Porur flyover delay seems to be on two reasons.
Major reason - they are laying UG pipelines for both Water & sewage for the areas and all the major pipelines cross at the junction (Poor design but done long back without keeping the future in mind) . Even EB lines are trunk lines it seems. During excavation, the pile machine cut through the EB cable & water lines it seems. The second reason is that the contract was awarded at a very low price prior to the steep price increase of raw materials, steel, cement etc. The contractor now is asking for escalation. As per tender norms, there is not much scope and they can not retender as the successful bidder may file a case then. Idiyappa Chikkal.

Particularly living in filthy rich state of Tamil Nadu. We just build 700C Parliment building and let it derilict. We spend 1000 crores on a partialy built arial Highway and then use it for posters. Build a flasy library and let for rent to Wedding. Tell me which country can afford to do such things. Our Goverment even give out subsided spectrum, coal mines, granite quarries etc etc. Stupid Sweden, Norway,UK, Australia & Canada goverment are struggling to give peanuts as unemployment benefits to their poor citizens. Here we are doleing out Trillions in India to poor business community. Indian tax payers are not concerned a bit about those Trillion Dollors hand outs. India must be a super rich country. Unfortunatly i dont live in India. I live in a pitchakara country were my fellow citizen cry, moan & question for every Gov expenditure just because they are so called tax payers ( Pitchakara pasanga). |

Work on flyovers resumes after futile wait
Construction was stalled to facilitate shifting of Metrowater lines at Moolakadai and Porur
Tired of waiting for Metrowater to shift water lines, the Highways Department has opted for ‘Plan B’ at Moolakadai and Porur flyovers. Work on the two flyovers was stalled in order to facilitate the water supply agency to lay down pipelines before the two structures came up. But now, the department has decided to go ahead with construction after tweaking a few details. At Moolakadai, the department had to change the flyover design in a small way. Work will progress at Porur, and the water supply agency can lay new lines in future and close down the two existing ones running there. “At Porur, we completed 90 per cent of land acquisition in January, and the rest by July. But we had to foreclose the contract and are now calling a fresh tender. There is enough space on either side of the flyover and if Metrowater wishes to shift the water lines from Chembarambakkam lake, they can do so without disturbing our work,” said a Highways Department official. Work on the Rs. 35 crore facility began in March 2010 and only about 10 per cent of civil construction has been completed. The work had to be put on hold as the water lines had to be shifted. The four-lane flyover — 475 metres long and 17.2 metres wide — will help ease traffic at the junction of Mount Poonamallee Road and Arcot Salai. “We can divert traffic to either side of the flyover. We expect work to commence by end of next month,” the official said. At the Moolakadai junction, the design has been altered slightly so that the water mains do not come in the way. “We will commence work on October 1 after getting permission to enter the premises that have been acquired for the project,” another official said. Nearly 50 per cent of work on the four-lane flyover has been completed. The Rs. 49.55-crore facility is expected to be ready by September 2013, the official said. I have been using the Mount-Poonamallee road for daily commuting.
It is a hell to cross the narrow stretch at butt road section (near the mosque) during peak hours (not to mention the jams all along the stretch, especially at Ramapuram, DLF and Porur).. When widening most of our road, they leave the bottlenecks as it is (one more e.g. vijaya nagar junction). They don't even care about it and it becomes a daily ordeal for daily commuters like us. In many places clearing the encroachments itself will give lot of road space. In places like butt road if land acquisition is a problem, they can put that money to build flyovers to handle it. By this they can solve the traffic problems without worrying about land acquisition, using the money required for it. For. eg. they can build a flyover at butt road with pillars at the side of the road as in the below picture, so that one way traffic is at surface and the other way is on the flyover right above it. ![]() But one thing, if they continue on giving freebies with taxpayers money meant for govt projects, they won't even start or complete already started projects and everything will find the same fate as our electricity board. |

Hi.. I too commute on this road daily and I was thinking of a subway instead of a flyover. I believe there was some thing called a "Magic Box" technology to build subway for a small stretch used in Bangalore.. I remember reading that the construction could be completed in very short period and with very much less cost. The Subway would carry traffic towards kathipara. The traffic towards porur would be on level ground. The pictorial representation of idea is below: ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us |
