Lloyd Construction partnered with the City of Tucson and the architect in a Construction Manager at Risk relationship to build a two-story underground garage topped by a new five-story apartment complex, adjacent to a remodel of the existing MLK Apartments, the Ronstadt Transit Center, and the 4th Avenue Underpass projects in downtown Tucson.

Meinel Optical sciences Center at UA

http://magicoftucson.com/2009/07/10/...ty-of-arizona/

Quote:
A major expansion of the Meinel Optical Sciences Center on the UA mall

The expansion features a below grade entry-level plaza, state-of-the-art optical research labs, cleanrooms, teaching labs and classrooms, a new two-story lobby with exhibit space, an expanded reading room, faculty offices, informal discussion areas and conference space. 6,000 SF of the existing building features renovated classrooms and teaching laboratories.

The expansion is a total of seven stories, with five above grade. A two-story lobby is below grade. Each of the five floors above grade is organized with optics labs along the south wall, vertical circulation, discussion and conference spaces in the internal service core, and faculty offices on the north wall.

The design departs from the traditional red brick used on most UA buildings. The architect selected a 32-ounce copper cladding treated to a reddened bronze color meant to recall the color of the red brick.

The new 47,000 SF 7-story project is cast in place concrete and was built from the inside out. The building is built on 98 drilled bell caissons designed to limit building vibration, which can interfere with the delicate scientific work taking place in the optics labs. The piers range in diameter up to 30” and in depth from 13’ to 40’.

Sarver Heart Center

http://www.smithgroup.com/?id=542

Quote:
A new three-story, 45,000 SF heart center. The new facility was built as a vertical addition to the existing three-story College of Medicine and adjacent to the Basic Sciences wing of the Arizona Health Sciences Center.

It was built while the College of Medicine was in session and while the adjacent hospital was in full operation. Scheduling and coordination was critical. For example, all steel columns and beams, some weighing 20,000 pounds, were brought in on trucks and unloaded into the air to make room for the next truck.

College of Architecture & Landscape Architecture Expansion

http://www.fdc.arizona.edu/

Quote:
A major addition to the College of Architecture & Landscape Architecture. The three-story, 33,500 SF addition to the east side of the existing Architecture building provides a centralized location for collaborative architecture and landscape architecture studios, along with expanded studio space. A materials lab was developed on the first floor of the addition to meet the changing demands of the educational program. It was designed using structural steel framing, masonry wainscoting and insulated metal panels as the exterior skin.

Tucson Northwest Medical Center Set For $50 Million Operating Room Expansion

Quote:
A $50M operating room expansion is planned for Tucson’s Northwest Medical Center, 6200 N. La Cholla Blvd. at W. Orange Grove Rd., The new surgical wing accommodates growing demand for procedures. The project will be completed in a series of phases breaking ground this winter and looking at completion within 18-20 months.

A design team and GC have been selected, but are not being disclosed until contract negotiations are completed in the coming weeks.

The new surgical wing extends from the current building into the existing surgery parking area. The expansion allows for future vertical growth when the need arises.

Four additional operating rooms bring the hospital’s total count to 16 suites. All are outfitted for minimally invasive procedures. An increasing number of surgeries fall into this category and the new ORs will better accommodate the technology. New operating rooms average 550 square feet—the existing suites average 400 square feet—allowing greater access for the da Vinci Robotic Surgical Assistant for minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The expansion creates a new integrated hybrid suite, designed specifically for advanced cardiac and vascular surgical procedures. It combines a traditional OR with the advanced imaging systems of a cardiac catheterization lab, affording patients with dual areas of expertise. Patients with blocked arteries can undergo stent procedures performed by a cardiologist and single by-pass grafts performed by a cardiac surgeon in a single procedure.

Along with OR expansion, NMC will renovate one of its Cardiac Catheterization (Cath) Labs for patients not requiring the level of care the hybrid suite offers.

The Level High Rise Dorms Loom Large On The Tucson Skyline

Quote:
The Level, at 14 stories high, will become the sixth-tallest building in Tucson. Campus Acquisitions, plans a 13 story tower to the east. A third tower is planned just west of the site by another development group.

The first building alone is too big and way out of proportion, said architect Bob Vint, who said Tucson is missing opportunities to build at a more reasonable scale along the modern streetcar line.

Campus Acquisitions boasts on its website that its high-rise dorm is “already redefining the Tucson skyline.”

Architect Bob Lanning drew some criticism from friends and colleagues for defending the city’s decision to create the Main Gate Overlay District. He said he, too, is a little shocked by the building’s mass.

But if they actually want a decent amount of people on those streetcars then huge student housing developments like these would be a good thing, no?
