Take a bow! Archery hits the beach

Quote:
The London Games may not have proved to be the dream sojourn for Indian archers, but the sport is making inroads into the popular domain. In one such pioneering move, the Archery Association of Tamil Nadu (TAAT) has decided to host the finals of the 33rd recurve, compund and para archery nationals on the famous Marina beach here this year.

Though sea fronts are now turning into favoured venues for World Cup finals, it will be a first-of-its kind in India. "It's time archery is turned into a spectator sport, and what better way than to hit the beach," says Shihan Hussaini, secretary of the TAAT.

Marina, the second longest beach in the world, is very popular among locals as well as tourists. With the finals being slated for New Year's eve, there are security concerns which have left the organisers a touch worried. "The Archery Association of India (AAI) has given its nod, but we are still awaiting clearance from the city's corporation and police. There will be a lot of people on the beach on New Year's eve and controlling crowds may prove to be a daunting task," adds Hussaini.

The earlier rounds of the event will take place at the Madras University sports ground, Chetpet, with only the finals scheduled on the beach. If TAAT gets the required clearances, it plans to construct giant screens and temporary stands for spectators. Close to 600 archers from all over the country will participate in the December 26-January 1 event, which promises to be the largest-ever nationals.

The archers are excited at the prospect of taking aim on the beach. "We often play minus crowds in the country and this initiative is a welcome change. In fact, in the Olympics we had to contend with crowd, pressure and wind which eventually affected our performance. As most international competitions are hosted in similar locations, it's necessary that measures like these are taken so that we get acclimatised to such conditions," Jayanta Talukdar said.

Asked whether the wind will affect performance, Rahul Banerjee said: "We are trained to shoot in windy conditions as well as in rain... It may be a little tough to get one's concentration right in a public place, but that it will be a challenge we need to overcome."

Jeevan crowned champion

Top-seeded Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan proved too good for wild card Arjun Kadhe as he raced to a 7-6(4), 6-1 victory in the men’s final of the Fenesta National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Saturday.

It was not only the maiden national title for the 23-year-old from Chennai, but also his first ever title in the Capital in more than 10 years.

The 18-year-old Arjun did well in the first set, but could not stretch the talented left-hander or deny him victory for long.

Jeevan, who has won titles in the ITF circuit, was quite fluent and did not give his young opponent any opening. Arjun did remarkably well to save two breakpoints in the fourth game, and served well overall to take the first set into the tie-break.

While Jeevan stepped up the intensity of his game, Arjun erred a bit in dropping the first set, after saving one of three set points with an ace.

RACING AWAY

Once he gained a grip over the proceedings, Jeevan just raced away with the second set in about 30 minutes, as Arjun failed to hold serve after the first game. Jeevan was gracious in victory and appreciated Arjun’s good serve, but said that it all boiled down to strong legs and better physical fitness.

“It is an important title for me. I know that a lot of players have won this title and gone on to better levels. I am happy to join them,” said Jeevan, quite relieved that his stomach injury did not play up during the whole week.

Jeevan said that he was happy with the way he handled the tournament and looked back at the second round against Ajai Selvaraj as a tough match, as he dropped the only set in that match.

The women’s final did not live up to the standards expected, though the second-seeded Prerna Bhambri did very well to swing the fortunes around from the brink of defeat when she faced two match-points, before the top-seeded Rishika Sunkara retired midway through the decider.

EQUAL PRIZE MONEY

Ajay Shriram, Chairman and Managing Director, DSCL, listened to chief guest Sania Mirza while watching the matches and announced equal prize money for women with immediate effect.

So, the champion in the men’s and women’s events were given Rs. 1,50,000 each and the runner-up collected Rs. 1,00,000. Earlier, the women’s prize money was Rs.1,00,000 for the winner and Rs. 65,000 for the runner-up.

“Coming to this tournament is quite nostalgic for me. It is getting better every year,” said Sania, as she presented the prizes to the players.

In the junior section, top-seeded Rishab Aggarwal beat second-seeded Karan Salwan, losing just three games, while Pranjala Yadlapalli saved a match point to beat Tarrannum Handa in the girls’ final that spanned nearly three hours.

The results (finals): Men: Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan bt Arjun Kadhe 7-6(4), 6-1. Women: Prerna Bhambri bt Rishika Sunkara 2-6, 7-6(7), 4-1 (retired). Under-18: Boys: Rishab Aggarwal bt Karan Salwan 6-1, 6-2.

The new pigeon-racing capital

Quote:
Move over Kolkata. Chennai is the new pigeon-racing capital of India. With the number of clubs for the sport having doubled in recent years, the city is beak, wings and tail ahead of the competition.

The first to appear on the country’s pigeon-racing map, Kolkata was once the destination for anyone with a passion for this hobby-sport. The Calcutta Pigeon Racing Pigeons Club is the oldest in India and the city produced a slew of legendary breeders and trainers of racing pigeons.

But today, Chennai is unmatched in the number of pigeon fanciers and its ability to promote the sport in other centres.

“Chennai has eleven clubs and around 400 pigeon-racing enthusiasts. But if you factor in other pigeon sports that involve tumblers, tipplers and show pigeons, the city has around 4,000 pigeon fanciers,” says K. Palaniapppan, president of the New Madras Racing Pigeon Association (NMRPA). “To give a picture of how clearly Chennai is ahead of the other cities that boast a history of pigeon racing, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata have two clubs each and Pune has one.” There are around 40 racing pigeon forums around Tamil Nadu and the sport is believed to thrive in Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem, Nagercoil, Coimbatore, Tuticorin, Dindigul, Ramnad, Kilakarai and Pamban partly because of the support and guidance from Chennai.

Another senior member of the pigeon-racing fraternity, R.R. Prasad of Central Madras Homer Club says: “From the days when we looked to guidance from Y.S. Chen and P.S. Lee, pigeon fanciers who made Kolkata synonymous with the sport, we have come a long way. In the 1980s, pigeons bred by these men were in a class by themselves. They were the first to do 1,000-km races. For their expertise and birds, Chen and Lee were much in demand. But in the last three decades, local patrons of the sport have made handsome contributions towards improving the breed qualities of pigeons and creating a situation of self-sufficiency.”

All the key members of the clubs in Chennai are aware of, and also take pride in, the progress made since the 1970s, when two clubs — ‘Madras Homing Pigeon Association’ and ‘North Madras Homing Pigeon Association’ — introduced the sport to the city, but soon sputtered and stopped. In the 1980s, the sport revived as a result of initiatives taken by a handful of pigeon fanciers. They, in fact, went the extra mile to promote it.

Importing breeds

“Pigeon fancier Boldry imported two breeds of racing pigeons from the United States, Strassert and Paulsion, followed by Jimmy Diaz who brought in Sodenberg racing pigeons from the United States. Logan pigeons came from Australia, thanks to efforts taken by Pat Casey, another pigeon fancier from Chennai. A Bangalore-based enthusiast Col. Smith imported Catrysse pigeons, which became popular in Madras,” says Palaniappan.

“Continuing the good work, Noel Kannan brought five pairs of Silver Toye pigeons after a meeting with the man who cultivated the breed, Silver Toye from Belgium. R.R. Prasad and Rajasekharan are among others who have helped improve the quality of pigeons being raced in the city. Ever since a tight ban has been slapped on bird imports, local pigeon fanciers have relied solely on these birds, trying out a variety of combinations, such as breeding Catrysses with Paulsions, Cattrysses with Logans, Calcutta birds with Paulsions and so on.”

The ban on imports has helped unite the various city clubs into a cohesive unit. “We go to one another for good birds. We exchange birds with — and also buy them from — fellow pigeon fanciers in the city,” says Karate R. Easwaran, secretary of Tamilnad Homer Pigeon Racing Association.

The South Indian Racing Pigeon Society — which brings together pigeon racers from around South India for special events — is an outward expression of this unity.

Palaniappan says, “Many factors contribute to this sense of fraternity. One of them is a need to combat the outrageous misconceptions about the sport. Because of its name, people associate it with other forms of racing where betting happens. We have even tried to change the name to ‘long-distance pigeon sports’ to counter this notion. We conduct the races after obtaining no-objection certificates from the Forest Department, veterinarians and the Commissioner of Police, but still face problems while taking the pigeons to other States. For instance, we have encountered opposition often from forest officials in Andhra Pradesh and had explained what the sport is all about. It’s frustrating when you are plagued by the same issues and keep clarifying the matter again and again. For this reason, the clubs organise their races at the same time — this way, we can fight the ignorance together.”

Palaniappan hints at a mega event next year that would bring all the clubs together for a series of big races. “It marks forty years of pigeon racing in Chennai, and it is made sweeter by the fact that the city is right there at the top.”

TIMELINE

1970s

Two clubs – Madras Homing Pigeon Association and North Madras Homing Pigeon Association – kick-start the hobby-sport, but they run into rough weather.

1980s

The sport is revived as a result of contributions by city-based pigeon-fanciers Boldry, Jimmy Diaz and Pat Cassey – among them, they imported Paulsion, Stassert, Sodenberg and Logan, top-notch racing pigeons.

1990s

The decade of consolidation. Building on the good work of the previous decade, a few pigeon-fanciers brought in eggs of excellent racing pigeons from other countries and had them incubated here. The number of clubs went up to five and there were around 150 pigeon-fanciers.

Since 2000

The period of expansion. The clubs work more closely. Pigeon-fanciers exchange birds more freely than before. There are 11 pigeon-racing forums in Chennai — they have had a hand in groups being formed in other cities around Tamil Nadu.

Chennai, Delhi triumph in NBA 3X championships

Chennai (18-23 age group) and Delhi (16-18 age group) came up trumps in the inaugural NBA 3X National Championships, featuring 400 teams pitting three hoopsters each side on Sunday night and presented by Sprite. Both champion teams have qualified to compete in a 2013 FIBA/NBA Asia 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

Two Mumbai leg champion sides, Ghatkopar YMCA Clippers (below 18) and Mumbai Ballers (18-plus) joined winners from Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai to vie for the national crown. Chennai lost to Delhi 4-13 in the U-18 final. Chennai seniors made amends in 18-plus category, sneaking home 9-7 at the Inorbit Mall, Malad.

Chennai players Bopanna and Akhilan won a skills contest and may get a chance to be part of the global pool of players, from which NBA All-Stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James will select to be part of the Sprite Team Sudden and Team Intense during NBA-All Star 2013 at Houston.

Four hundred sides took part in the 3-on-3 basketball event held in two age groups. NBA 3X Basketball was presented by Sprite and supported by Adidas, HP, Spalding and the Basketball Federation of India (BFI).

Sky is the limit

MEET Chennai's G. Akash, country's youngest national chess champion at 16, is setting his sights on new challenges and international events.

Surrounded by the young and the old, India’s youngest national chess champion G. Akash wears a look of incredulity with a faint smile. People jostle to shake his hands and talk with him for a minute or two and the 16-year-old obliges politely. It almost seems as if the Chennai boy is yet to comprehend the level of success he has achieved at such a tender age.

For the record, Akash is now an International Master and will represent India at the World Cup. Looking back at his victorious campaign at the Tata 50th National premier chess championship, the 16-year-old says, “Getting the IM norm was my initial target at the championships and I had earned it by the time I finished the 7th round. After the 11th match (there were 13 matches in all), I was pretty confident of winning the title since the leader M. R. Venkatesh lost a point in that round.”

The 11th round was indeed the turning point of the championships and controversial too as Venkatesh was forced to concede defeat after arriving four minutes late for his match. In the next round, Akash scored a victory over him to place himself within almost touching distance of the trophy.

While this victory has suddenly catapulted him into prominence, Akash is aware that tougher tests lie ahead and is cautiously optimistic about his future. The shy Chennai boy is presently in XI standard and studies at the Jawahar Higher Secondary School. Akash began playing chess as a 10-year-old with his father and soon joined a camp at school which presented him the opportunities to participate in different competitions.

The Chennai boy played his first tournament at the T. Nagar Chess Academy and later went on to be mentored by his present coach, GM R. B. Ramesh. Ramesh has had a considerable influence on Akash and it was on his insistence that the Jawahar HSS student began to do some elliptical exercises in order to improve his concentration. However, when asked whether such preparation gives him an edge over others, Akash replies in the negative with innocent nonchalance.

Accompanied by his mother for most outstation tournaments, Akash and his parents will now face different challenges as the teenager prepares to play international tournaments. Not surprisingly, Akash idolises Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, who is currently the world’s top chess player at the age of 21. The Chennai lad is conscious of the fact that from now every move of his, on and off the table, will be carefully scrutinised and says, “I know I am expected to behave responsibly in public now but I don’t think I’ll have to change much as a person.”

Apart from chess, Akash likes to play badminton and listen to rap music. The teenager also takes considerable interest in tennis since his parents are fans of the sport and rates Andy Murray as his favourite player. The Scot had to undergo a major struggle before claiming his first grand slam title earlier this year, unlike Akash. However, much needs to be done before both of them secure a permanent place for themselves in the big league.
