@finalelements

lots of malls are in the pipeline. if not malls, some of them are big commercial complexes. i would say more than 10 are in the pipleline and some of them are more than 4 lac sq,ft, the largest being 8.5 lac sq. ft.

we can term this thread as retail thread and it shall cover not only malls, but big standalone stores, showrooms and other commercial complexes. btw wallmart is coming up in guwahati.

Think you should rename this as Guwahati- Exclusive Pictures Only thread as there is one by a similar name started by Sunny already. One can post only pics here and keep the discussions to the other thread.

Wyndham Hotel Group to enter West Bengal through Bluechip's project in Asansol

JOY ROY CHOUDHURY - Kolkata

Ritwik Das

Kolkata based Bluechip Projects, a real-estate development company will bring Wyndham Hotel Group into the state. Ritwik Das, CEO & MD, Bluechip Projects said, “We have inked a deal with the US based Wyndham Hotel Group to use one of its brands for our upcoming hotel in Asansol.” According to Das, Wyndham zeroed in on the Asansol project after survey of the business prospects of the hospitality sector in the region. Wyndham currently runs 12 hotels in India mostly under the Ramada brand in Mumbai, Delhi, Goa and Bengaluru among others. Seven more projects are under construction.

Bluechip plans to start work on the Asansol hotel within the next two to three months. It has finalised the design and drawing, which have been approved by Wyndham. “We have submitted the plan to the Asansol Municipal Corporation for sanction and is expecting its approval soon. We hope to complete the construction of the project by the end of 2012 even as the target launch date is 2013.” Das said.

The plot for the hotel, located on National Highway 2, has been provided by Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority on a 99-year lease with an option to renew it for another 99 years. Named as, 'Days Hotel', the Asansol project with a one lakh square feet built-up space, will be a 100-keys property. “In the first phase, we plan to start with 60 keys and add the remaining 40-keys at a later stage,” Das said. The proposed property will have conferencing and banqueting facilities besides a business centre, 24-hour coffee shop and F&B outlets. Das said that the cost of setting up the hotel has been pegged at ` 25 lakh per room. According to him, the project will be funded through internal accruals. As per the franchisee arrangement, Wyndham will provide the technical support and will include the property within its marketing network. Bluechip will own and operate it. “'We have hived off a separate arm, Sharda Agarwal Hotels, a fully owned subsidiary of Bluechip Projects, which will own and operate the property,” he explained.

Commenting on the future plans, Das said, “We have plans to set up such business-class 100-key hotels in other important cities of the Eastern region like Bhubaneswar, Agartala and Guwahati. We have already initiated the process in this regard.”

I am with you on this finalelement, we have miles to go to catch up when it comes to the swanky malls you see in other parts of the country. Till then we can keep an hold on a Mall specific thread. But 'YES' to a Power thread coz I believe we have made considerable progress in this field though a lot is yet to be done. We are definitely better positioned now then we were a couple of years ago.

Also I somehow like the optimism of Sunny. You rock man..!! I bet we will catch up with the rest very shortly...

@Deb_S

there are lots of reasons to be optimistic. it is not only the G S road, which is witnessing mushrooming up of malls, but also the NH-37 stretch between jalukbari and khanapara, where minimum of 3 medium sized malls have benn proposed(1.5 lac and above). we can hope for better only in next couple of years, when these malls will be takingh shape.

Golden Tulip Hospitality scouting for land in guwahati

The Golden Tulip Hospitality Group and Louvre Hotels plans to introduce its other budget and economic brands, such as 'Campanile' and 'Premiere Class' in India. Plans are afoot to introduce a Campanile brand in northern India in the next six months. They also plan to add eight to nine new hotels in the country over the next year or so.

“These hotels will be joint ventures with private owners where we will provide management services and in some we could also pick up stakes. We are planning to operate 20 hotels by 2012-end across the luxury to budget segments,” said V J Singh, managing director, Louvre Hotels and Golden Tulip South Asia in Kolkata. He, however, said the company was yet to decide on the size of the stake. By 2015, the company aims to have 50 hotels with an inventory of 15,000 rooms.

Singh was in Kolkata recently for the formal launch of 'Tulip Inn', a 46-keys business hotel and the first venture of the Group in the Eastern region. Shiraz Hotels has developed the property at a cost of Rs 50 crore. “While the restaurant will be run by us, the Tulip Group will manage the property,” said Ishtiaque Ahmad, managing director, Shiraz Hotels.

Besides, the newly-launched hotel in Kolkata, the Group manages properties in Amritsar, Delhi, Jaipur, Panchkula, Bhilai, Lucknow, Mandwa (Rajasthan), Ranchi and Hyderabad. Over the next one year, it plans to manage a second property in Jaipur, apart from Navi Mumbai, Kufri (Himachal Pradesh), Bengaluru, Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh), Mussourie, Ahmedabad and Vadodara. The proposed properties will be a mix of its premiere brands – 'Royal Tulip' and 'Golden Tulip' and also its budget brand 'Tulip Inn'.

The group is also focusing on the Eastern region in a big way and is scouting for land in places like Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Durgapur, Asansol, Darjeeling and Kolkata.

Singh said discussions were on with private developers for setting up hotels in these places. The company is planning to set up a second hotel in Kolkata at New Town, Rajarhat. Most of these hotels are expected to be budget and mid-scale hotels.

Meanwhile, Shiraz Hotels plans to extend their partnership with the Golden Tulip Group. "We are planning to have another tie-up with the Tulip Group in Darjeeling. The land is with us and the structure is ready. The 30-keys property will take another one-and-a half years to be operational,” said Ahmed.

Golden Tulip Hospitality Group forayed into India in 2007 with its Golden Tulip brand of hotels. It entered into a joint venture with the US-based Leyland Group and set up Golden Tulip Southern Asia. However, in 2009, the Golden Tulip chain was acquired by the US-based Starwood Capital Group (SCG).

Meetings in the East

Buoyed by initiatives of the central government to promote the north eastern corridor, many hospitality and tourism players are now looking eastwards. And with national and international hotel chains entering the eastern and north-eastern markets, the MICE sector in these markets holds immense potential. By Kahini Chakraborty

Mini auditorium Science City, Kolkata

The trend while hosting annual business meetings, international conferences and conventions, exhibitions has been the selection of places with exotic locations and tourists spot. This criteria has become of prime importance to ensure 100 per cent participation aiding in mixing business with a little bit of pleasure. With north eastern India being the abode of natural resources and scenic tourist offerings, the region has been showing tremendous potential which has caught the attention of many hospitality and tourism players. Buoyed by initiatives of the central government to promote eastern corridor comprising the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and eight north-eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim it gives another reason to look towards the 'East'. Despite its strengths, the region has not flourished in comparison to other parts of the country and the region's potential has not been tapped effectively. Hence, in order to make up for the disparity, the Government of India through its Department of North-East Region (DONER) as well as the respective state governments and government agencies like the North East Development Council, North-East Development Finance Corporation and others have taken up several significant initiatives to promote economic growth, tourism and development in the north east region.

Analysts feel that issues like shortage of power, over-dependence on hydro-electricity, absence of proper road, rail and air connectivity, shortage of skilled workforce for the tourism and hospitality industry, people's perception about militancy in some pockets of the north east are some of the issues, which need to be addressed in order to help the region achieve the desired growth rate.

Tapping MICE

Looking at Guwahati, there are several star category hotels in the city which meet the requirements for mid-sized meetings and conventions. Prominent among them is The Brahmaputra Ashok, Hotel Dynasty, Hotel Rajmahal, Hotel Starline, Hotel Agneedeep Continental. The Brahmaputra Ashok plans to add a convention centre facility for 1000 guests as part of its expansion plans.

Vikas Sarawgi, honorary treasurer, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI)- Eastern region and director NCS Travel and Tours says, “ Though major cities of the east like Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar and Ranchi have tremendous possibilities in terms of MICE movements, they lack of proper convention facilities and air-connectivity. In case of Guwahati, though it is an important commercial and business hub and the gateway to the north east, the MICE sector is again dominated by regional players and SMEs.”

DS (Assam) Hospitality Limited, a joint venture between Dharampal Satyapal Group and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is setting up a 196-room keys five-star hotel in Guwahati and the hotel will be branded as Radisson Hotels, Guwahati. It will have state-of-the-art convention facilities for 500 odd people. “Darjeeling, the hill station can be explored as a MICE destination in the summer season. Sunderbans too is an ideal destination for official meetings and interactions, but lack of proper road connectivity and hotel accommodation are the major deterrents for the growth of the MICE sector,” adds Bose.

Need for infrastructure

Science City, Kolkata

The road connectivity between Kolkata and nearby tourist locations like Digha, Mandarmoni, Bishnupur needs to be improved in order to attract MICE tourists into the state. Smaller destinations like Durgapur and Siliguri in West Bengal have immense opportunities but lack proper infrastructure like good air-connectivity. Bagdogra airport also lacks the capacity to handle large passenger traffic. On a positive note, Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is connected with major cities of the country like Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and others. Guwahati is well connected with other parts of the country through a well-knit railway network. However, the state governments need to lobby hard to bring at least few top-ranking international carriers to the region.

Future ahead

The future of MICE tourism in the east is encouraging. Once the upgraded Kolkata international airport is fully operational and all the infrastructural activities in and around the city like setting up of new flyovers, metro rail connectivity, etc., is over it will become an international destination.

“If the state government understands the importance of setting up a dedicated convention centre and pursues it, we sincerely feel that the city with its exotic tourist attractions, hospitality, strong cultural background, safety and security would emerge as an ideal MICE destination. Bhubaneswar has an immense growth potential as far as a MICE destination is concerned,” adds Bose.

With the launch of new luxury properties coming up in Guwahati this will cater to the conferencing and banqueting needs of the SME sector. “But to make it large in the MICE segment, the Assam government needs to explore the possibility of setting up a large convention facility may be through private participation which can accommodate 2,000 or more delegates. It can also hard sell its tourism potentials and strengths to lure business houses to host their conventions in the city,” says Sarawgi.

Hotel Polo Towers aims to have 500 rooms in next five years

Hotel Polo Towers, one of the leading and oldest hospitality players of the North-East, has chalked up aggressive expansion plans. The group which owns two properties in Meghalaya now aims to have 500 rooms in the next five years. Speaking exclusively to Express Hospitality, Deval Tibrewalla, CEO and director, Hotel Polo Towers said, “Our plan is to have 500 rooms with a presence in tier-II cities in the East and North-East.” The group operates its signature brand Hotel Polo Towers in Shillong, Meghalaya and recently launched its second property, the 19-keys Resort Polo Orchid in Cherrapunjee. Earlier, the group set up a business hotel in Kolkata, The Chrome, which it has exited.

Tibrewalla said, “The North-Eastern states are coming up in a big way as far as travel and tourism is concerned and there is immense growth potential for the hospitality sector in the region. Many domestic and international hospitality groups are venturing into the region. Meghalaya government has been actively pursuing to promote tourism in the state and has been providing support and cooperation to private partners investing in hospitality projects.”

The Group also plans to venture into non-metro cities, namely Guwahati in Assam and Patna in Bihar. “These will be mid-sized hotels, while the Patna property will be a 150-keys hotel, we will be setting up two 70-rooms hotels in Guwahati,” he added. The Patna property will come up at the central business district (CBD) of the city and will be a 'brownfield' project, whereas the group is in the process of acquiring land for the Guwahati projects. Later, it may join hands with a hotel management company for its new properties. Tibrewalla, however, declined to divulge the quantum of investments on these projects but added that most of it will be funded through internal accruals, debt and from the proceeds of the 'sale-off' its stake in Chrome, Kolkata.

The group has also entered into an arrangement with the Meghalaya government under its 'Skill Development Programme' wherein it will impart hour-based short-term training programmes on hospitality operations to 5,000 unemployed youths over a span of a year. “This is part of our CSR activities and our aim will be to provide some kind of hands-on training to these youths and arise a fervor among them to pursue a career in the hospitality sector,” he added.

The group also plans to set up a fully residential international class hospitality management institute on the lines of the renowned Swiss hotel management institutes with an international affiliation.

Night riders

Just when many thought that nightlife has started to mushroom in the city, the GS Road fiasco crushed the hopes of those who thought having a nighttime diversion after a hard day’s work is a healthy exercise.

However, forgetting about the debacle for a second, if closely observed, the city in recent times has seen an upsurge of commercial alternatives for those who like to have a good time under the night sky.

And trust us when we say this, Guwahati is becoming a hotspot for clubs, pubs and similar establishments that are springing up at every nook and corner of its landscape. So much so that if somebody happens to visit the city after a few years of staying in one of the metros, he/she would not only be surprised, but would be able to draw similarities with them.

Let’s go

Thirty-year-old Siddartha Tanti was looking for a place to grab a beer on a Saturday evening. Though born in Assam, he was visiting Guwahati after a gap of five years and hence was clueless about where to chill out on a Saturday evening. His criteria was simple — a couple of beers amid like-minded people with his favourite genre of music in the background.

After asking a few friends he ended up at Café Hendrix at GS Road, opposite Pantaloons. “Being a music lover, the name was enough for me to head straight to the café. It’s a fantastic place that reminded me of joints like Purple Haze and Sticks in Bengaluru,” he said.

Unlike yesteryears, Guwahati today has an array of options for party peeps in the city to let their hair down and have a good time. Many new pubs have opened up i n the recent times and counting. Though still far from what other cities like Mumbai and Bangalore has to offer, Guwahati is definitely coming up as a city with nightlife.

“Grabbing a beer in a pub and listening to music are simple joys of life and I wonder if anybody will say no to it. I am glad that finally the options in Guwahati are increasing,” says 29-year-old Vickram Gogoi, proprietor of a consultancy firm who shifted his base back to Guwahati after working for a few years in the UK.

Recently, Guwahati added another upmarket pub to its growing list of such establishments by the name of Ozone. The pub boasts of its sprawling interiors and mainstream western music, and the proprietors are hopeful that it would entice party peeps in the city. “The pub has received a fantastic feedback from people. Initially, the response was lukewarm, as our launch unfortunately clashed with the GS Road fiasco that shook the entire nation. But slowly it’s picking up,” says David Koch, who is taking care of music and events in the pub.

Nightlife?

There is no denying that Guwahati today can boast of many watering holes and joints where tipplers and good time-seekers can have a gala time. But, does having pubs and hangout joints alone give a city a vibrant nightlife? Is nightlife always about drinking revelry? Guess not, as many are of the opinion that the word nightlife is not exclusive to tipplers alone. “Besides pubs and other joints, there are a lot of things that contributes towards an interesting nightlife. For example, you can take theatres, concerts, carnivals and such activities. Nightlife is an umbrella word that includes any activity that people enjoy,” states Aneerban Sarma, a Guwahati-born sound recordist currently residing in Pune.

Sounds true — and if we compare the city with metropolitan ones around the world, we would know that the word ‘nightlife’ is not confined only to bars and pubs, but is just a small fraction of the bigger and better picture.

Banamallika Choudhury, a development worker and activist in the city, is of the opinion that nightlife is not about tipplers and watering holes, but is about options for people to have clean fun as well after work. “I think a lovely night market, where people can treat themselves to different kinds of street foods, can leisurely stroll around and enjoy some nice street music, is a good way to boost a healthy nightlife in the city,” she said.

She feels that fear and convoluted ideas about nightlife is a big hurdle for Guwhatians. “People need to rephrase their definitions of nightlife. It’s not about violence, sex or indulging in alcoholism, but about having fun… clean, unadulterated enjoyment,” she added.

However, many feel that comparing Guwahati with other metros like Mumb ai and Delhi in terms of nightlife won’t be appropriate, as these cities didn’t become metros overnight — but gradually developed to become what they are today. So, people residing in the metros have seen changes taking place around them over many years and consequently learned to adapt to it. Whereas Guwahati is still embryonic as far as development is concerned.

Though according to research by the International Institute for Environment and Development, a UK-based policy research non-governmental body, Guwahati is among the 100 fastest growing cities in the world, many feel that one cannot assume that urbanisation automatically changes people’s mindset, that too when it is approximately just a decade old.

“It’s true that Guwahati has come up in terms of nightlife in the recent times. But having a nightlife and to know how to enjoy one are two different things,” said Bangia, who shifted to Guwahati from Delhi for good and works as a general manager of a ground handling company called Rudra Aviates.

He stressed on the lack of nightlife ethics among city dwellers saying that Guwahatians still have a lot to learn from cities like Mumbai. “Guwahati is ready for a nightlife, but we, the citizens of the city, need to be more aware about our basic responsibilities towards the society,” said Choudhury.

Where, what, how

PUBS

Though not many, but they are springing up fast in the city.

OZONE — GS Road. Grand ambience and unadulterated music to sooth one’s senses.

CAFÉ HENDRIX — Downtown. Recommended especially for those who swear by names like Jimi Hendrix, Megadeth and live musical acts.

TRAFFIC — Silpukhuri. For professionals who wants to grab a quick drink to unwind after a hard day’s work.

WHITE PEPPER — ABC. Famous for not just its cocktails, but also for splendid ambience and mouthwatering delicacies.

CLUBS SILVER STREAK — Hotel Bhamaputra Ashok. One of the oldest clubs in the city if you want to shake a leg to some chartbusters.

RACKETS & BILLIARDS (R&B) — Gitamandir. Although entry is strictly by invitation, the club hosts some of the city’s best events.

Marriott Hotels India to organise M-Cube annually

With an aim to leverage India's MICE potential, Marriott Hotels India plans to organise its 'Marriott Meetings Matter' (M-Cube) every year to educate the Indian travel trade about its MICE offerings. The company recently organised M-Cube 2012 at Goa Marriott Resort & Spa wherein teams from Jaipur Marriott Hotel; Goa Marriott Resort & Spa Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel; Hyderabad Marriott Hotel & Convention Centre; Pune Marriott Hotel & Convention Centre; JW Aerocity New Delhi made presentations on the properties and their MICE offerings.

Talking exclusively to Express Hospitality on the sidelines of the M-Cube, Rajeev Menon, area vice president- India, Malaysia, Maldives and Australia, Marriott Hotels India informed that the company aims to have over 100 MICE hotels by 2015. Elaborating on the expansion plans Menon said, “We have 15 hotels currently operational in the Indian market and have another six hotels opening in the next six-seven months. We have also another 40 odd hotels under construction. The company will establish its brands in Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal. Some of these places will see additional brands opening up in the near future. Fairfield Inn will open in the second quarter of next year. In the luxury space, we will open the Ritz-Carlton in Bengaluru next year; The Edition will be launched in Gurgaon in three years. These will increase our brand offerings from five brands to eight brands in the Indian market.”

He gave two reasons as to why Indian hotels suffer. “Firstly the gestation period for any new hotel in India is typically a year or two which is longer than across the world. This issue is mainly due to the challenges with levels of corruption, bureaucracy, red tapeism which slows down the process with delays in hotel projects. The second issue is the cost of land, cost of borrowings as interest rates are 13-14 per cent, depreciating rupee. All these factors make a heavy cocktail for any company who wants to invest in the market to develop any kind of hotel. However, having said that, we as a company have seen a decade long growth story in the Indian market,” said Menon.

The focus of the company is to expand rapidly across the country and with the smaller cities growing at a rapid pace, it represents a potential opportunity for the company's brands to establish its presence in the market. “The eastern region of India is a definite emerging market
. Although this market has been traditionally slow but the growth perspective is huge. As we see potential opportunity we are looking at opening a Renaissance hotel in Raipur; Courtyard by Marriott in Bilaspur; JW Marriott in Kolkata; Renaissance and Marriott hotels in Guwahati; Courtyard by Marriott in Shillong. Our focus is about being a strategic player and position each of our brand as the best product in the market.”

with the opening up of so many luxury hotels in guwahati and some other cities of NE, assam and the entire NE will feature frequently in all major national and international travel and leisure maganines, business magazines and airline magaznes across the world.. and the region will get excellent exposure to premium segment travellers and it will surley usher a new era for tourism sector. i would love this govt. to continue for another 20 years to make assam not only a developed state, but a destination for the rest of indians.
