NEW DELHI: DLF, India's largest real estate company, will sell its shareholding in two IT SEZs in Pune and Noida, for a combined value of Rs1,300 crore, as it steps up the disposal of non-core assets to pay down debt of almost $5 billion. Two partners, Ackruti City and The 3C Company, will also exit.

Blackstone is likely to buy the IT SEZ in Pune for Rs900 crore, while a high net worth investor will buy the Noida IT Park for Rs400 crore. DLF declined to comment, saying it does not respond to speculation, but a senior executive confirmed the two deals.

The transactions have not yet closed. DLF's has a 70% stake in each of the two properties. Ackruti City is a co-promoter in the Pune venture, while The 3C Company is a partner in the Noida IT park both with 30% each. Both partners are selling their stakes.

In an email response to a query from ET, a DLF spokesperson said: "We have already outlined our medium-term strategy on unlocking of non-core assets. We have nothing further to add on any specific transaction at this juncture."

Blackstone declined to comment and Ackruti did not respond to the email sent by ET. 3C could not be reached. The two sales are in line with DLF's strategy to divest non-core assets. The company had said last month that it plans to sell developed assets, including IT Parks and its hotels business and raise about Rs7,000 crore over the next two years to reduce its debt. DLF's net debt at the end of March was close to Rs24,000 crore.

The DLF-Ackruti IT SEZ in Pune's Hinjewadi area has a total area of 5 million sq ft of which 1.8 million is currently operational. It has prominent tenants such as Cognizant Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services , Barclays and Novalis.

Another 3.3 million sq ft is under construction at the moment. "The sale will include both leased and under construction portions of the IT SEZ," said the source. The IT Park in Noida has a total of 1.3 million sq ft with Computer Sciences Corporation as the marquee tenant. The building is currently not fully occupied.

DLF had initially planned to raise Rs4,500 crore from sale of its non-core assets. In a recent presentation, it has said that it now plans to raise Rs10,000 crore in the next 2-3 years. It has already raised Rs3,000 crore over the last 18 months.

STEC sets up technology innovation centre in Pune

US-based company will invest around Rs 4.5 crores for this tech centre.

STEC, provider of solid-state drive (SSD) technologies and products in the US has set up a technology innovation center in Pune. It will develop next-generation storage software for enterprise solutions. It will accomodate 80 software professionals for this centre.

STEC had acquired a city-based IT company 'Knowledge Technology' in April 2011 and it had invested around Rs 4.5 crores for this centre.

STEC plans to utilise its storage technology innovation center and software development team to create software products which are complementary to its already extensive enterprise-class solid-state portfolio.

Commenting on this, Mark Moshayedi, president, STEC said, "The opening of our Pune Innovation Center will enable us to efficiently leverage local software development expertise and facilitate innovation in entirely new ways to better service our customers' evolving needs."

Software created by the center is being designed to enable customers to take full advantage of SSD performance, endurance and reliability, which should further drive widespread adoption of SSDs in the enterprise.

"The establishment of the innovation center is important to the company because it brings new solid-state technologies to India and will allow our local software team to make vital contributions towards the development of advanced technologies. It is committed to creating new and exciting job opportunities for the local community and more importantly, offering career paths for engineers who want to be involved in the early stages of the high profile and rapidly-growing solid-state market in India," said Anurag Agarwal, general manager, STEC, Pune.

PUNE: KPIT Cummins Infosystems will launch the PACCAR Technical Center in Pune, India. This centre will eventually have 200 employees focussing on engineering, information technology and component sourcing for worldwide production and aftermarket operations, according to a release posted on PACCAR's website. This centre will be located near KPIT Cummins' main campus at Hinjewadi, Pune.

PACCAR is a US $10.29 billion commercial vehicle maker under the Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF name plates. The company also provides customised financial services, information technology and truck parts related to commercial trucks. Globally, it is regarded as the third largest commercial vehicle maker by unit sales, after Daimler AG and Volvo.

The statement quotes Todd Coulter, PACCAR India executive director, saying, "The PACCAR India Technical Center will deliver quality resources to our global engineering and IT organisations and enable PACAR to accelerate new product development."

KPIT Cummins has reported a 51% growth, quarter on quarter, in its Q2 net profit, to Rs. 36.47 crore in revenues of Rs. 325.01 crore. It has also announced it will invest upto US $0.75 million in a subsidiary in Brazil, following its customer.

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) would invest more than Rs60 crore for improving the existing roads and laying new ones at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi.

"The corporation has prepared a blueprint for the project. MIDC is seized of the problems in the IT park and is working to improve the road connectivity there," the CEO of MIDC, K Shivaji, told DNA on Thursday.

MIDC is a state government agency involved in promotion of industrial development in the state. It is also involved in infrastructural development of every district and helps entrepreneurs set up units in different locations in the state.
According to Shivaji, MIDC officials in Pune had a few rounds of meetings with Hinjewadi Industries Association (HIA) and other stakeholders. Apparently unhappy with the poor infrastructure, HIA had started an initiative a few months back, 'Hinjewadi First', to draw the attention of the state government to the plight of infrastructure at the IT park.

HIA is a forum of about 37 infotech, IT-enabled services and manufacturing firms based in Hinjewadi.

The association had warned that unless the infrastructure is improved the industrial area would be chocked as new units are coming up and the strength of the employees is constantly increasing.

The present strength of IT employees in this industrial area is about 7,00,000. The executive engineer of Pune MIDC, SB Patil, said that work on improving roads would begin shortly.

On Wednesday, the Baramati MP, Supriya Sule, MIDC officials, HIA functionaries and members of Hinjewadi gram panchayat held a meeting. Sule is slated to meet officials of Mahadiscom in the first week of November to improve power supply.

"Things are moving in the right direction. We are grateful to Sule for her proactive role in solving the problems of the industrial area," said HIA president, Mritunjay Singh. Although Singh was not present in Wednesday's meeting, he was briefed by HIA members.

DLF is close to signing a deal with private equity major Blackstone, as the country’s largest real estate developer by market capitalisation is planning to offload its entire stake in the special economic zone (SEZ) in Pune.

DLF is targeting this deal for 2012, and industry sources say the announcement is likely to come within days. (The company declined to comment on the matter.) The deal size is pegged at around Rs 900 crore.



In September, the board of approval (BoA) in the commerce ministry had given its nod to the proposal of DLF Ackruti Info Parks (Pune) Ltd for sale of shares to the foreign investor.

DLF holds 70 per cent in the 11.83-hectare Pune SEZ project, while the remaining stake is with Ackruti City Ltd.

The matter of sale of equity in the SEZ to foreign investors was earlier referred to the law ministry, after the revenue department had objected. BoA approval came after the law ministry said the change in equity structure in the SEZ venture should not be treated as transfer or sale of land.

DLF is eyeing two to three big-ticket sales before the end of this financial year, to be able to keep to its debt reduction target for 2011-12. To reach the set target for the year, the developer needs to realise Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 3,500 crore from non-core asset sales. Recently, DLF executive director Rajeev Talwar had told Business Standard the developer was expecting “a couple of” big-ticket sales before the current financial year closes.

Last week, Talwar, responding to a query by this newspaper on the change in SEZ rules with respect to stake sale to foreign investors, had said the norms were changing for everybody — and not for any specific company. “The real estate companies should be appreciated for asset creation and increasing the turnover in SEZs.” According to him, there was no aberration in the policy as “the economic zone concept is about improving the turnover and exports”.

Besides offloading stake in the Pune SEZ, DLF is also looking at the much-talked Aman Resorts deal, which could fetch the company around Rs 2,000 crore.

The sale of stake in Aman will exclude the Delhi hotel (earlier Lodhi). The company may also look at selling the unbuilt land of DLF Hotels and Hospitality Ltd (DHHL), again as part of its non-core divestment strategy. Earlier this month, DLF had acquired an additional 26 per cent stake in its joint venture company, DHHL, from Aro Participation Ltd and Splendid Property Company Ltd, affiliates of Hilton International, for Rs 120 crore. The JV has only one Hilton hotel, in Delhi so far.

Another divestment that DLF has initiated is in Galaxy Mercantile, a JV between DLF Home Developers Ltd and Infrastructure Development Finance Company. In the case of Aman hotels, DLF has got the final bids from four to five companies. Investment bankers Goldman Sachs and Citibank are in the process of finalising the deal.

DLF’s net debt was Rs 22,519 crore at the end of September. It aims to bring down debt level to Rs 19,000 crore to Rs 19,500 crore by the end of this financial year, and to Rs 10,000 crore by 2013, through sale of non-core assets

PUNE: The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has developed a supercomputer, named 'Biochrome', to address the challenges of analysing genome or the biological data of human beings.

The supercomputing facility, set up at the University of Pune campus of the C-DAC, has a storage capacity of five teraflop, and is compact and runs at high speed. Sponsored by the department of information technology, the entire system cost about Rs 1 crore.

With this facility, the C-DAC will now concentrate on cancer research in the country and has tied up with several cancer research organisations, including the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Health Science, US, and the Tata Memorial Centre. The Bioinformatics Resources and Applications Facility ( BRAF) of the C-DAC has developed 'Biochrome.'

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, Rajat Moona, director general, C-DAC, said, "This is an effort towards providing high-end supercomputing facility to researchers working in areas of life sciences."

Rajendra Joshi, associate director and head of the bioinformatics group at the C-DAC, said, "The pace of sequencing is leading to a data overload and therefore the ability to analyse is much beyond the existing computing capabilities of individual researchers. This tsunami of data has led to a sea-change in the storage and computing requirements. In order to gear up to tackle these challenges, most biologists are adopting the use of cyber infrastructure."

Cyber infrastructure is a combination of data resources, high-speed networks and high performance computing resources that bring people, information and computational resources together to perform science in this information driven world. 'Biochrome' is one such effort towards building an advanced cyber infrastructure for life science research.

Joshi added: "In the US, genome sequencing is at a very advanced stage and one can give a sample of his/her blood and get his genome analysis done, which will identify what diseases he may have at the age of 45. Genome sequencing, which took 13 years sometimes back, now takes just three days to analyse, and it costs around $10,000."

"Soon, there will be a genome unique identification card where a person can show his genome analysis to the doctor and get personalised medicine for himself. The system can be used very effectively in cancer research. Our special focus would be on cancer and we have tied up with several institutes that are working in the field."

A special three-day symposium titled 'Accelerating biology 2012: Computing to decipher' on this topic will begin from Wednesday at a city hotel. The 'Biochrome' supercomputer will be officially inaugurated during the symposium.

The store aims to address the specific needs of the SME customer by making the 'Think' brand accessible to them and offering solutions that address the SME community, the company said in a statement here.

IT firm Geometric has opened a new 300-seater delivery centre at Pune to cater to new projects and businesses.

This facility will add to the already existing centre in Pune, the company said in a statement.
