To be fairly honest, it does not matter so much if things go wrong initially. The main thing is to have all the facilities in place. The design should be good and modern which is the case. Therefore, if things do go wrong, they can be resolved and then the airport could do a good job. But I really cannot imagine this airport being on the top if some radical changes are not made. They should stop their need to check passport stamps just after passing immigration. They should collect customs slips properly rather than just get some bloke to do it who does not actually end up collecting yours (this has happened to me quite a few times). I know you won't like me saying this, but we really shouldn't stop people going inside the airports just because we're constantly afraid of people dropping their kids inside or if we are afraid of terrorism.

City airport to get satellite-based navigation system
Mumbai: Aircraft coming into Mumbai will soon be able to use a satellite-based navigation aid for landing. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to introduce a satellite-based landing procedure across the country in a phased manner. Currently, aircraft land with the help of groundbased navigation systems. The satellite-based navigation system is likely to be introduced at Mumbai aiport in three months. According to airport officials, the new satellite-based landing procedure, Required Navigation Performance (RNP), will give a new lease of life to secondary runway end 32, which is mostly out of use. The 32 end of the runway is located towards Trombay hill, which doesn’t allow the use of instrument landing system (ILS), a ground-based navigation system most aircraft use on the main runway to land. “The ILS, which helps the aircraft land even in low visibility conditions, is available on the main runway and one end (14) end of the secondary runway. It cannot be installed on the 32 end of the secondary runway as its signal , which is straight, would be interrupted due to Trombay hill,” an airport official said. “The satellite-based navigation procedure will help aircraft negotiate the hill and land,” he added. According to officials, RNP will also be a strong backup in case ILS on the main runway develops a snag. “During the 2006 deluge, ILS was submerged in water. In a situation like that, satellite-based RNP can help aircraft land more safely,” an official said. “If ILS develops a snag and cannot assist landing, RNP can be used,” he added. “It will also assist the aircraft while landing in remote areas. We are planning to instal it soon,” said Jayant Dasgupta, general manager, ATC in Mumbai. |

As far as getting the checked in bags getting them through the X-ray machine on the arrival, its the case many places around the world...security cannot be compromised for passenger safety...try coming to USA...they will interrogate you before departure, then again at your transit airport and then again at arrival..

You know what the problem is these days? Some, not all, but some travellers have become whiners. They will complain about everything, or if there's nothing to complain about they will find something to complain about. If you don't like air travel, don't do it. As simple as that. Take the train, or a ship (if you can find one), or even ride a bicycle for all I care. I travelled to/from BOM this summer, I went through all the required checks, as did my mother, and we weren't continously thinking "Oh great, another check, another stamp, blah blah..." Sure, once every now and then you do feel like just getting through it, but it wasn't like we felt we were subjected to some inhumane scrutiny. It's all part of the process, and like many other things in the world, you just have to accept it and move on. Sometimes I think we have a bunch of crybabies these days. I wonder what these same people would do should they be subjected to one airport by the code of CDG. It makes BOM seem like a cakewalk LOL.[/rant]
Anyway, just felt like getting that out. Back to the topic, I for one am happy about the job MIAL is doing, under such difficult circumstances, especially after watching the Build It Bigger episode. You definitely get a sense of appreciation (even more so) after watching that. They're doing some seemingly impossible things in a harsh environment. Now as for RNP-that's great news. Even here in the U.S. it's quite a recent technology, as it's not in use at all major airports yet. Not even all airlines have it, save for some like Southwest which just finished installing it in all its Classic 737s and has it in its new 737NGs. |

UNSAFE FOR USE: AAI
Juhu secondary runway could be shut for 6 months from Tues Closure May Spell Trouble For Oil Firms, Chopper Operators TIMES NEWS NETWORK Mumbai: The Juhu airport’s secondary runway will probability be shut for at least six months from September 18, after a safety audit reportby AirportsAuthority of India (AAI) deemed it unsafe for use; plans are afoot to close it till the concerns raised in the report are resolved. The uncertainty over the runway’s status will spell hardship for helicopter operators and oil companies, like ONGC, as the Juhu airport houses the busiest heliport in India for offshore operations. Moreover, with only one runway open, whether flights can be operated in Juhu or not will depend on which the runway is being used at the Mumbai airport.“Becauseof their close proximity, when Mumbai airport’s secondary runway is in use, Juhu is also forced to use its secondary runway. This is done to prevent the flight paths of aircraft landing in these two airports from crossing each other,” said a senior air traffic controller. So when its secondary runway is shut, the Juhu airport’s fate will be sealed on days Mumbai uses its secondary runway. Citing it a technical issue, Juhu airport director M Yadagiri said he could not comment on the matter but asked TOI to contact K S Narasimhan, joint general manager of air traffic control, AAI. “The AAI audit report cited three reasons for ordering the closure of Juhu’s secondary runway 16/34. First, the runway is in bad shape with potholes,” said Narasimhan. “Since the past two years, we have been pressing the AAI to carry out resurfacing work on the secondary runway, but the authority is yet to allocate funds for it.” Both the second and third reasons allude to an alleged nexus between some AAI officials and builders. The second point referred to a report submitted by then AAI executive director J M S Negi in May 2011, which stated the secondary runway could be shut. Based on it, the AAI headquarters had been issuing no-objection certificates to builders for constructing taller buildings on the approach path of the secondary runway, the audit report said. The third point in the report was that since the NOCs had been issued to builders since June 2011, some buildings could have come up in the aircraft approach path of the secondary runway and so its use must be discontinued till the obstacles, if any, are identified and cleared. “The report gave AAI till September 18 to decide on the points,” said Narasimhan. In response to the audit report, AAI Juhu moved two NOTAMs (notice to airmen) to the Bombay International Notam Office on Wednesday. The first one said Juhu secondary runway 16/34 would not be available for six months and the second said when Mumbai airport used its secondary runway, the Juhu airport would be closed. If the Bombay Notam office accepts these points, they will come into effect from September 18, 5.30am onwards.

They're hoping the public will forget about it in six months time and then they'll make the closure permanent.. Unless MIAL plays its card and shoves GA movement onto Juhu.
