Yeah that's a massive stretch for a small town. If Queenstown itself was the size of Dunedin or something, then maybe (with the obvious exception of Glenorchy).
Most people consider Queenstown (to Fernhill & Sunshine Bay), Frankton and Kelvin Heights to constitute 'Queenstown.' |

I still consider the others as its lack of flat land that leads to so much sprawl from Queenstown. I don't know why some people don't think Lake Hayes estate as part of greater Queenstown. I know that Stats NZ don't have a measure for the TOWN of Queenstown they just have the local council area i.e. Lakes District with approx 27000 people. Hopefully when they think its big enough to warrant it we will see an urban area pop count for Queenstown.

Okay fair enough with Lake Hayes estate, but Glenorchy? Jacks Point and Arthur's Point I'd also rule out. Arrowtown I'd also be dubious of. Again, maybe if Queenstown itself was a lot bigger.
It's about 13,000 with all the areas you mentioned included (including all the rural areas in the large 'Wakatipu' block though) or 15,000 if you add Arrowtown to that. http://apps.nowwhere.com.au/StatsNZ/Maps/default.aspx Last edited by Richard7666; December 8th, 2010 at 03:58 AM. |

Of all the cites I never thought Queenstown would ignite the most debate
![]() Updating, I've done lots of smaller cities in the great lakes region now, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Rochester, Buffalo etc etc. I'm also about half way through New York, my goodness it's huge D: oh and also the huge blubbering mass that is Chicagoland |

Thanks for the link to the map Richard:
Back in 2006 from the area units its easy to add it up: Queenstown Hill 3153 Queenstown Bay 2271 (includes Arthurs point) Sunshine Bay 2253 Frankton 1785 Kelvin Heights 960 Wakatipu 2646 Lake hayes 242 Arrowtown 2148 TOTAL 15458 Will be interesting to see where they all stand in next years census. My bet is the total will be well over 20,000. |

I've completed Australia and posted them - please note the scale is different (75km instead of 50km, which is the standard I will be using from now on)

Bored so did a wee experiment, took 5 minutes. Google maps travel distances across urban areas.
From the two furthest points of an urban area, but not including satellite towns (crossing rivers etc is counted). Note that I use the two furthest road points of the urban area of the suburb mentioned. I've tried not to count it if it's just one wee long street with houses on it sticking out 500m on it's own. Except in Hastings' case because it was too tiny otherwise. Invercargill: 11km Waikiwi to Clifton, 12 Otatara to anywhere Napier: 11km port to Taradale Wanganui: 14km Castlecliff to Aramoho Dunedin 17km Fairfield to Normanby, 11km Halfway Bush to Waverley New Plymouth: 15.5 Whalers Gate to Bell Block, 11km Whalers Gate to Waiwhakaiho Palmerston North: 12km Kelvin Grove to Awapuni, 13km Kelvin Grove to Fitzherbert Nelson: 21km Richmond to Marybank, 15km Richmond to Nelson Hastings: 6.5km Frimley to Parkvale, 11km Flaxmere to Parkvale, 16km Flaxmere to Havelock North Hamilton: 16km Te Rapa to Silverdale Tauranga: 27km Greerton to Papamoa Beach Whangarei: 15km Kamo to Airport, 10km Kamo to Raumanga Gisborne: 8km Outer Kaiti to anywhere, 9km Wainui to anywhere Rotorua: 14.5km Pukehangi to Hannah's Bay, 16.5km Hannah's Bay to Ngongotaha Note, if we look at urban 'core' mass, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Invercargill, and much of Dunedin and Rotorua (and Hastings, but on a smaller scale) are much more substantial than the rest for most of their urban area. The others consist of just as much 'outer suburb/random long street up a hill' as core; you'd likely not be far from the edge of town no matter what in all the other centres mentioned. Some interesting statistics there. Nelson is always one that's interesting.
Also, classic thread ;D - I should get round to posting my updated maps, they are far more accurate than those in the opening post

I've been experimenting a little with layers and overlays etc - here's a first attempt
Showing Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Napier/Hastings, all overlaid on a background of Sydney. Tell me what you think ![]()

Wow, that is something I have always wanted to see (at least the Auckland Sydney one).
Can I use this for a blog post on transportblog.co.nz? If yes how do you want me to credit you? |

Yep sure you can, credit just as Spotila is fine.
I read your blog quite often ![]() Note - this image really is just a test of the concept. If you'd like something more specific, or on a more regular basis, I'd probably be happy to oblige. Spoti

This is the best thread I could find for this, but still not perfect:
Where and how high are the highest houses within NZs major centres? Chch has scattered houses at the top of Mt Pleasant getting up to 440, and a proper subdivided street - Upper Major Hornbrook Rd at around 320 (I'd guess these are the highest houses with sewerage). And roads overlooking the city? The Summit Road gets to about 430, and Broadleaf Lane goes part unpaved to 498. I'd like to know for both Auckland and Wellington, but aren't familiar-enough with their nether regions to see on Google Earth. Not to be competitive, I just want to know where to drive if I ever go there in a car. Last edited by Rooty; February 10th, 2013 at 03:20 AM. |

For Wellington, the highest houses you would find on Montgomery Ave in Karori - around 300m
and Jaunpur Cres in Broadmeadows - around 300m and Forsyth Grove in Brooklyn (near the windmill) - around 270m

In Auckland the highest would likely be those up the top of Scenic Dr in the Waitakere Ranges (just north of Piha Rd). They are in the up in the 380-400m region.
Highest with sewage would probably be a bit further souther at around the intersection of Tawini Rd and Scenic Dr (has waste water according to councils GIS viewer and is up around the 170m mark). Highest with reticulated water would be again in the same area, likely around Westcoast Rd/Bush Rd which is up to about 200m |
