The origins

The development of the Maboneng Precinct, Johannesburg’s ground-breaking urban mixed-use community, began with Arts on Main – the cultural hub known for its mix of galleries, artist studios, creative venues, offices and retail spaces.

The foundations

Maboneng is the brainchild of Propertuity, founded by Jonathan Liebmann. In 2008, Jonathan purchased the old DF Corlett construction offices and warehouses, and collaborated with architect Enrico Daffonchio of Daffonchio and Associates Architects in converting this industrial space into a cutting-edge city destination.

The vision

During the construction of Arts on Main in 2009, Jonathan began to imagine a much broader vision: the transformation of the entire area around Arts on Main into a fully integrated, mixed-use community and a comprehensive and mixed-income residential offering. Maboneng was born. Named for the Sotho word for ‘place of light’, the precinct represents an enlightened community in Joburg’s eastern CBD.

The present

Main Street Life, 12 Decades Hotel, Revolution House, The Main Change and Fox Street Studios came next – all well-designed and unique mixed-use spaces that encourage entrepreneurship, culture, urbanism, creative expression and design.

Arts on Main is a mixed use artistic hub in Johannesburg’s downtown Maboneng Precinct. The creative centre offers Joburgers a wide range of multidisciplinary events, galleries and shops. Forming a large part of Johannesburg’s urban renewal process, Arts on Main is a blend of creative office, gallery and retail spaces. It brings together some of the best of Johannesburg’s art, artists, eateries, urban office space and high profile events.Artists with studios at Arts on Main include William Kentridge, Mikhael Subotzky and Kim Lieberman. Chronicling the rich history of Johannesburg, the 12 Decades Hotel offers unique urban accommodation for visitors to Johannesburg.



The Main Change is an office building that houses entrepreneurs and innovators in a collaborative working environment. Office spaces at the Main Change for rental or purchase are between 120m2 and 253m2. Smaller office space on the third floor is also available for start-ups and freelancers. The building features a spa, meditation zone, holistic healing centre, health food café and fashion and furniture stores on the ground floor. This Johannesburg city office space in Maboneng Precinct, helps blend the worlds of work, play and stay – giving occupants the best of all three. The Main Change was the recipient of the 2012 Halala Joburg award in the “Working and Buying” category



Revolution House offers tenants and owners a variety of sizes and layouts of loft apartments, complete with balconies and rooftop gardens. Located in Commissioner Street in the Maboneng Precinct, MOAD forms an important part of Johannesburg tourism and should be on every local and tourist’s ‘things to do in Johannesburg’ list. Adjacent to this design space is the artisan factory that is both the studio of the Trinity Session as well as a facility for art and artisinal manufacturing. The space will facilitate collaboration between artists and artisans. The space is also an ideal urban events space for large scale events.



Artisan Lofts offers well designed open plan loft living including wrap around city views.
Artisan lofts units will range from 70 SQM – 200 SQM. The ground floor will feature a retail space for artisans looking to have a combined manufacturing/ retail offering.
The development is scheduled to be completed during the course of 2012.

Off The Grid 253 Main Street is soon to be home to Off The Grid, a unique transport concept that focuses on addressing and satisfying the transportation needs of those living in and commuting to and from the inner city.A five-storey parking lot and transport hub in the Maboneng Precinct, Off The Grid will form a critical part of Johannesburg city life. Located across from Arts on Main in Main Street, it will provide over 200 parking bays. The development will also be the home of the Mabo’go transport agency
