Corporation plans to ease traffic by revamping bus timetable
KOZHIKODE: The corporation is planning to re-route buses and rearrange their timings as part of its comprehensive bus plan that is aimed at streamlining traffic in the city.
The civic body will convene a meeting in this regard in September. Officials of the traffic police, Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP), National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC), Engineers' Forum and Regional Transportation Office, representatives of the bus organizations and experts from National Institute of Technology - Calicut (NITC) are expected to take part in the meeting. The civic body had earmarked a sum of Rs 42.56 crore in the budget for the project. As per the re-routing plan, the services of buses plying from various parts of the district to the city would be expanded to cover more areas, thus making travelling by bus a comfortable and practical option for the residents. The civic body is also planning to convert the Palayam bus stand into a major bus hub in the city. At present, private buses mainly use the Moffusil bus stand at IG Road. Only the buses plying towards Mokkam, Thamarassery, Mavoor, Vazhakkad and Narikuni use the Palayam bus stand. Through the re-routing of buses, the civic body is hoping to ensure public transportation more accessible to everyone in the corporation. The civic body is also planning to find a solution to the frequent accidents at the Thondayadu bypass. Once the work on the Meenchanda bus terminal is completed, the civic body will ensure that the buses coming in from the southern parts of the district halt at Meenchanda so that passengers can catch buses to the city from there. "The idea is to prepare a detailed bus plan to ease traffic congestion in the city," said M Mohanan, public works standing committee chairman. "The plan to re-route buses and re-arrange their timings will be implemented only after considering the suggestions of the experts in the meeting," he said. K K Vijayan, retired superintendent engineer, PWD, said though he had presented a proposal on the relocation of bus stops and re-routing of buses to the corporation in 2010, nothing has been done so far. He had then suggested regulation of traffic and relocation of bus stops at 12 places in the city. The relocation of bus stops was proposed at Eranhipalam Junction, West Hill-Chungam Junction, Mavoor Road, Rajaji Road, Pavamoni Road, Poonthanam Junction, Palayam Junction, Stadium Junction, Pushpa Junction, Pottamal Junction, Medical College Junction and Mananchira. Proposal for second KSRTC terminal for calicut.
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation proposes new terminal at Calicut University KOZHIKODE: KSRTC plans to set up its second bus terminal at the Calicut University campus, about 25 kilometres away from city, while introducing low-floor AC buses and more ordinary services. The proposed terminal will also operate long-distance buses to other parts of the state. Sources at KSRTC's zonal office in Kozhikode said the proposal is in its preliminary stage and more discussions would be held in the coming days. "Officials talked to transport minister Aryadan Mohammed and now he wants to discuss this proposal with local MLAs, MPs and other local body representatives," sources said. One month ago, district transport authority (DTA) chairman and Kozhikode collector K V Mohankumar had asked KSRTC to conduct a feasibility study for starting low-floor AC bus services. The study report, which was recently submitted to KSRTC's managing director, highlighted the practical difficulties and the major hurdle cited in the report was the parking space. KSRTC aims to tackle two problems with the proposed bus terminal, land acquisition and accommodating more city services at its Mavoor terminal, which will begin operations within six months, as all buses from Palakkad and Thrissur can halt at the proposed terminal. Passengers can use circular city services to reach city and return. The other reason was that officials felt that the parking space at Mavoor Road would be insufficient to accommodate all KSRTC buses that operate from Kozhikode. But MLA A Pradeepkumar believes the proposal is not practical since it will not be the correct solution for the parking problem. "A bus stand, about 25 km away from the city, is not a practical suggestion. The terminal can be constructed in and around the city, as land is available," he said, adding that it would be cumbersome for long-distance passengers to catch city buses from the university terminal to reach Kozhikode. |

It will be good only if regular buses are there from university. Perhaps ramnuttukara is the best option as it will have monorail in future as well as its becoming southern hub of the city.

KSRTC terminal likely to be delayed further
KOZHIKODE: The KSRTC terminal-cum-shopping complex on Mavoor Road in the city is not likely to be completed any time soon. As per the latest review of the work on the project undertaken by the technical experts of the KSRTC, who include senior officials, the contractors will take at least six more months to complete the bus terminal. The work began in April 2009 and it has already exceeded the project time-frame of two years. When the then transport minister, V S Sivakumar, visited the terminus in August 2011, he assured the people that the project would be completed by March 2012. It is now learnt that the delay in releasing funds has affected the smooth progress of the work. KSRTC zonal officer V J Saju said the work could be completed only by March, 2013. "And if there is any technical issue in releasing funds, there are chances of the work getting delayed further," he said. A Pradeep Kumar, MLA, said the project had already been delayed and any further delay couldn't be tolerated. "The government should resume the system of convening monthly meeting of contractors and MLAs to review the progress of works going on in their respective constituencies as that will help avoid delay in the implementation of various development projects," he said. Pradeep Kumar also said he wasn't aware of any issue regarding the release of funds for the KSRTC project. "I will discuss the issue with KSRTC officials in the coming days," he said. The parking bays and the twin eight-floor structures that will house the shopping complex have almost been completed. But the administrative block is yet to be completed. KSRTC employees have already raised the complaint that the terminal does not have enough parking space and that it can handle only about 70 buses in the depot which has to chart over 300 trips a day. The technical experts, who visited the site, also discussed the issue related to the shifting of the oil filling unit in the proposed terminal. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/16945859.cms |

![]() ![]() The area (b/w thondayad and malaparamba) they have chosen is spot on and perfect for such a project but There will be lot of agitations regarding the land they have chosen ,, its completely wet land with lots of flora and fauna....... Filling up that area will definitely be a disaster....and will cause flooding in near by areas.. |

Transport hub proposed
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) on Monday proposed a multi-modal transport hub, offering travel options from rented bicycles to monorail access to a helipad. The RTO has suggested having the hub located between Malaparamba and Thondayad junctions on the city’s outskirts. It said the hub was part of improving the transport mechanism in tune with the proposed monorail. The proposal was tabled during the Road Safety Committee meeting chaired by District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar on Monday. The committee includes the City Police Commissioner. The RTO’s recommendations have been handed over to NIT-C, to file a detailed report. “This location we have proposed has an opening to NHs 17, 212 and 213, should have mono rail connectivity,” Regional Transport Officer, Kozhikode, Rajeev Puthalath, said, adding the location for the hub was almost at an intersection point of the highways to connecting Kozhikode with Kannur, Wayanad, Thrissur and Palakkad.
