Brunei, Malaysia To Enhance Ties On Museum, Library Services

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Brunei plans to enhance cooperation and compare notes with Malaysia on ways to upgrade the museum and library services.

Its Culture, Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Paduka Awang Hazair Abdullah said he had proposed a joint museum exhibition and sending officers from Brunei to learn exhibition techniques and procedures from the National Museum.

"I am amazed with the success and ability of the National Museum in bringing the museum to life.

"Many Malaysian visitors, young and old, seemed keen to learn and appreciate the materials and presentations at the museum here.

"This clearly shows that there is something that should be shared and learned," he said after visiting the National Museum here Saturday.

Earlier, Awang Hazair and his wife, Datin Rossnah Johari visited the National Library .

In his speech, National Library director-general Datuk Raslin Abu Bakar said reading materials from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei were widely referred to by users.

Awang Hazair is here to attend the three-day Titian Budaya programme between Malaysia and Brunei.

Name-Change of Bandar Brunei Anniversary

Various events have been arranged in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the name-change of Bandar Brunei or Brunei Town to Bandar Seri Begawan. The Ministry of Home Affairs through the Municipal Department, this morning, conducted an aerobic exercise followed with the presentation of prizes to winners in competitions organised to mark the historic event.

The event was co-ordinated by the Prisons Department.

There was also a presentation of prizes to winners in the Essay Writing and Lens Challenge 2010 Competitions. Presenting the prizes was the Minister of Home Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin. Also present were the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Yang DimuliakanPehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi, Permanent Secretary and Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Prince of Brunei wants graphic sex statues of himself barred from New York courtroom

The kinky, narcissistic spending of a flamboyant prince has been revealed in a New York courtroom.

This week the younger brother of the Sultan of Brunei fought to keep photos of the almost $1million (£617,000) pornographic statues depicting himself in various sexual positions with a fiancee away from jurors in his upcoming civil trial against former advisers.

Prince Prince Jefri Bolkiah, 56, immortalized his bedroom antics with Micha Raines in life-sized bronze sculptures he had commissioned for his Long Island estate Sunninghill.

Jefri is going to court next week in Manhattan against two ex-financial advisers, Thomas Derbyshire and his wife, Zaman, saying they ripped him off when they sold the 23-room estate for just $11 million.

In court filings lawyers for Jefri asked the judge to bar photos of the X-rated statues from the jury.

'Jurors easily could be offended by [their] erotic nature' and 'express their anger as prejudice against Prince Jefri,' his lawyers claim in the filing.

In addition to photos of the statues, the playboy prince wants details about his private life barred from the courtrom, including his many wives, estates, his harem and more.

'As a Moslem, Prince Jefri was entitled to have multiple wives and families, and he did so,' his filing says. 'However, polygamy is offensive to many Americans, and trial testimony about Prince Jefri’s personal life may be prejudicial to him.'

Jefri has 17 children by seven women.

And he has a harem.

His harem was first detailed in 1997 by former Miss USA Shannon Marketic when she sued the prince and the sultan for holding her against her will as a sex slave in Brunei at his 1,788-room place.

Her lawsuit claimed she and other young women were lured to be sex slaves after traveling there under false pretenses. After arriving in Brunei, she said, they had their passports confiscated and were checked for sexually transmitted diseases. The suit was dismissed.

Earlier this year Jillian Lauren, published a memoir 'Some Girls' detailing her 18 months in the harem as one of Jefri's 40 girlfriends, showered with jewelry, designer clothes and bags stuffed with cash.

Jefri, known for his spending habits, was accused of embezzling $14.8billion from the tiny, oil-rich Brunei, a charge he denied. His purchases over the years have included 600 properties, over 2000 cars, over 100 paintings, five boats, nine aircraft including an Airbus, rugs made of gold, and even a mega-yacht he christened 'Tits'.

In 2000 he agreed to turn over his personal holdings to the government in return for avoiding criminal prosecution. But he was accused of hiding assest this Auguest when he allegedly sold hundreds of millions of pounds worth of diamonds in secret.

But it's the statues that have captured attention this week.

On Thursday a Judge Ira Gammerman issued a gag order to everyone involved in the real estate trial. The prince's lawyer, Jeff Stewart, had complained about his opposing lawyer, Mark Cymrot, the New York Daily News reports.

'He passed out photographs [of the erotic statues] in the hallway,' Stewart alleged.

Remarkably, considering their cost, the statues bear little resemblance to Jefri. Sculptor J. Seward Johnson Jr claims he was unaware the private commission came from Prince Jefri.

'The sculptures were a commission specifically featuring positions of the ancient public domain Kama Sutra,' his spokesman told The Daily Beast.

'Artists’ models were used and there was no reference to any collector, buyer, or other individual in the making of the pieces. The project was commissioned anonymously via a holding company and the sculptor was not told the identity of the buyer.'

Jefri was reportedly upset when the statue lacked a mustache and some fixes were ordered, the Daily Beast added.

Brunei and Laos sharing close and friendly relations

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to send a congratulatory message to His Excellency President Choummaly Sayasone, President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, as well as the Government and people of the Lao People's Democratic Republic on the occasion of the National Day of Lao People's Democratic Republic.

In the message to His Excellency President Choummaly Sayasone, His Majesty expressed appreciation for the close, friendly relations shared between the two countries, highlighted by the recent State Visit by His Excellency to Brunei Darussalam last month. These growing ties are not only present in bilateral affairs between the two countries, but also in the regional and international arena.
His Majesty concluded the message by extending his best wishes for His Excellency President Choummaly Sayasone's good health and happiness, as well as for the continued progress and prosperity of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

In a similar message to His Excellency Bouasone Bouphavanh, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, His Majesty expressed his pleasure at meeting His Excellency again at the ASEAN Summit in Hanoi last October. His Majesty looked forward to continuing working together in strengthening the close ties between the two countries, both bilaterally and as partners in ASEAN, for the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries.

Anti-Corruption Curriculum In Brunei Proves Effective

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Darussalam is among the first few countries in the world to incorporate anti-corruption curriculum comprehensively in schools from its primary to tertiary levels.

In incorporating decent moral values (such as being sincere and trustworthy) in the primary level to anti-corruption related acts for secondary students and incorporating the dangers of corruption in MIB subjects at the university level, Brunei will be grooming students to exude exemplary moral values from childhood.

This observation was made by the Deputy Director of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Hj Abdul Raub B Hj Mohd Yassin to the local media while unveiling findings on corruption prevention education (PPR).

The ACB with cooperation from the Schools Department of the Ministry of Education conducted a survey on corruption prevention education (PPR) in March this year.

PPR was incorporated into the education curriculum in 2006 to create awareness on the dangers of corruption among students and the public as a whole as well as to produce a generation of young people with integrity, credibility, and responsibility to build a sincere society.

Currently, PPR has been implemented from Year 1 to Year 5 and Year 7 to year 11. It will be implemented for Year 6 next year.

The survey targeted students and teachers from Year 7 to Year 11 only.

The objective was to acquire statistics on the use and frequency of using PPR books, to get feedback from the teachers on the suitability of the PPR content and to identify weaknesses and shortfalls that need to be improved.

For students, it is to test their understanding on PPR, to gain feedback from the students on PPR and strengthen efforts on PPR.

The survey involves 37 schools/colleges nationwide including 1,806 students and 140 teachers.

The findings from the survey indicated that for teachers, the average usage of PPR books from Year 7 to Year 11 was 78%.

Meanwhile, the appropriateness of the PPR content was 67% (Year 7), 67% (Year 8), 62% (Year 9), 81 (Year 10) and 81% (Year 11).

In terms of the need to improve PPR books, it was 78% (Year 7), 78% (Year 8), 71% (Year 9), 54% (Year I 0) and 56% (Year 11). Meanwhile, for students, on average the level of their understanding based on questions of the survey was 85% (Year 7), 84% (Year 8), 81.5% (Year 9), 75.4% (Year 10) and 84.6% (Year 11).

When asked as to why there were no 100% achievements, Hj Raub said there were schools that did not receive the books wholly or did not have the time to complete the syllabus.

In the ACB's effort to enhance the quality and effectiveness of PPR, the bureau supply PPR materials to school and colleges nationwide this year along with closets to keep the books for the benefit of the students and teachers.

Besides, plans have been made to fine-tune the existing PPR books and to hold public speaking competition on anti corruption for secondary students and to hold road shows at schools. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Present to receive the arrival of both the Commissioners of the Sabah and Sarawak Royal Malaysian Police was the Acting Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force, Pehin Orang Kaya Pendikar Alam DCP Dato Paduka Hj Hasrin bin Dato Paduka Hj Sabtu.

Following the inspection of the Royal Brunei Police Force Guard of Honour at the ceremony, the Commissioners of the Sabah and Sarawak Royal Malaysian Police proceeded to a courtesy call to the Acting Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force.

The Inter-Territorial Meeting between Royal Brunei Police Force, Sabah Royal Malaysian Police and the Sarawak Royal Malaysian Police was also launched yesterday.

The meeting discussed cross-border issues and operational collaborations between the Royal Brunei Police Force, the Sabah and Sarawak Royal Malaysian Police.

To coincide with the meeting, the inter-territorial goodwill sports meet between the three territorial police forces is also organised. The sports meet and the meeting are held once every two years and the privileges of hosting the event is rotated between Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak.

Brunei Government Awards 3 Contracts Worth $130 Million

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Ministry of Development yesterday afternoon awarded three contracts worth around BND$130 million.

The contract signing ceremony for `Kampong Katok B National Housing Scheme', 'Brunei Darussalam Technological Park Project Phase 1A' and `Flood Mitigation Project in Kampong Ban/Mulaut Phase 2 - Contract 1' was witnessed by the guest of honour, Minister of Development Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Suyoi bin Hj Osman.

Signing on behalf of His Majesty's Government for the `Kampong Katok B National Housing Scheme' and 'Brunei Darussalam Technological Park Project Phase 1 A' contracts were Awang Marzuke bin Hj Mohsin, the Acting Director General of Public Works Department and Pengiran Anak HajahNorhasimah binti Pengiran Hj Ibrahim, the Acting Director of Housing Development.

Meanwhile, the contract for the 'Flood Mitigation Project in Kampong Ban/ Mulaut Phase 2 - Contract l' was inked by Awang Marzuke bin Hj Mohsin and Awang Kok Yuh Huh on behalf of His Majesty's Government.

Out of the three contracts, the biggest project is the `Kampong Katok B National Housing Scheme: Infrastructure Works & National Housing - Package 2', which is one of the projects being implemented by the Housing Department under the Public Works Department.

The contractor for this project is Alisan Jaya Sdn Bhd. The Director of Alisan Jaya, Awang Hj Ali bin Hj Japar, and Awang Masri bin Hj Mohd Taha of Arkitek Opfis Consultant signed the contract yesterday.

This massive construction project for 990 units of houses, which is located in Kampong Katok B with an area of 156 acres, is worth around BND$104 million.

Out of the 900 units, 94 are semidetached, 344 are Terrace Type 'D', 284 are Terrace Type `E' and 268 are Terrace Type 'F'.

This project will take 28 months to be completed. Construction is expected to be completed by 2013.

The 'Brunei Darussalam Technological Park Project Phase 1A' entails preparing the first phase of infrastructures for the technological park in Kg Tungku spanning an area of 123 acres.

The scope of work for this project includes development work on the land, setting up of land lots to be developed, building and raising the standard of roads, drainage and sewage works, water and electricity supply, as well as telecommunications.

Meanwhile, L C Y Development Sdn Bhd will be contractor responsible for the "Brunei Darussalam Technological Park Project Phase 1A".

This contract, worth around BND$20 million, was signed by Mr Francis C Y Lau, the Director of L C Y Development Sdn Bhd, and Awang Hj Mirhasan bin PDLRDP Hj Abu Bakar of Sepakat Setia Perunding Consultant Sdn Bhd.

The "Brunei Darussalam Technological Park Project Phase 1A" will take 24 months to completed. Construction is expected to be completed in 2013.

As the 'Flood Mitigation Project in Kampong Ban/Mulaut Phase 2 - Contract 1', worth around BND$6 million, the contractor is Chung Hsing Construction Sdn Bhd.

The contract was signed by Dayang Kartina binti Zakaria, the Director of Chung Hsing Construction, and Mr Gregory James Cumming of TCB Ibrahim Consultant Sdn Bhd.

This project, which is being handled by the Drainage & Sewerage Department of the Public Works Department, involves building drainages at Ban 1A-3A, 4, 5 and 6 that would increase the capacity and efficiency for water flow to the Sengkurong river channel.

To monitor the rainfall and depth of the river water, works on supplying and installing a hydrological station will also be implemented under this project.

Brunei, Malaysia To Boost Ties

Brunei-Muara - Brunei and Malaysia are expected to increase bilateral cooperation in the area of trade and education following a meeting between His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister yesterday.

In a briefing with Malaysian media after a visit to the Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin disclosed to media that Brunei had identified three territories with great potential for investment, namely Iskandar Malaysia in Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.

Malaysia's deputy premier said the investment would be taken up by the Brunei Investment Agency (BIA), according to a report by Bernama, Malaysia's state news agency.

Bernama quoted Tan Sri Muhyiddin, who also holds the post of education minister in Malaysia, as saying that both countries would also establish cooperation in education, particularly in the aspect of international schools, vocational education and ICT.

He said that in the area of international schools, one aspect to be looked into would be the need for exchange of students because a feature of the development of high-performance schools in Malaysia was an international network among schools abroad.

Meanwhile, The Star Online reported that BIA was keen on going into real estate development in Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.

It reported that the deputy premier had revealed that BIA was also eyeing potential projects in halal meat production and hotel projects.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin, who is on a two-day official visit to the Sultanate, earlier in the morning held a bilateral meeting with Brunei's Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong. The two discussed bilateral relationship and further cooperation in the field of education.

A statement from Brunei's education ministry yesterday described these to be in the areas of technical and vocational education, teachers' training, school linkages programmes such as in the areas of information and communication technology, the use of English as a medium of instruction in schools and possible areas of future collaboration in school improvement programmes.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin was granted an audience with His Majesty at the Istana Nurul Iman, during which His Majesty was reported to have expressed his interest in expanding bilateral relations with Malaysia in the area of trade and education.

After the audience, Tan Sri Muhyiddin proceeded to visit the Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School and toured the school.

He attended an evening reception to mingle with Malaysians in Brunei at the Malaysian High Commission.

Brunei ups tourism ante with new waterfront

The Crown Prince of Brunei has officially opened a new marina designed to enhance the Sultanate's tourism offerings.

The Bandar Seri Begawan Waterfront Promenade is a new public space intended to boost nightlife in Brunei's capital, a fairly small city which has historically suffered from a lack of evening entertainment.

The B$5.6 million (€3.1 million) project, which Brunei's tourism authorities describe as an "eagerly-anticipated new addition to the capital’s urban landscape," includes several trendy restaurants, art exhibits, souvenir shops and a tourist information kiosk.

Seven young Bruneians signed agreements on 12 October to join Royal Brunei Airlines’ 41st intake of Cadet Pilot Training Scheme. A signing ceremony to commemorate the start of their aviation careers was held at the Muhibah Room, Royal Brunei Recreation Club with senior representatives of Royal Brunei and their chosen training provider, CTC Aviation.

Brunei recruiting young graduates for its booming

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Brunei Darussalam, Southeast Asia's only ruling monarchy, is now recruiting new graduates, especially those with degrees on engineering and related fields, as it diversifies its oil-based economy.

Over the weekend, a jobs fair was held at a business complex here in the sultanate's capital to recruit young graduates.

During the jobs fair, Energy Minister Mohammad Yasmin Umar introduced the executives of nine energy companies, including Halliburton and Shell. The executives then explained the vacancies in the spin-off industries from the main oil and gas industry.

Gazprom eyeing oil fields in Asia

Gazprom is in talks with Brunei LNG about possible gas purchases as delays in Russian LNG projects have forced the Russian oil major to seek additional resources in Asia, Vedomosti daily reports.

Gazprom, the holder of the world's largest gas reserves, has been struggling to kick-start LNG projects in Russia amid global financial turmoil and recent discoveries of vast unconventional gas resources in the United States. The gas from Brunei LNG could be purchased after 2013 when current contracts expire, reports Vedomosti, citing documents prepared for Gazprom's board.


A Memorandum of Cooperation between Gazprom and the Government of Brunei was signed in June, reported The Brunei Times. But the details were not disclosed. A Gazprom spokeswoman would not comment.

The master plan will guide the government toward achieving long-term goals set out for Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city of Brunei:

• Maintain the status of Bandar Seri Begawan as one of Asia’s top 10 most livable cities.

• Ensure orderly development to make Bandar Seri Begawan a safe, friendly and livable place.

• Provide immediate, medium and long-term development policies and strategies for Bandar Seri Begawan until 2035 and beyond.

The master plan sets a vision for a phased transformation of Brunei’s capital city over the next 25 years. The plan outlines future land use options, including policy and institutional recommendations to guide the implementation process.
