supermarket yata yan hindi mall, pero pwede nila ibahin concept na kagaya ng royal mall kung may budget sila totake advantage of lingayens potential as tourist destination, kung csi man yan, expect the economy of ligayen to become stagnant and deteriorate, mauuwi sa kawalan ang pera ng mga tao at pipigilan pa ng may-ari ang pagunlad ng lugar not to mention baduy at mabaho ang mga malls nila

Fil-Am gymnast Kyla Ross on Olympic gold medal: 'It was all worth it'
Quote:
KARLA MAQUILING August 27, 2012 3:30pm
Fil-Am gymnast Kyla Ross describes her winning of a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics as “thrilling,” “unbelievable,” and “exciting.”

The 15-year-old gymnast helped the US Women’s Gymnastics Team bag the gold for the first time in 16 years at the 2012 Olympics in London.

In an e-mail interview with GMA News Online, Ross said, “I wanted to laugh, cry, and scream all at the same time. It makes you feel everything you’ve ever done—gymnastics wise and personal decisions made—was all worth it.”

Her mother Kiana was born in Hawaii and has German, Filipino, Puerto Rican, and Chinese blood.

Ross' maternal great-grandfather Tano was 16 when he left Pangasinan to work in a sugar plantation in Hawaii. Her great-grandmother came from Cebu. Ross’s father Jason is thus African-American and Japanese.

From her Filipino side of the family, Ross learned hard work and responsibility.

She hopes to come and visit the Philippines one day and see her maternal relatives and her Pinoy fans who have been rooting for her since day one.

“I want to sincerely thank my Filipino fans for their love and support. I hope I can continue to make them feel proud of me,” said Ross, who loves pinakbet and halo-halo.

Preparing for Olympics

Ross, who claims to "love competing," said preparing for the Olympics was no easy task.

“I had to stay focused. I trained 35 hours a week. My coaches, Jenny Zhang and Howie Liang, were very good at pacing me. I’m pretty good at eating healthy and staying away from junk food. My mother cooks nutritious meals so my diet didn’t change,” Ross shared.

Ross' parents have always been very supportive of their children’s athletic interests. Kyla's
brother plays baseball while her sister is a volleyball player. Their parents shuttle them to school and practice.

“Both of my parents work very hard, and I know they have sacrificed a lot of time and money,
but they never complain. I know it’s not easy for them but they always seem to get everything done,” she said.

Her parents and brother, along with her grandparents and aunts from Hawaii, were at the stands cheering for her during the London Olympics.

Back to normal

Coming back home to the US from the Olympics, she has settled back into her routine: gym training and getting ready for school opening in September.

In the last four years that she has been with the USA National Gymnastics Team, Ross managed to attend regular high school while making time for training camps in Houston, Texas, and international assignments.

During her down time, she squeezes in a few hours at night and early in the morning to do her homework. “My teachers give me assignments ahead of time when I need to travel. I have to stay organized, otherwise things can get crazy real fast,” she said.

When not in school or training, Ross spends a lot of time baking and cooking with family. “I have a big extended family on both my mom’s and dad’s side. I love hanging out with them,” she shared. - VVP, GMA News

Calata earnings rise in H1

Quote:
FARM SUPPLIER Calata Corp. last week said earnings for the first semester rose by almost half from a year ago as increased revenues offset higher expenses in the period.

In a filing with the local bourse, the company reported that its net income amounted to P59.22 million in the six-month period, up by 43.36% from the P41.28 million it recorded from January to June last year. Revenues surged by 40.16% to P1.17 billion from the P834.77 million it made in 2011.

The firm said that the improvement in its gross sales, which it noted was a record half-year performance, was mainly due to its expansion to new markets through its retail affiliate Agri Phil Corp.

“The sales through the affiliate stores also earned a higher margin for the company which contributed significantly to the company’s bottom line,” said Calata.

It added that Luzon experienced favorable weather in the period, which improved its farming activities in Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Pangasinan, among others.

“The… stable price of hog and broilers during the first half also encouraged farmers to continuously raise their animals throughout the first half. This contributed to significantly more revenues by the company from feeds for the first half of this year compared to last year,” it furthered.

Broken down, the firm earned P317.21 million from the sales of feed in the period, 65.91% higher than last year’s P191.20 million.

Sales of chemicals, meanwhile, amounted to P316.92 million, which was likewise 54.12% more than the P205.63 million Calata earned for the product in the first semester of 2011.

Revenues from fertilizers similarly rose by 5.39% to P192.19 million. The firm also saw a 76.84% surge in its sales of seeds in the six-month period, with revenues amounting to P10.31 million against last year’s P5.83 million.

Higher sales during the period shielded earnings from increased operating expenses, which Calata said amounted to P34.51 million in the period, up 6.74% from a year ago. The firm attributed the rise in its expenditures to its expansion efforts for its retail arm.

Calata shares rose by 2.22% to P6 apiece on Friday. -- B. F. V. Roc

Pangasinan is 4th Best Performing Province

LINGAYEN—More than just being listed as one of the best performing provincial government as announced last week, Pangasinan is now the fourth top performing province in the country.
Improve its performance as a well-managed local government unit (LGU), Pangasinan climbed from its fifth position to number four in 2011 among the top performing provinces in the country.
Based on a report of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Central News, Pangasinan bagged perfect scores of 5 in both development planning and human resource management and development.
However, no Pangasinan city or municipality rated well in their respective categories, namely “highly urbanized cities”, “component cities” and municipalities.
LGU performances are evaluated by the DILG using the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS) in four aspects, namely: administrative governance, social governance, economic governance, and environmental governance.
The evaluation also covers how the fundamentals of good governance such as participation, transparency, and financial accountability are valued at the LGU level.
Governor Amado Espino Jr. vowed that the provincial government will continuously strive for excellence to attain its mission to be number one, guided by the vision to make Pangasinan “the best place to live, work, invest and raise a family.”
For 2011, the other top performing provincial, city and municipal governments with their corresponding LGPMS rankings are: Provinces- Bohol (4.91); La Union (4.89); Cavite (4.88); Pangasinan (4.87); South Cotabato (4.864); Mountain Province (4.855); Albay (4.839); Bulacan (4.836); Rizal (4.832); and Ilocos Norte (4.828).
The LGPMS topnotchers are automatically nominated in the Gawad Pamana ng Lahi, which is conferred to LGUs that advance the tenets of good governance.

Tsunami warning system operational by September

THE tsunami early warning system (TeWS) in the province is primed for full operation this September.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Research Specialist Angel Lanuza, also the institute’s point person for the TeWS, made the announcement last Thursday as he supervised the construction of the base structure where the tsunami alert receivers and sirens will be mounted.
Lanuza said that with the installation of the tsunami occurrence detection sensors, sirens and receivers next month, the whole system, including the evacuation schemes and other recommended preparations that the affected population have practiced, could be set for test run next month.
The institute’s crew were assisted by staff from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council – Operations Center (CDRRMC-OpsCen) and the City Engineering Office.
The tsunami detector facility, which will automatically feed tsunami occurrence warning signals to the receivers in the city once it senses an earthquake generated by the nearby Manila Trench, is currently being set up in the municipality of Bolinao.
“Though we have the early warning, however, it is still helpful for the communities to adhere to the three traditional tsunami occurrence indicators which are earthquake incidence, the receding shore and the rumbling sound which is the sign of the approaching huge volume of moving water – tsunami,” Lanuza reminded.
The TeWS is funded through a special grant by the institute’s parent bureau Department of Science and Technology.
Since last year, CDRRMC and the institute have jointly conducted a series of trainings to brief the community, city and village government and allied civic stakeholders on the use of the warning system.
Aside from the TeWS, the city will soon construct a P10 million Tsunami Hill in Pugaro as part of its disaster risk reduction initiatives. (CIO)

Climate change forum points to Dagupan’s vulnerabilities
Posted on August 26, 2012 - Filed Under Inside News, News | Leave a Comment
A FORUM-workshop dubbed "Business Risk Assessment and Management of Climate Impacts” sponsored by the Bank of Philippine Islands (BPI) Foundation and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) was held in Dagupan August 23 and discussed the city’s vulnerabilities.
Participants included city government officials and personnel, and stakeholders from various professional, religious, media and business sectors in Dagupan.
WWF Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan said the climate-change phenomenon “changes everything, triggering extreme storms and floods with the humankind as the culprit.”
Citing the haphazardly-built cities in Asia as an aggravating factor, Tan described Dagupan as a booming metropolis but pales in comparison with other cities when it comes to land use and urban management planning.
SOLID GROUND TO WATER
WWF-BPI Project Assistant Joaquin Del Rosario presented studies showing that while Dagupan is relatively isolated from the adverse climate effects, the conversion of solid ground into water is proving to be a major problem.
"This is the reason why more businesses closed shops this year compared with previous years," del Rosario said, citing figures from the One Stop Business Center (OSBC).
Former National Economic and Development Authority Director General Cielito Habito said the worsening environmental reality has been hampering the city’s economic progress.
The forum organizers will return to the city in October to present the outcome of their studies in the city.(CIO)

San Fabian folks thank Pangasinan lady solon for slope protection project

Quote:
SAN FABIAN, Pangasinan — Residents of Barangay Binday here expressed their profuse thanks to Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia for finally acting on their long-time request for the construction of a protective slope and spur dike of the Binday River.
De Venecia, who was here Thursday as guest of honor and speaker during the 11th anniversary of the Pangasinan Council of Women, Inc. (PCWI), San Fabian chapter headed by Mayor Irene Libunao, was told that because of the project, they experienced no flooding and erosion for the first time in many years during the onslaught of enhanced southwest monsoon rains early this month
The protective slope and spur dike of the Binday River, costing P45 million, were completed in June this year.
The residents said that with the project, they can now sleep soundly in their homes every rainy season without fearing that their houses could be eroded into the river.
De Venecia recalled that during the onslaught of Typhoon "Pepeng" in October 2009, at least 50 hectares of fertile farm lands and 29 houses were eroded and eaten away by the angry river.
Noting that the river is getting wider and wider each year, De Venecia consulted with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to undertake measures to stop the erosion and came up with the protective slope and spur dike projects. (PNA)
