ISTANBUL | Tarlabaşı Renovation Project
Tarlabaşı Renovation Project
Project website | Location | Information about the area | Thread in the Turkish section Municipality of Beyoglu is giving life to the history and culture of its’ city. Within this scope, the Muncipality has started ‘’Tarlabaşı Renovaiton Project’’. In the context of the project; 278 buildings that are placed to 20.000m² will be renovated including the streets and infrastructure and 210 of 278 buildings are architectonic. Beyoglu District has an historical tissue with its different quarters as Tarlabaşı, Galata, Gümüşsuyu. The District of Beyoğlu is surrounded with old historical buildings, each unique examples of architecture (271 are registered as unique) dating from the end of the 18th-19th century. In order to revival these old buildings which have today almost lost their beauties, and are almost impossible to live in -278 historical buildings, 9 island of structure on 20.000 m2- will be renovated.. The project that was started on since 2005, has come to the terminal stage. ‘’Tarlabaşı Renovation Project’’ won’t only renovate the buildings, through this project Tarlabaşı will be a safer, cleaner and a livable district. Tarlabaşı’s cultural richness will be preserved and through this project Tarlabaşı will reach its new, contemporary and modern apprereance. With the restoration project, the exterior of the buildings will stay faithful to their original.

I like the designs of the facades in some of these projects but at the same time I think a couple of the buildings look too massive in size. I would probably break them down in smaller structures instead of making them look so overwhelming.
Nice projects nevertheless!

A stupid stupid stupid project that destroys century old buildings and replaces them with cheap copies and ugly new-builds. Turkey still has a lot to learn about preserving its past. I guess the money rules the city now. Shameful.
