I have two questions

1) Why did they change the name from British Honduras to Belize?

2) From this pic, I see lots of nice buildings... are they still there or were some of them destroyed because of hurricanes ?

Belize was always known as Belize by Belizeans. Belize City was always Belize City, and the Belize river was always named that. But legally the country was named "British Honduras", probably because it is geographically so similar to Honduras. It was probably symbolic since it was so far from other British colonies, and so people would know instantly where it was lol. It was a stupid name and I'm soooo glad Belize has had it's rightful name for 40 years.

Did you know until 1973, most people in the English speaking world, referred to Honduras as "Spanish Honduras"?

They are mostly still there. They were mostly rebuilt. Because of Hurricanes, Belize has been destroyed and rebuilt probably 4 or 5 times . We are resilient people

Beautiful collection of historical photos - I love this kind of stuff.

My uncle used to travel from El Progreso, Honduras to Belize City, and he even lived there for a couple of years - This all happened in the 1940's. He used to tell us how nice of a place Belice City was.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards.

Chuckie.
