Why is San Jose even being discussed in this thread? Best and Worst Mid-Sized City Downtowns

The best downtown is in La Jolla.

It was good to see Ventura as an honorable mention for best midsized downtown. It truly is a great walking city. However, my hometown Oxnard, Ventura's neighbor to the south, should be one of the worst.

I have to agree that San Jose has not made the signifigant upgrades required to be considered an urban city. What it has done is connect densely populated urban sprawl in name alone. There is no architectual continuity from neighbourhood to neighbourhood or even building to building. Suburbs are cut off from retail and pedestrian activity is limited by car centric arteries. The city was built in LA's image and it shows.

At least they put up a video sign to advertise the wide variety of stores.....Target

Too bad the Whole Foods, REI, and movie theater aren't being built. Hopefully they come back.

Downtown Oxnard is alright. Some old buildings and the new movie theater make it walkable. Just don't wander too far away from the central downtown area unless you carry a pistol.

I don't know if they are completely cancelled yet, but the signs that were up advertising them are now gone, and all construction work on the whole area seems to have stopped.

I was at Target yesterday and I saw the signs. It says Whole Foods, Century Theater and something REI. You know when you take the first right when you're coming from Oxnard blvd. Before you turn left to the covered parking of Target.

Is Century Theater 16 relocating to Oxnard from Ventura? If not, it is too close to each other across the river.

I think it's just moving. The existing Century Theater on Johnson is a bit old. That is if they ever finish the development...

That doesn't make sense why they would want to move there. I grew up in Ventura, CA and I remember when Century 16 was Century 8 before they expended. I still think it is funny that some businesses kept moving across the river instead open a second location. (e.i. Sears, Robinson-May, Stapless, etc.). Both Ventura and Oxnard are big enough to support both businesses.
