Nice one Stephen. Addictive thread - I've spent ages for my dial-up to download all those images of places that I already know, but it's really interesting. Have spotted a couple of things I've not seen before. Love the kettle on the post office building - I think it's great when you can 'find' things in a city you've lived in for 12 years.

I wish they would do decorations like they did in the 80's with loads of xmas trees on Fargate with lattern style lights on the xmas trees and normal trees on the Moor Fitzalan Square etc,and the little Snow men, santa, angels, hollies etc on the lamp posts with tinsel around them. And have proper over head xmas decks, always remember them blowing around in gale force winds as a kid wondering how they stayed up. Todays are just a lttle bit boring and colourless to an extent. But at least this is a start-http://sccplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/press/news/release.asp?akey=3945 |

"David Thornton of Sheffield-based, Tinderbox Events & Installations said: “37 years ago my sister and I were taken on a magical adventure through an enchanted forest where we met Father Christmas in a snow covered workshop somewhere close to the North Pole. It was a memorable, magical adventure that we all shared together. Years later I discovered that we never made it to the North Pole, it was simply a disused piece of land close to The Moor - but by then it didn’t matter. That’s why I’m delighted to be bringing a Christmas Grotto back to Sheffield City Centre this year. Because creating that sense of wonder about the world in which we live, both imaginary and real, is the greatest gift of all.”
I'm old enough to remember Santa's Forest at the bottom of the Moor. It really was a magical place for a kid. Anyone else remember it? |

I remember going to a strange forest where I had to sit on an old man's lap. Nothing to do with the Moor though...

Now that Sheaf and Dyson are gone, and Redvers is changed beyond recognition, I'm quite attached to this municipal -style mid rise, part of Sheffield Uni I think.
![]() The tower at the bottom of West St, looking down onto West Bar, is also one of my faourites. Forget the name of it though. |

St James Tower is in your diagram Kyle but I can't find a pic anywhere. It's a nice, innocuous little tower, now with arguably the best business position in the city and some great views in all directions. I couldn't see something like that being approved today (although you never know).

Actually the "Crap Uni Building" - for want of a better name - must be over 30 metres, and it's in the centre - surely you need to add it to for your diagram Kyle? :-)

There's some pictures here:
http://www.emporis.com/en/il/pc/?id=150707&aid=8 I think it's a great building. Just cause it's so simple. |
