Glass and concrete maybe - but hardly any steel - too expensive to import compared to poured-in-place.

There are only a couple/few buildings built with steel structure - and I mean less than 10 probably.

There are desserts and rain forests and everything in between in Hawai'i. It only takes twenty miniutes or so to get to Hawai'i from Oahu - I used to "commute" every day for a few months or so a while back - loved to listen to all the bad traffic reports on the H1 and everywhere in Honoluolu as I was cruising down the highway on the Kona coast with no-one coming in either direction! Took me less time to drive to the airport, hop a plane and drive on the Big Island than it took me to drive to work in Honolulu!!! Never saw such BAD traffic jams as there were in Honolulu. There are more cars in Honolulu than can fit on all the miles of roads if they were all to be out at the same time...of course, car theft is a lot easier to crack there!!!

Sorry 'bout all the posts all at once - I never noticed a Honolulu thread before!

I live in Vegas now - but Hawai'i is still in my heart. Had friends who moved to Vegas from Hawai'i and they begged me many times to move here because business was soooo good then - now it's DEAD in Vegas. But at least I have a nice home and plenty of friends and even a lot more from Hawai'i who moved here - they call Vegas the "seventh island" since it has more people from Hawai'i than any other location on earth.

I can't bear to watch almost anything about Hawai'i because it would break my heart beign separated from her...

It's getting a bit better now...

Those are the "Twin Towers" of Pearl City - is what us locals call them anyway. I will swing by and get their official name.

Mostly right.

Each island is and of themselves made up of volcanoes, all the way up the archipelago. Although time has long eroded them (or they blew up), the "hotspot" that created my home is basically burning through the Central Pacific Plate as it drifts over...

Of the major 8 islands...

Kaua'i & Ni'ihau
Made by 1 major volcano, name long forgotten.

O'ahu
Mt. Ka'ala formed the Wai'anae Volcano & mountain range to the west, then several calderas formed the Ko'olau Volcano (with lava overlapping to form the Waiawa & Wahiawa plains). To the south and east of O'ahu is where Ko'olau ends with Punchbowl, Diamond Head, Koko Head, Monoula Crater & Haunama Bay (which was a crater that blew itself up before recorded history and legend).

Moloka'i
Formed by two volcanoes as well, simply called East & West now.

Mau'i
Also formed by two volcanoes, East & West. Only Haleakala holds a name, as given by the Hawaiians. It is listed as a dormant volcano, and the vulcanologist believe it will erupt again - they just don't know when. It still vents steam from time to time... and East Maui does have a fair share of tremors.

Lana'i & Kahoolawe
Most likely eroded volcano-tops - but so old it is hard to trace the hotspot under these two islands. They are believed to have formed around the same time as Mau'i though.

Hawai'i
Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa (largest), Kilauea (most active) and Lo'ihi (newest) are the volcanoes associated with the Big Island. Lo'ihi is the newest one, about 30km from the southeastern shore, and growing off the seamount - it is only about 300m below the ocean surface! At first, they wanted to grant it an island-in-the-making status, but as the undersea eruptions continue, it is merging with the base and side of Kilauea - adding mass to the island itself.



The Pacific HotSpot is what formed the entire island chain of Hawaii. As the Pacific Plate moves, the hotspot weakens the surface, and *pop* a new volcano is formed. We suffer earthquakes that are felt up the island chain - just as recently as 2006 when I witnessed our plate-glass windows warbling in our Wahiawa house! the Ewa Plains of O'ahu (being so flat) feels quakes a lot as well - from Maui & the Big Island.

That's some crazy density for a 300,000 inhabitants city. I've never quite seen anything like that. And it looks awesome! I'm sorry I haven't read all 9 pages, but just to comment on someone saying it looks like some Brazilian cities, I actually agree (link and link), although this linked one is a little broader considering it houses 2,300,000+ people.
