When I visited Dresden this august, we stayed in the neustadt. And I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by all the old buildings that were there.

And there was a neighbourhood there where all the youth was sitting on the streets in front of the cafés and drinking, it was just amazing and an incredibly nice atmosphere.

The only odd thing where all the nice renovated old buildings with the graffiti on the bottom.

Yeah, there's some "alternative scene" around, attempting at creativity through "street art"

But still, the Neustadt is great to go out and live in.

Instead, we get this pathetic and cruel joke:

http://www.bausituation-dresden.com/

21 September post, "Florana/Hauptstrasse"

"A final consideration of Florana construction project on the main road. Architects: Thomas Knerer and Eva Lang.
Edit: Please understand that because of the criticism of the construction expected to disable the comments for this post. Thank you!"

Why are architects incapable of creating modern buildings that don't look like a 5 year old designed them? And to add insult to injury they use the most gaudy colors imaginable next to the most drab ones.

All I can say is....These buildings are far nicer than what was there and Heinrichstrasse is now reopened to Hauptstrasse. Not to mention how much nicer they are than the DDR monsters beside it. All is not lost.......

Destruction of the Hauptstrasse: HILFE!!!!!!!

My GOD! Which Barbarians are on the loose in Dresden?

Kampflamm:

I never have had a laughter like that seeing this vomiting after that HORRIBLE BUNKER which so many have to vomit against.

OK Homs, Damascus and Aleppo are worse off but thinking of what beauties COULD have been there IF those Dummköpfe would not reign over Dresden: even der Führer would have felt unwell!!!!

Where is the voice of the German people? Why are the "good guys" not
showing Andreas Hummels beautifull drawings on the concrete walls of that horrible Bunker?

They look like refurbished GDR buildings to me. It's just incredibly infuriating to see what could have been done. Just rebuild what was there before the war. We have the money, the wider public wants it as well but douchebag politicians and architects are in the way.

What can be done about these wrong decision makers?

Kampflamm: what can be done about it, since Hummels drawings shows us a decent and very beautiful Hauptstrasse again!! The horrible Commie-blocks are realy not wanted by most of the world. Certainly not by most people if they have to choose!!!

How is that in Germany possible that this occurs over and over again?
Why are there no massive protests or Architects summoned to leave?

They could have at least taken the time to put mansard roofs on these things. It probably wouldn't have cost that much more.

It's not THAT bad, really. The photos make it look worse than it does. Calm down people.

I'm frustrated we didn't get the reconstructions too. But I've seen the new buildings myself in reality - and all I can say is: I'm glad the predecessor commie-bullshit is gone and the former street layout is recreated, opening up the Hauptstrasse to the baroque Innere Neustadt. A very important contribution to the area.

Still: I want to see the Neustädter Markt (incl. the city hall, of course) reconstructed asap! As soon as there's plans to tear down the buildings at the market, we have to act. Reconstruction plans are around already and have to be promoted heavily.

Why the hell is Dresden not reconstructed totally?

Since the sucess of the Neumarkt: why is this not systematically done for all destroyed districts in Dresden?

Postplatz: it could have been much better with 2 or 3 reconstructions of the famous and impressive pre-war buildings, Carola and Hauptstrasse: the same: 2 or 3 reconstructions would have totally changed the picture.

Sachsen platz: please start with a promotion campaign. Once one of the most beautiful and spectacular squares of Germany. Now: nothing!!!!

The Ringstrasse around the center: 10 reko's alona would have make the difference.

Ferdinand Platz: start building the super gems of once: klassical and beautiful.

If I sum up: only 20 to 25 reconstructions (out of ca 20.000 demolished buildings) can already bring relief and comfort for so many which want more than a tiny reconstructed center of a once huge Barocke and highly urban pre war city.

Sophien Kirche: it really has to be reconstructes: 2 spires are still missing in the Dresden skyline.......

Some architects still think that if the pre-war buildings get reconstructed Hitler will rise from the grave.

In other countries they think we will suddenly destroy our beloved post-war welfare states, stop the progress and go back to the oppresive times of industrial revolution and live in what they call "slums" again.

All in the name of progress!

I can't be wrong since I'm entitled to my own opinion, just as you are.

I'm only comparing to the former condition of this area and it's better now.

This stuff will be torn down in about a decade or two anyway and then we'll finally get the reconstructions

Dresden in 1521 (quite a provincial looking town!):

You can find loads of pictures of Dresden from all times in this Wiki Commons category:

Wiki Category: Dresden by year
