Filipinos in Guam welcome Our Lady of Manaoag

OUR LADY of Manaoag in the St. Anthony Church in Guam
While tenor Samuel Acosta of the Powervoice Choir sang Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” the flower-bedecked carroza bearing Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag was borne in a procession to the altar of the Church of St. Anthony in Tamuning, Guam.

Welcoming Our Lady to the altar were Msgr. Brigido Arroyo, parish priest, and Fathers Karl Vila, Rudy Arejola, Mario Ortiz and Val Rodriguez.

The congregation, which included the Federation of Pangasinenses, was moved to tears. In the processional were Philippine Consul Gary Auxilian and Lolita Gagaoin, president of the Pangasinan Ladies Club of Guam.

Everyone was moved. As Fr. Karl Vila said in his homily, “Our Lady of Manaoag is here to stay in St. Anthony de Padua & St. Victor Church. This is her new home.”

Edna Ouano Toral of Mandaue, Cebu, has been donating the three-ft-tall image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag since 1996 to churches after she was healed of complicated ulcers in 1994, a miracle she attributed to the intercession of Our Lady.

She donated the first image to the Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue City in 1996. Since then, she has donated 100 icons to churches in the Visayas and Mindanao.

In 1996, after I wrote about the Mandaue enthronement, Sen. Elizabeth Arriola of Guam wrote Toral and asked for the donation. But the request went unheeded for 16 years. Toral recently had a dream of the Virgin of Manaoag telling her, “Bring me to Guam.”

Fr. Patricio Apa, OP, former parish priest of the Manaoag shrine in Pangasinan, approved the donation.

So I wrote Consul General Bayani Mangibin of Guam if the Philippine community would accept the donation. “Please bring her,” he replied.

Divine intervention

Powervoice Choir of Ilagan, Isabela, came to sing in the Guam celebration. This must have been the result of divine intervention.

Aurora Lazo of SM Lazo Medical Center, and president of the Stewards and Friends Foundation, had offered to bring the choir to Guam at her expense.

But the real miracle was that all 11 choir members were given US visas at short notice: Aljun P. de la Peña, leader of the group; Samuel G. Acosta Jr.; Christopher C. Nuez; Reynaldo A. Laureta; Dominador M. Galasinao Jr.; Alvin Roco B. Miranda; Myke Jordan D. Yasto; Christopher James I. Lugo, bass; Joemarie A. Manalo, organist and musical director; Joanna Marie Paz B. Arcaina; and Michelle S. Miro.

Another miracle was that Al Arriesgado, sculptor of the image, was given his first US visa. I, too, had a difficulty getting a visa, so I prayed to Mama Mary and the saints, so lo and behold, it came in the morning of Aug. 15, feast of the Assumption. Meanwhile, my friend Ali Rich Garcia had his flight confirmed on Aug. 15 by United Airlines.

Our Lady’s seat

For the first time, United Airlines had an image of the Virgin Mary as passenger because Toral paid for her seat. Bobby Hernandez, an airline officer, fixed her seat at the back of the plane carefully covering her with blankets to prevent damage. On the seats beside her were Marco Toral and Dr. Gardenia Larrazabal.

Arrival in Guam

On a wheelchair, Al Arriesgado carried the image on his lap through immigration and out the airport. Consul Auxilian brought the image to the consulate for a one-day stay, so the staff could be blessed.

Auxilian was very happy because he said he could never visit her in Manaoag, but now as fate would have it, she was able to make it to Guam.

We would like to thank the executive officers of the Pangasinan women’s club for making our Guam visit meaningful: Lolita V. Gagaoin, Rosalina Datuin, Bella Marquez, Lily O. Antolin, Jean Hutchison, Analiz B. See, Gloria Guico Rivo, Thelma Barrozo, Lilia A. Basto, Alili May Antolin-Aquino and Nenita Rivo.

Board of directors: Magdalena Acosta, Teresita Callo, Luningning Fernandez, Zeny M. Palisoc, Lyn Caburian, Lydia P. Tangonan, Elizabeth Field, Mercedes Parayno, Clariza Aviles and Chenoa Hutchison.

Also thanks to Tita Nelly Tinsay, a retired nurse; Sr. Lucia Arriola Pablo, a retired discalced Carmelite; Angie Roman and Magnosita Manjares for the despedida breakfast they hosted on the Sunday we left Guam.

Innovative water supply project solves woes of remote Northern Luzon barangay

Quote:
September 1, 2012 at 10:20 pm Leave a comment

“A WATERLESS locality” ever since, remote and upland Barangay Uli of the municipality of Dasol in Northern Luzon’s province of Pangasinan now finally enjoys steady supply of the vital resource on 24/7 basis for household and community needs, thanks to a project initiated by citizens’ groups, a corporate foundation and the local government unit together with the village’s officials and residents.
Dubbed “Uli Ram Pump Project,” the technology utilizes Ram Pumps which harness the natural kinetic energy of water flowing from a river in the locality and push up this water through a pipe and into a ferro-cement storage tank constructed in the barangay, with about 780 feet of elevation from the water source. A two-kilometer piping system connects the water to the communities within Uli through 11 water taps where the barangay residents get their daily supply. The ram pumps do not use fuel or electricity but run only on the water pressure from the river flow.

The project, initiated by citizens’ groups La Liga Policy Institute (La Liga), Earth Day Network Philippines, Inc. (EDNPI), and Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation, Inc. (AIDFI) in partnership with Coca Cola Foundation – Philippines and Dasol LGU, was started in February of this year, and is formally turned over today to Uli’s barangay council and residents for their own management, maintenance and sustaining.
On hand during the turn over ceremonies were Dasol Mayor Noel Nacar, EDNPI representatives Roberto Guevarra and Binggirl Clemente, La Liga Managing Director Roland Cabigas and Deputy Director Rachel Morala, and hundreds of residents led by Barangay Uli Chairman Edgar Rivera.
“Each of the two ram pumps used in this project has a generation capacity of about 54,700 liters of water daily to amply supply the needs of some 1,600 residents of the barangay,” Cabigas said.
“The project is part of a nationwide environmental program to install one hundred (100) ram pumps by 2013 in celebration of the Coca Cola bottling company’s 100th founding anniversary in the Philippines. The partnership endeavors to provide upland communities with accessible and reliable community water systems as it likewise aims to raise the awareness of upland communities on the importance of water and help them conserve and preserve this precious resource,” he added.
Meanwhile, the LGU of Dasol has committed local public fund in their current budget to finance reforestation and watershed development around the ram pump area to ensure sustainable supply of water and improve the town’s biodiversity.
The Ram Pump project is among several projects undertaken by La Liga in Dasol and other parts of Western Pangasinan. In the past two years, the development organization has implemented the Organikong Palayan project as well as initiatives for the localization of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). La Liga is also currently implementing here the Empowerment of the Poor Program aimed to enhance the participation of citizens in local planning and budgeting. (La Liga Policy Institute)

What clinic? De Venecia wants hospital upgraded now

Quote:
DAGUPAN CITY—Rep. Gina de Venecia said expanding the Region 1 Medical Center here will make the lying-in clinic of Mayor Benjie Lim unnecessary.

She filed House Bill 3840, an act increasing the bed capacity from 300 to 600 and authorizing the increase of medical staff to include upgrading its services, facilities and professional health care.

The measure is now being discussed in the bicameral committee level of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“The modernization of the R1MC is number three among the top 22 priority projects of the Department of Health,” De Venecia said. “The hospital expansion will be carried out in a period of five years, with sixty beds added yearly.”

She said the cost of operation and maintenance would not burden the local government because it is charged to the Department of Health.

De Venecia said a lying-in clinic will be “a poor duplicate, and can never measure up to the standards of the first-class and bigger R1MC.”

Over-all health care is one of the pillars of Rep. De Venecia’s governance, including Livelihood, Values Formation and Education & Environment.

She holds free medical and dental missions almost daily in 140 barangays of the 4th district.

2 Pangasinenses join roster of Outstanding Philippine Policemen
Quote:
By April Montes
Monday 3rd of September 2012 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis DAGUPAN CITY, Sept 3 (PIA) -- Two Pangasinenses joined the roster of winners in this year’s search for the Country’s Outstanding Policemen in Service (COPS).

They are Police Supt. Belli Tamayo from Calasiao town, who was chosen under the Commissioned Officers Category and PO3 Eduardo Santiago from the town of Bayambang, who was selected in the Non-Commissioned Officers Category.

“We honor the exemplary members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) who have worked together with their communities in implementing crime solution and prevention at the same time highlight their contributions to nation building through various community involvements,” Aniceto Sobrepena, president of the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MDFI) said.

From almost 100 nominees, the awardees underwent a rigorous screening process, which involved documents review and a panel interview by the final board of judges representing different sectors of the society.

The awardees will be feted together with winners of the search for Outstanding Teachers and the search for The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS) dubbed as the Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos on September 5 during Metrobank’s 50th anniversary.

COPS winners will receive a cash prize of P300,000 and a trophy courtesy of MDFI.

PNP will also confer them the “Medalya ng Katangi-tanging Gawa,” a testament to the exemplary service of COPS awardees to the police force and the country.

Now on its 10th year, the search for COPS seeks to identify gallant men and women of the PNP who are able to work with the community to prevent and solve crime at the same time underscore their commitment to professionalism and dedication to their sworn duty.

The search for COPS is a joint undertaking between the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. and the Philippine National Police (PNP) together with the Rotary Club of New Manila East and PSBank. (ANL/AMM-PIA 1 Pangasinan with reports from Metrobank Foundation)

sabagay ok na rin ang sm rosales kaysa wala. i still remember nung bata pa ako, sa dagupan kami nagsa-shopping. after 1991 earthquake and dagupan was badly-damaged, nag-relocate yata ibang business establishments sa urdaneta kaya mabilis ang naging pag-unlad nito - nagkarun ng mga malls, etc kaya no need to go to dagupan........ hanggang sa itinayo ang sm rosales dahil na-block ang sm urdaneta (at kami ay natuwa dahil napalapit ang shopping mall sa amin)

North Luzon Trade Fair opens in Dagupan City
Quote:
By Venus H. Sarmiento
Tuesday 4th of September 2012 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis DAGUPAN CITY, Sept 4 (PIA) -- The seven-day North Luzon Trade Fair organized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PCCI) opened Saturday, September 1, at the CSI Mall Atrium in Dagupan City with at least 63 trade exhibitors from Regions 1, 2,3, and CAR showcasing their products.

The event, hosted by the Metro-Dagupan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MDCCI), is part of the 21st North Luzon Area Business Conference which revolves on the theme, "North Luzon: Investing in Countryside Development."

Vicky Gaetos, PCCI area vice president for North Luzon said the activity aims to attract investors to north Luzon to spruce up business in the region and make the industry palatable to investors.

Dagupan City Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, the event’s guest of honor and speaker, thanked the exhibitors for taking part in the fair and for boosting the economy of the regions.

Fernandez, herself an entrepreneur being the chief executive officer of the CSI Group of Companies which have branches all over Region 1, promised to support the business sector by providing and promoting good governance in the area.

“Good governance of officials in a place will definitely attract investors,” Fernandez said adding that more investments will increase the economic growth of an area.

Lelia Sy, president of the Metro-Dagupan CCI, said the first day of the business conference set on September 6 and 7 will be a chamber management orientation for prospective members and officers of PCCI who will undergo trainings. The second day will be the main event where Vice President Jejomar Binay is the invited guest.
