It's quite unique due to the monumentalist planning. It's somewhat symetric looking from the Canton Tower which closes the Southern axis. A bit like Paris looking from Eiffel tower. In my opinion it's a masterpiece of contemporary urban planning which is amazing at both street and skyline levels. Other Chinese cities are of course planning similar districts but this one seems to be the first one. Shanghai Lujiazui, for instance, looks stunning as a skyline but it no match to Zhujiang new town once it comes to planning of spaces on the ground level.

![]() Zhujiang new town felt warm and cozy when I was there in 2010, not cold and lonely like Luijiazui. The buildings look like they all came from different eras unlike Dubai where you can tell they were built at the same time. Get a bunch of restaurants, shopping and entertainment at the street level and Zhujiang new town would be perfect. |

![]() This is an indication of how much urban thinking has changed in China in 20 years. Even Lujiazui has been improving lately correcting shortcomings of late 80's-early 90's planning ideas. I'm sure other mega-developments are following the case of Zhujiang new town.
