well connected. Air Pegasus will take advantage of this drawback. Aviation is a viable business if daily cost calculation and routine analysis is done," said Thomas.
